Steve Aoki >> Takes the Cake in Scottsdale [Maya Day+Nightclub]

Steve Aoki >> just can't get enough of Scottsdale and old town just can't get enough of his cake in the face. Just a few short months after a Turbulance-driven set at AXIS RADIUS, SLE brought Mr. Aoki back to spin a Sunday funday pool party at the all new Maya Day and Nightclub.

Steve Aoki >> Maya Day and Nightclub

Aoki has certainly established himself as a premier artist and entertainer of the past decade so it's no surprise that Sunday's set was insane and full of energy. It's also no surprise that in addition to bringing a nasty set he brought his repertoire of props and shenanigans that have become a standard whenever he is on the bill.

Each year, Steve Aoki performs 200-300 shows and most, if not all, of those shows he brings some cake to crunch on the crowd, a few bottles of champagne to shower them with and an inflatable raft to ride around in on a sea of people dancing about in front of the booth. Standard Aoki party really.

Steve Aoki >> Maya Day and Nightclub

However, each venue is different and be it a festival stage or pool party, the booth that he rocks is constructed differently everywhere and lies in a unique position. Yesterday, I was standing behind Aoki for most of the first hour of his set and witnessed him profiling the environment, testing the strength of his surroundings and planning how his monkeying around would go down.

Steve Aoki >> Maya Day and Nightclub

In addition to being a world class DJ, producer and performer Steve Aoki is also an incredible acrobat and quite a climber. I doubt the booth at Maya was built for this type of tomfoolery but Aoki made it his personal jungle gym and commanded every crevasse like a Cirque Du Soleil all-star.

Steve Aoki >> Maya Day and Nightclub

Aoki set-tripped a great Sunday funday and clearly SLE and Maya have introduced some next level shit to the valley. This event was just the tip of the desert iceberg in grandiose pool parties that will ensue this summer. Over the next few weeks, Maya Day and Nightclub will see Kaskade, Nervo and Otto Knows just to name a few. Cheers to the valley taking it up a few notches in 2013 and jeers to the Memorial-sized hangover this weekend has probably bestowed upon you.

New Music >> True Blood Soundtrack [Volume 4]

True Blood Volume 4 >> So a new season of True Blood is looming and just in time for this carnival is its soundtrack that features many a beast of the stage. Music from the original series on HBO will be out this Tuesday [5.28] to give some lifeblood to your Memorial Weekend hangover.

Soundtrack >> True Blood Vol. 4

This compilation is made of tracks from artists I've really grown to love over the years in The Naked & Famous, Alabama Shakes, Warpaint and My Morning Jacket, who contribute a cover of 'Turn Turn Turn'. I think this version is actually better than the original but doesn't really hold a candle to that of The Byrds'.

Speaking of covers outshining the original, Eric Burdon of The Animals and Jenny Lewis nailed it with a new rendition of 'Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood' on the trailblazing 1st track of this album.

Oh you don't like it when people mess with the original version? Relax. Howlin' Wolf's very own 'Smokestack Lightnin' is on this too and in pure rugged blues form along with Koko Taylor's OG 'Whatever I Am, You Made Me'. So there you go, grandpa. I supposed you want me to stop thumping my goddam bass too?

Iggy Pop also teams up with Bethany Costino on the power track 'Let's Boot And Rally'. So brilliant. I love Bethany in Best Coast and this was a great collaboration with the legendary king of punk of the Americas. I think this one and 'The Sun' by The Naked And Famous are the best songs on this album.

All the aforementioned are great plus there are some good ones from The Heavy, Bosco Delray and Deep Vally. All of which compelled me to dig deeper into their stuff and possibly becoming a fan. I'd say the only blemish to an otherwise pristine soundtrack is the last track by Los Lobos. I just think they are generally too cheesy.

True Blood Volume 4 is super succulent and curated richly with old and new music with charms to soothe the savage beast. It will be available this Tuesday so you best take a bite.

Track Listing: Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood - Eric Burdon with Jenny Lewis * Let's Boot and Rally - Iggy Pop with Bethany Cosentino * What Makes A Good Man? - The Heavy * Smokestack Lightnin' - Howlin' Wolf * Pocket Change - Alabama Shakes * Authority Song - Bosco Delrey * Turn Turn Turn - My Morning Jacket * Your Face Can Tell The Future - The Flaming Lips * The Sun - The Naked And Famous * Undertow - Warpaint * I Wanna Be Your Man - Mobley * (She's A) Wanderer - Deap Vally * Whatever I Am, You Made Me - Koko Taylor * We'll Meet Again - Los Lobos

Dragonette >> Just came to say Hello to Tempe [Marquee Theatre]

Dragonette >> made their way to Tempe on Tuesday for a fun fun show at Marquee Theatre that also featured The Presets. Led by the adorable Martina Sorbara in stylish 2-tone black/white jeans and some weird grandma loafers that she somehow rocked in sexy fashion, the Torontarion trio delivered a performance that was magical to the max.

Martina >> Dragonette

Martina and the Canucky bunch arrived on stage and opened with perhaps my favorite of their songs 'Pick Up The Phone' followed by a set predominantly comprised of Bodyparts.  From 'Live In This City' to 'Let It Go' each song performed from their most recent album set a scarce crowd into a mayhem ball. Oddly, there were probably only about 100 peeps in the joint but it was great to have some real estate to jive like a madman throughout the show.

High-Quality iPod/iPhone Accessories

I wasn't aware that the leading lady Martina also played guitar in addition to those cherubic vocals so I was wowed when she busted it out to play some mean chords on a few songs later in the show. Thereafter, Dragonette gave us a 'Hello' which has certainly taken the band's popularity to another level just a few years ago.

To close out the set the rumbling bass and electric frequencies of 'I Get Around' blared about the venue and just before the vocals kicked in, Dan Kurtz on the synths sarcastically said, 'Yay! Finally a dancing song!' as if we weren't already dancing our faces off the entire night already.

Dragonette >> Marquee Theatre

Dragonette was energetic to the max and as expected a fucking joy to experience live. They prepped the crowd nicely for a great night of synth-pop for days with a power 1-2 punch including The Presets and I'm absolutely looking forward to the next time they get around to the desert again.

New Music >> Man Or Astro-Man?: Defcon 5…4…3…2…1

Man Or Astro-Man? Defcon 5...4...3...2...1 >> is out today after a nearly 12-year hiatus and now MOAM? is back with an astro-load of intergalactic energy and a new album out of this fucking world.

Man Or Astro-Man? >> Defcon 5...4...3...2...1

A few weeks ago I got to check out Man Or Astro-Man? in Phoenix when they opened for Ra Ra Riot at Crescent Ballroom. That show was great mainly because they warmed it up nicely and very loudly with space jams, galactic countdown interludes and pyrotechnic instruments. I arrived at the show not knowing a thing about MOAM? and left in such curious awe that I had to dig into them and see what's up.

I have been astro-blasting this latest launch Defcon 5...4...3...2...1 pretty much nonstop for the last 4 days, that is, in between plays of Random Access Memories by Daft Punk which is also out today. Just like their show, it's spectacularly loud and features a surf rock sound that has been seemingly reinvented into a modern psychobilly punk motif. It's like Dick Dale got in a space suit and joined Agent Orange then got The Living End to navigate the shuttle around the galaxy. It also sounds like the album features more instruments than what I saw the foursome playing on stage earlier this month. There's also a lot more cool Defcon-ic sound effects in the layered in there too.

The olloclip is a quick-connect lens solution for the iPhone – now available for the iPhone 5.

The vocals are scarce throughout the album, which isn't a bad thing because the abundant jam sequences are captivating. I wish there were more vocals though. The lead singer has a familiarly interesting voice that I hoped would be featured more. I also would like singing along in my car a little more instead of air-strumming and drumming my steering wheel like a madman around the desert. Oh well, that's their thing and it's certainly working.

I totally recommend picking this album up. The vibe aligns with whatever you have going on this summer from the beach to outer space and just in time for Memorial Weekend, what better way to get familiar with what should be a staple soundtrack of the solstice. The countdown begins now.

Track Listing: Defcon 5 * Antimatter Man * All Systems to Go * Disintegrate * Defcon 4 * Codebreaker Seventy Eight * Communication Breakdown Pt. II * Defcon 3 * Electric Arc * Defcon 2 * New Cocoon * Defcon 1

Happy Birthday Busta Rhymes >> The World Renowned is 40

Busta Rhymes >> up in the place. True indeed. Yes, it's his 40th birthday today and that's word on my seed. That's a 'Woo Hah! Got You All In Check' reference for all y'all who remember his debut release The Coming. That album was one of my first CD's labeled as PARENTAL ADVISORY: EXPLICIT LYRICS so I had to hide that shit from my moms yo. Anyway, as a shout out to my boy on his birthday I'd like to share an essay I wrote on him for school back in 2002. Yeah, so I chose to write about Busta Rhymes instead of John F. Kennedy. Teacher said I could choose whoever I wanted so fuck off or just watch me get down and just 'Do My Thing' baby.

Busta Rhymes >> Woo Hah!!

BUSTA-BUST: The World Renowned

The Man:

With his unpredictable rap style and undeniably outlandish yet urbane image, Busta Rhymes is a true original.  Busta is recognized by millions by his trend-setting fashions and his eccentric hairdo.  Not to mention his high energy level and humorous personality.

In this day in age, Busta Rhymes persists to be one of Hip-Hop’s most legendary artists.  Known by his unique rap style and an urban-Jamaican persona, the hip-hop genius broke ground in 1996 with his solo album The Coming and has not made any signs of stopping yet.  Busta Rhymes emphasizes on his ability to “keep it real” and to remain “raw”.

Evolution:

On May 20, 1972, Trevor Smith Jr. was born in Brooklyn, New York. The bright and innovative young man moved to Long Island in 1983.  A couple years later, Trevor started school at Uniondale High School.  There he met other inventive lyricists: Charlie Brown, Dinco D. and Cut Monitor Milo.  The foursome was eager to make names for themselves and eventually joined together to make Leaders of the New School.  Trevor Smith then grew to be Busta Rhymes.

Busta Rhymes, characterized by his distinctive Raga/Hip-Hop style, let loose at the age of seventeen and began establishing himself in the underground world of hip-hop.  Around that time, Long Island had already spawned some big names in hip-hop such as Eric B. & Rakim and Public Enemy.  These Long Islanders were big influences on Leaders of the New School’s first album A Future Without a Past in 1991.  The group encountered some success and released one more album in 1993.  Shortly after the release of T.I.M.E.: The Inner Mind’s Eye, the group separated.

The deterioration of Leaders of the New School was caused by disagreements among the members and frustration from lack of their projected success.  Busta discussed his controversy with VH1 during an interview for Behind the Music.

“Fuck Leaders of the New School at this point.  I ain’t making no money over there.  These niggas obviously aren’t trying to help us secure each other’s well-beings because we’re getting into so much dumb shit with each other that we ain’t even going to handle business no more…and I’m looking at that as a ‘Fuck me’ from them. More so from [Charlie] Brown…because everyone was showing up when we had shit to do, just he wasn’t.”

Without letting those hard feelings create a barricade to his success, Busta Rhymes spent time laying down tracks with various artists such as Craig Mack and A Tribe Called Quest.  Busta appears on a very well known classic by Tribe called “Scenario”.  He also made cameos in movies like “Higher Learning” and “Who’s the Man?”

Evidently, Busta Rhymes was on the right path to making some noise.  Shortly thereafter, Busta released his renowned single “Woo-Hah!! Got You all in Check”.  Almost instantly, the hip-hop genius transformed from underground to groundbreaking.  It was the realization that Busta Rhymes possessed a style like no other that made other artists wanting Busta Rhymes on their tracks.

The Rise to Stardom:

Thanks to the debut songs “Woo-Hah” and “It’s a Party” featuring Zhane, Busta Rhymes’ album The Coming did extremely well.  The mainstream hip-hop community was waiting for an artist like Busta.  This lyrical genius fabricated brilliant rhymes, superb beats, and an ever so amusing sense of humor while remaining an intimidating rapper.  Not to mention, the videos released at this point were quite entertaining and screamed outrageousness.

Busta Rhymes was quickly gaining popularity and on the verge of stardom.  Other artists recognized his individuality and before Busta knew it, he had laid down tracks for T.L.C., Boyz II Men, Mary J. Blige, and more songs with A Tribe Called Quest.

In September of 1997, Busta Rhymes released his sophomore album When Disaster Strikes.  The album contained very popular singles such as, “Serious” and “One” featuring Erykah Badu.  The album continued to climb the charts and became the first of four consecutive, platinum albums for Busta.  That same year, Busta Rhymes came out with a remixed version to his song “Turn It Up/Fire It Up” which was backed by a juked theme song from the television series Knight-Rider.

Busta Rhymes continued magnifying his amusing video personality.  He won an MTV music video award for “Serious” that year.  Busta’s high energy level and hunger for astonishing the audience lead to more creative inventions.

Busta Rhymes and rappers Rampage, Lord Have Mercy, Spliff Star, Rah Digga, and Baby Sham collaborated and put together the Flipmode Squad.  Shortly after the MTV’s award was given to him, the Flipmode Squad released their debut album The Imperial.  It was only a matter of time until Busta Rhymes made his biggest splash yet.

The Explosion:

In the beginning of 1999, Busta’s highly anticipated third album hit stores and debuted in the top ten of the Billboard charts.  Extinction Level Event: The Final World Front marked yet another one of Busta’s highly successful albums.  This album’s content demonstrated Busta Rhymes’ versatility and wide range of style.  The album contained the international hit “What’s It Gonna Be?” featuring Janet Jackson.  The song reached the United Kingdom’s top ten and remained there for over a month.  Busta also collaborated with Ozzy Osbourne of Black Sabbath for a remake of Ozzy’s song “Iron Man”.

Also a bizarre yet amazing song could be found on this album that displayed Busta’s innovative video talent.  “Gimme Some More” became a hit in the U.S. and Busta was awarded Spin Magazine’s Most Creative Video Award for it.

In 2000, Busta composed another album called Anarchy.  Though not nearly as successful as Extinction Level Event, the album went platinum and lead to numerous movie roles for Busta that year such as “Shaft”.  Also, Anarchy was the final album Busta Rhymes released as part of Elektra records.

The Aftermath:

After releasing Anarchy, Busta Rhymes, Q-Tip from A Tribe Called Quest, and others teamed up to make an album called Violator.  The album is a compilation of a plethora of superb talent featuring each other on a variety of songs.

In November of 2001, Busta Rhymes’ most recent album was released.  Genesis hit the stores and immediately made a huge impact.  Though only released for a short period, the album is already platinum.

Busta Rhymes is currently touring the United States and promoting this excellent album.  Busta Rhymes’ zany antics never fail to woo the crowd.  He has appeared on several successful tours such as the Smokin’ Grooves Tour with the Fugees and the Smoke-Out Festival Tour with Cypress Hill.

Busta Rhymes, a smart and confident artist, strives to be the most revolutionary artists.  In the introduction of the song “Gimme Some More”, Busta narrates: “If I can’t be part of the greatest, then I have to be the greatest myself.”  These words depict his strategy of outdoing everyone, including himself.  He has done a spectacular job thus far and doesn’t seem to be slowing down.

One of the most respectable qualities Busta Rhymes possesses is the ability to remain original yet unique.  On Busta’s first album, the first track contains him repeatedly yelling, “I make sure everything remains raw.  I make sure everything remains raw.”  Busta has the power to make audiences and the hip-hop community stand agape while remaining true to himself.  He does not allow trends to overcome his style.  He is the one who sets the trends.  He constantly demands that MC’s should “keep it real” and to “come original”.  If these characteristics make an MC “raw”, then Busta Rhymes is bloody and the rest of the population is well done.

Ra Ra Riot >> Nothing but Beta Love for Phoenix [Crescent Ballroom]

Ra Ra Riot >> shared the love in Phoenix on Thursday, headlining a great show downtown at Crescent Ballroom. With a lineup that also featured Man Or Astro-Man?, Speak and Audacity this turned out to be a superb mini-festival on a gorgeous spring night in the desert.

Man Or Astro-Man? >> Crescent Ballroom

Although it was a fairly short set, Man Or Astro-Man? nearly stole the show with their relentless energy and animated movement about the entire stage between several galactic screens and a crowd that seemingly came to see Ra Ra Riot but got a kickass bonus thanks to the space cadets.

High-Quality iPod/iPhone Accessories

There weren't many vocals in their performance but the power jams channeling the surf style strings of Dick Dale were plenty to capture the packed house. At one point they performed a song that featured a full-sized standing theremin that I've never seen played in such a rock out way before. Furthermore, the guy who operated it set it on fucking fire at the end of the song and said, 'If you can't play it, burn it.'

I loved the space-themed recordings that played between songs and astronautic garb donned by the band and perhaps better than Manufactured Superstars rock the similar getup.

Ra Ra Riot >> Crescent Ballroom

Ra Ra Riot took the stage about 15 minutes after Astro-Man carried off their equipment and opened with 'Too Too Too Fast' followed by 'Shadowcasting', both amongst the raddest of tracks off their first full length albums, The Rhumb Line and The Orchard, respectively. Then came the shower of songs from Beta Love, their latest LP released just this January [really great BTW]. Such songs like 'Binary Mind', 'Dance With Me' and the title track seemed to get the crowd going more so than others which demonstrates how great the band has become since I last saw them in Tempe at the Clubhouse in 2010.

Girls of Ra Ra Riot >> Crescent Ballroom

Personally I loved The Orchard and they did perform a great 'Too Dramatic' and closed with 'Boy' before an encore that wrapped up with 'I Shut Off'. I'm glad the band is enjoying so much success these days and their sound has become very mature but I must say I'm a little bummed not to have seen the hotso Alexandra up there on the cello. Upon further research I learned she is no longer in the band, unfortunately. Not sure what happened but they moved forward with a girl who could also crush it on cello and had some cute dance moves when the bow wasn't moving.

What a great show! Hopefully their Beta Love tour has a few gaps open for a festival appearance or two this year so I can check them out again with fresh legs - I spent half the show in the bleachers due to some mean Bikram sessions in the days leading up to the show. Namaste yo.

The iP3 Studio Series from iHome. Don’t just hear it. Feel it!

New Releases >> May: Daft Punk | Vampire Weekend | Little Boots | CocoRosie | Fitz & The Tantrums

May >> the force be with you. That is, the force of legendary robots storm trooping into this month with new and very long awaited albums. Whether you're human, not human, no longer human or whatever, you have been waiting nearly a decade for this month.

Daft Punk >> Get Lucky

If you were at Coachella with me during Weekend 1 or happened to be at home watching Saturday Night Live at that time, then you saw a glimpse of Daft Punk's new single and video 'Get Lucky' off Random Access Memories which will drop on MAY-21. The robots have come back in judgement day fashion to re-invent and re-invigorate real electronic music and take back what they helped pioneer way back when Skrillex was popping his first zits and Porter Robinson was still shitting his knickers.

Get a $10.00 Music Credit at eMusic.com!

In addition to what we've seen released featuring Pharrel Williams and Nile Rogers, Daft Punk also joins forces with artists from Julian Casablancas to DJ Falcon on the upcoming release. The innovativeness of Daft Punk plus the select global coalition of contributors certainly make Random Access Memories the most anticipated release in years, for me at least. They've done a nice job containing leakage of the rest of the album too. I pretty much can't find shit but that will just make the 21st that much more savory. So in the mean time, here are some other notable albums to get after. Vampire Weekend. Little Boots. Fitz. CocoRosie. Sold.

Fitz & The Tantrums More Than Just A Dream >> 5.7

Little Boots Nocturnes >> 5.7

She & Him Volume 3 >> 5.7

Talib Kweli Prisoner Of Conscious >> 5.7
