Tiesto + Porter Robinson >> Louder Than Boom in Scottsdale [Sound Wave Music Festival]

Sound Wave >> hit the desert again this past Saturday for the 4th installment of the electronic music festival and has become the official kickoff to the Fall. This time SLE and Disco Donnie brought the increasingly huge valley event to Scottsdale right in the heart of Old Town in the midst of a block party surrounding Maya Day+Nightclub the W Scottsdale.

Since its inception, Sound Wave has brought huge acts like Calvin Harris and R3hab who headlined the fest last year while Kaskade, Z-Trip and Dirty South set off the main stage in the Fall of 2011 with Diplo and Boyz Noise in its Spring. This year Porter Robinson brought it extra hard on the bill to warm it up for none other than king Tiesto.

It was an interesting combo of artists I've come to respect over the years. Porter Robinson just hit my radar within the last few years so I hadn't seen him do a live set prior to Saturday. While he may barely be old enough to legally drink, his technique is more refined than many a vet in the industry.

Tiesto is even more sophisticated, fine-tuned and has been atop my faves list since 2000 and in the game since before Porter Robinson was born. He knows how to fucking 'Bend It Like You Don't Care' and his undying ability to captivate a crowd that transcends generations of EDM is still impressive. He brought it even harder than I've seen in sets past yet still maintained that core aura that brings us all together to dance free in love.

I've always appreciated Tiesto's way of identifying with everyone. As a fan of all music types myself, it's probably why many of my favorites across various genres continue to collaborate with him.

He has remixed, produced for and partnered up with artists like Calvin Harris, Bloc Party frontman Kele Okereke, Metric's Emily Haines, Jes Brieden from Motorcyle, Imogen Heap of Frou Frou and Sarah McLachlan. Those alone are insanely erratic and they're just a small sample and many others of the like blared super Tiesto style remixes of Bruno Mars, Ellie Goulding, Krewella, etc.

But my 2 favorite productions of the sort by Tiesto are 'I Will Be Here' which he did with Sneaky Sound System and 'Feel It In My Bones' which he did with Tegan & Sara. Fortunately for all of us Sound Wave surfers in attendance he dropped them both deep into his set. Purely epical and icing on a short 1.5 hour set that packed a punch just as hard as the 4 to 6 hour bangers I've experienced of his in the past.

Tiesto also put down a really nasty remix of 'I Love It' by Icona Pop. I'm still not sick of that song somehow and his cut just rejuvenated that infatuation. Icona Pop may have even been the night's theme having heard 3 other DJ's drop some form of it as well but I don't care. I love it! See, told you.

Let's talk about the operation for a sec. To be honest I was a little bummed to hear that Sound Wave would not be at Big Surf again this year like it was in the past but the setup was good and having the option to check out other sets at Maya or W was a cool bonus. Those provided 2 additional distinct and purposeful atmospheres if I wanted to lounge, cool off in the pool, listen to some different music or just needed a change in scenery. The location is obviously a plus too when the pre and post festival destinations nearby are abundant and posh as well.

Big ups to the artists who killed it [straight murdered], the event coordinators for putting it together properly [mad propers] and even the thousands in attendance who kept it fun as shit whilst demonstrating class and etiquette [party on y'all].

New Releases >> September: Kaskade | MGMT | Holy Ghost! | Grouplove | Nine Inch Nails | The Presets | The Naked And Famous | Goldfrapp | Icona Pop

September >> do you remember? Do you remember how fantastic September is? Do you remember what tidings this month brings us? Say that you remember that this is the time we all fall back, the dust storm settles, cool is in session, yada yada yada. In terms of new music and it pertaining to the possible, probable and pending album tours, this September specifically is something to look forward to.

Kaskade >> Atmosphere

This month some killer artists return with some deadly new releases including fresh shit from Holy Ghost!, The Naked And Famous, MGMT, The Presets, Goldfrapp, Grouplove and Nine Inch Nails. Then there's the debut artists and projects like Sons Of The Sea featuring Brandon Boyd which should be an interesting vehicle that may 'Drive' Incubus back into this galaxy.

But aside from the aforementioned collective greatness what I'm most excited for is Atmosphere, the new album from Kaskade. After nearly a decade of remaining one of my favorite electronic artists, he again has me anxiously awaiting for a follow-up to Fire & Ice because every studio release gets all the more better and that's really saying a lot because the stuff he dropped in the early 2000's and beyond are fucking brilliantly strong still.

Rancid + Transplants >> Time Bomb in Tempe [Marquee Theatre]

Tim Armstrong >> rolled through the desert again for another epic showcase of both Rancid and Transplants at Marquee Theatre in Tempe. It was a jam packed show that filled the venue with variety of punks varying in ages from 15 to 50 and all there to rock out and get our fucking faces melted off.

Rancid >> Marquee Theatre

Faces certainly melted to the max but it wasn't just because it was a 110 in Tempe on Wednesday night. Time Bomb Tim and The Transplants went on around 8:30 and wasted no time getting hyper. I was especially impressed with Travis Barker's drumming. Like holy shit status.

I've never seen Transplants do it live before but I have seen Blink-182 a dozen times and don't recall him ever getting after it nasty like he did during Transplants' super sick set. It was cool to see even the little intricate things absent from the audio like snap drumstick twirls between measures during their cover of 'Razors In The Night'.

Sonos Wireless Music Player

I was pleased they didn't play too much of In A Warzone, their new album which doesn't hold a candle to their self-titled album or Haunted Cities. Said first 2 albums contain my favorite tracks 'Gangsters and Thugs', 'Diamonds And Guns' and 'Tall Cans In The Air' which they ended their set with while we embarrassingly had to put plastic cups in the air. Sorry, Tim!

Transplants >> Marquee Theatre

Rancid played for like 2 hours, maybe longer. They played like 30 songs spanning albums over the last 20 years. They've been around for a long time but they still do it with mad energy and rock the fuck out all day. It must have been like 125 degrees inside but we rocket out too and everyone in the place was drenched with sweat when the 'Time Bomb' dropped to end the set.

They encored with 'Radio' and 'Ruby Soho' and again told us how Tempe was the best crowd they'd played for. That was the kicker to such a kick-ass show. Now we just need that new Rancid album to drop. Boom.

Slightly Stoopid + Atmosphere >> Kickin Up Dust in the Desert [Mesa Amphitheatre]

Slightly Stoopid >> and Atmosphere made their way back to the desert on Thursday playing another show at Mesa Amphitheatre and kickin' up dust on a hot, hot, not so dry desert day. It was only the second show on the Kickin Up Dust summer concert tour - and probably the hottest - but all the featured artists put it down to the max, albeit drenched in sweat and playing an early show per City of Mesa noise ordinance regulations [because loud noises after 10pm is the devil!].

Slightly Stoopid >> Mesa Amphitheatre

Slightly Stoopid braved the elements yet again here, which they did their last time back to AZ with 311 on the Unity Tour at the same venue last August. The San Diegans played for 2 hours right up until the 10:00pm Mesa mandatory kill switch.

It was a predominantly reggae-based set which probably saved me and the other nearly 5,000 in attendance. I would have liked to hear a bit more of the punk rock reggae style shit or even more than just a few songs from The Longest Barrel Ride, which is definitely my favorite album, but I guess I should just accept that those days are over.

I might be getting too old to even be a circle pit guardian, let alone be in one or near the madness so I'll leave the good ol' days of 'Don't Fuck'n Look' and such in memoriam. Too fucking hot for mosh anyway, right?

They covered 'Leaving On A Jet Plane' and a few other oldies that I've never heard them perform before and that's pretty cool. It's pretty cool! Sorry, that was a Miley Cyrus Show moment.

The olloclip is a quick-connect lens solution for the iPhone – now available for the iPhone 5.

I didn't get there on time to check out Tribal Seeds but that was intentional as they went on at 5:30 when it was still about 589 degrees out. However, I did get there in time to see Atmosphere who pretty much crushed it. I haven't been a big fan of Atmosphere for - well, I was never actually a fan - but I should give them due propers for throwing it down. Slug gets on the profound status with his lyrics these days.

Maybe he always got down like that, I don't know. I've seen Atmosphere at some festivals going back to like 2008 and never perceived them as deep [derp, more so haha]. But I guess I wasn't all growns up and all growns up enough to appreciate the story he tells but now I'm in the matrix.

That was a sick sick show although it was hot as a motherfucker but I'm glad I survived. I'm hoping the next Mesa Amp mandatory show is in the Fall because I love this venue when the weather is money but sincerely hate it this time of year. I guess I'm just a bitch in this weather. Over and out.

New Releases >> July: Jay-Z | Gogol Bordello | Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros | Earl Sweatshirt | Editors

July >> marks the beginning of the back half of 2013. There have been some epic releases thus far this year [Phoenix, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Empire Of The Sun, The Limousines], game changers [Daft Punk, Kanye West] as well as some disappointing releases [Transplants]. Many have been long awaited and others came out of nowhere to make a huge splash. This month is no different as July presents new released from Gogol Bordello, Edward Share & The Magnetic Zeros, Pretty Lights, Robin Thicke, Pepper and Earl Sweatshirt.

Jay-Z >> Magna Carta Holy Grail

Oh yeah, and a guy that goes by the name of Jay-Z. He's arguably the king in this game to most [although he didn't Watch The Throne that closely because I think Yeezus may have just taken over] and was supposed to retire like 10 years ago but he keeps dropping new stuff every couple of years when the world thinks he is done. It seems like he is somehow working with more than 24 hours in a day with everything he's been able to accomplish day in and day out.

The olloclip is a quick-connect lens solution for the iPhone – now available for the iPhone 5. More power to Hova though. If this album brings even half of what the aforementioned collaboration with Kanye brought then this should be a masterpiece. Would you expect anything less? Here are some other notable new releases dropping in July to mark on your calendar.

Editors The Weight Of Your Love >> 7.2

Pretty Lights A Color Map Of The Sun >> 7.2

Jay-Z Magna Carta Holy Grail >> 7.4

Skylar Grey Don't Look Down >> 7.9

Chris Brown X >> 7.16

Mayer Hawthorne Where Does This Door Go >> 7.16

Pepper Pepper >> 7.16

Pet Shop Boys Electric >> 7.16

Pusha T My Name Is My Name >> 7.16

Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros >> 7.23

Gogol Bordello Pura Vida Conspiracy >> 7.23

We Came As Romans Tracing Back Roots >> 7.23

Earl Sweatshirt Doris >> 7.30

Robin Thicke Blurred Lines >> 7.30

Parallels >> Electrimotion in Phoenix [Rhythm Room]

Parallels >> returned to Phoenix for the 3rd time and another in the midst of a sweltering desert summer night that topped 118 degrees in the middle of a severe dust storm. Last night they made their debut at The Rhythm Room and showed off 2 new band members, some new hardware and added a full-length album of electric awesomeness to the arsenal.

Parallels >> Rhythm Room

Okay so maybe some of the aforementioned was already introduced last summer at Bar Smith but I wasn't there.  The last time I saw Parallels was their previous atop the roof at Bar Smith when Visionaries had recently dropped and they played that entire album pretty much in its entirety. It was only Holly Dodson and the other original member at that point. Now her brother Nick has taken over on drums and a multi-talented synth master named Artem for added depth.

Nick is charismatic and an innovative kit specialist. During the sound check I got to hear samples of new tech plugged in on the kick drum which added a variety of killer futuristic back beats. Artem is the wild card drawn, rocking the shit out of the Korg MS2000 but jams keyboards, guitar, vocals, etc. Along with Holly's vision and already demonstrated prowess, it was apparent when I spoke with them that they are really happy with this formula and don't see any limits to what they can do creatively.

While they love being on the road and playing for a new crowd in every city it also seems like they're anxious to get back to the studio and wrap up the EP that's due to drop later this year. It will be another product of Holly's continued musical maturity but enhanced with the current formula's contributions so I'm just as anxious as they seemingly are.

High-Quality iPod/iPhone Accessories

Last night they only performed 3 songs from Visionaries but 'Dry Blood', 'Nightmares' and the closer in 'Ultralight' are my favorite ones from that release so I'm cool with it.  They blended these in with the illest shit from last year's XII album including 'Things Fall Apart' and 'Ritual Dancer' which they opened with. I love this album and I would have been happy to hear it front to back but it ended up being a fairly short set due to time constraints? Or weather? I don't know but what they performed was potent to the max and the entire bill that also featured Trails and Ways and Pastries With Teeth was definitely a treat.

If you're in the LA area or San Francisco this weekend, go check them out at Los Globos or The Great American Music Hall, respectively, and you'll get to dance your ass off to some really rad electro.

PS. Be on the lookout for my interview with the band after the holiday weekend. They are mad cool and had lots of interesting shit to talk about. Peace!

Setlist: Ritual Dancer * Dry Blood * Electrimotion * Nightmares * Love & Devotion * Moonlight Desires * Things Fall Apart * Ultralight
