Steve Aoki >> Takes the Cake in Scottsdale [Maya Day+Nightclub]

Steve Aoki >> just can't get enough of Scottsdale and old town just can't get enough of his cake in the face. Just a few short months after a Turbulance-driven set at AXIS RADIUS, SLE brought Mr. Aoki back to spin a Sunday funday pool party at the all new Maya Day and Nightclub.

Aoki has certainly established himself as a premier artist and entertainer of the past decade so it's no surprise that Sunday's set was insane and full of energy. It's also no surprise that in addition to bringing a nasty set he brought his repertoire of props and shenanigans that have become a standard whenever he is on the bill.

Each year, Steve Aoki performs 200-300 shows and most, if not all, of those shows he brings some cake to crunch on the crowd, a few bottles of champagne to shower them with and an inflatable raft to ride around in on a sea of people dancing about in front of the booth. Standard Aoki party really.

However, each venue is different and be it a festival stage or pool party, the booth that he rocks is constructed differently everywhere and lies in a unique position. Yesterday, I was standing behind Aoki for most of the first hour of his set and witnessed him profiling the environment, testing the strength of his surroundings and planning how his monkeying around would go down.

In addition to being a world class DJ, producer and performer Steve Aoki is also an incredible acrobat and quite a climber. I doubt the booth at Maya was built for this type of tomfoolery but Aoki made it his personal jungle gym and commanded every crevasse like a Cirque Du Soleil all-star.

Aoki set-tripped a great Sunday funday and clearly SLE and Maya have introduced some next level shit to the valley. This event was just the tip of the desert iceberg in grandiose pool parties that will ensue this summer. Over the next few weeks, Maya Day and Nightclub will see Kaskade, Nervo and Otto Knows just to name a few. Cheers to the valley taking it up a few notches in 2013 and jeers to the Memorial-sized hangover this weekend has probably bestowed upon you.
