NYE > Streets of San Francisco ft. Steve Aoki

Eye heart San Francisco > the desert Party Posse took an excursion out to the city again to celebrate the coming of a brand new year and yet another amazing adventure, this time to Fort Mason for the Streets of San Francisco New Years Eve party.

Steve Aoki

The dawning of 2011 was brought in by the electronic hipster noise of DJ Steve Aoki and without any surprise he commemorated the gala in sick Dim Mak form. The sexy, saucy sell-out soldiers of celebration witnessed Steve Aoki command the marina's fort with some of his hardest house.

tunesday 12.21 > Ghostface Killah

Ghostface Killah Apollo Kids > just in time for the holidays and what better way to end the fiscal music year than with Ghost's 9th solo album? It's a perfect complement to the home-for-the-holidays hoo-riding with the homies.

Ghostface Killah > Apollo Kids

As you'd expect, Apollo Kids features some of your favorite Wu-Tang Clan members like Method Man, GZA, and Raekwon along with extended chamber ventricles like Killah Priest and Cappadonna. The kicker is the lineup of guest artists Ghostface brings to the party including Busta Rhymes, Redman and The Game.

Perhaps Apollo Kids' core competency is the pleasantly distinct variation in tracks. While I've always appreciated the verses Ghost has laid down on Wu albums, his solo releases have, for the most part, lacked uniqueness from one another and furthermore within each release.

However, this LP defies that monotony featuring Spanish guitar and harmonica cut into 'Black Tequila', Erykah Badu-like vocals on 'Superstar', a 60's soul sample of The Intruders in '2getha Baby', a retro mashup of 'Shout' by Tears For Fears in the hook of 'Starkology' all in harmony with Ghostface Killah's somberly smooth tone and flow.

Cop this disc - it's a breath of fresh Ghostface air and a solid project, especially following his R&B Jodeci-themed release from last year. It's under $10 almost everywhere right now so well worth the C.R.E.A.M. even if you're not a Wu-Tang loyalist     :j Marc

tunesday 12.7 > Daft Punk / deadmau5

Electronic bliss? > Daft Punk and deadmau5, two of the most iconic names in house, release albums today. Is this of the utmost excellence of pre-holiday gifts?

Not necessarily.

Daft Punk > TRON: Legacy

Daft Punk TRON: Legacy > the good news is that the new upcoming film from Disney will have a really kick-ass score. Unfortunately, that's exactly what the release is: a score and not a soundtrack in the traditional sense. With the exception of a few tracks, TRON: Legacy just lacks the high-octane you can usually expect from Daft Punk. My advice is to skip this release and wait for some follow-up TRON-mixes from Daft Punk or other artists.

deadmau5 > 4x4=12

deadmau5 4x4=12 > the deceased rodent is back with sick high-BPM infused release that changes moods throughout. The front half tracks are the strong, disco-endorsed beats that will get even Stephen Hawking to get up and move. Then there's the transition into the mild comedown, almost in a Kaskade-like fashion. Truth be told 4x4=12 is probably not as phenomenal as deadmau5's previous releases but still probably one of the top electronic outputs of the year overall. Get this album for your party, car, gym mix, whatever. Just get it because you are certain to enjoy.     :j Marc

friday showzen > Slowpoke decade

10 years > of Slowpoke was celebrated this weekend at the Sail Inn in Tempe. Friday's annual holiday show marked their 10-year anniversary and it was pleasantly and familiarly killer.

Snakeburner headlined and the Smith Family Band was also on the bill but the live rendition of Slowpoke's Yesterday's Gone was what the got the crowd going. Andy's slappin' da base and Bud's drumming along with with guitar/vocals from Alex and Derek created the nostalgia eggnog and brought everyone back to the beginning of it all. Each song was practically a collaboration with the audience as songs like 'Skullz' and 'Sleepy Chaser' were sung in unison with Derek.

Here's some scotch-infused footage of 'Tastes Like Burning' for your enjoyment [sorry about the thunderous drums and bass - apparently I was parked right next to the Andy and Bud speakers]     :j Marc

zTALK > vinyl destination: DJ Z-Trip

Music evolution > the transition to digital set-wrecking is making its stake in the club scene, but is the tragic demise of vinyl taking the soul of the discotheque?

DJ Z-Trip

Technology’s presence in the club today is as strong as ever and it’s no secret that the continuing advance has made life easier for DJ’s. Sure, new music to add to the repertoire is as easy as a few mouse-clicks and jockeys can now travel with their entire music collection without bringing along crates of vinyl to baby-sit.

But true masters of the craft know that there is a certain energy needed from the crowd in order to keep the art form moving forward and that momentum has everything to do with the crowd’s response.

I spoke with the desert-bred DJ Z-Trip to get the scoop on the impact of all-digital sets. Z-Trip definitely has a knack for getting a crowd into the mix and knows how necessary it is to make people really feel the music. As the first DJ to headline Operation MySpace in Kuwait, Z felt it was important to give the troops a show that would help take their minds off of the war for a bit.

Z-Trip also played the Bonnaroo Music Festival in Manchester, Tennessee impelling 70K fans and their lighters to simulate a giant birthday cake before blowing them out with a mash-up of “Dust in the Wind.”

Here’s what a true master of the craft had to say about today’s club scene:

MARC: When did you get started as a DJ?

Z-TRIP: It’s coming up on 20 years.

MARC: What kind of equipment were you working with when you started spinning?

Z-TRIP: I had one belt-drive turntable and one direct-drive turntable. Only one of them had pitch control, so it was a bit tough to mix. I also a Pyramid mixer - real beat up stuff. I saved money all summer that year to buy a pair of used Technics 1200’s.

MARC: What about now?

Z-TRIP: I use the same turntables now actually. Well, not the same ones, but the same model. They are the standard to me. I also use a Rane TTM 57 SL Mixer and Serato, which is a program that allows me to use digital files as well as vinyl. So this makes it a bit easier, but I still prefer mixing with records.

MARC: How has today's technology changed the club scene?

Z-TRIP: I think in some ways it’s made things a little better, but in other ways it’s made it tougher. Now, with the ability to find and play anything under the sun via internet, most people are playing everything they want to, versus what they could only find in local record stores. That’s great but I think there was more room for creativity when people had boundaries; you actually had a ceiling you could hit before you had to stop hunting for stuff and actually work with what you had. The over-saturation of music and DJ’s is making the real good ones not stand out as much. It’s getting harder and harder to find people with the talent that goes along with the great record collection and the actual art of all this is fading, in my opinion. There aren’t many Jedi’s left.

MARC: Do you think the effect has been positive?

Z-TRIP: There is good and bad behind all of it. On one hand, technology has brought new life into this art form and that is well needed; but on the other hand, it’s opened the door to those who don’t understand the art and are just here for the benefits. Before, one used to have to invest lots of time and money into this before they were even close to being ready to be heard or seen. If they were serious and went through the proper channels, they would slowly learn it and evolve into something. Now, with the technology being what it is, it’s open to everybody and there aren’t as many obstacles that would weed out the bullshit. So you get a lot of thrill seekers who flood the market and then drop off after a couple years. Those people just get in the way; very rarely do they bring anything to the table that’s worthwhile.

MARC: Do you think the soul of the discotheque is still present in an iPod generated set?

Z-TRIP: I don’t think it’s dead but there is a sense of life support kicking in. The soul will always be there, but it’s not as strong as I’ve seen it in the past. Instant gratification at your fingertips breeds a short attention span, which deadens the experience. Some of the best tunes don’t even start to unfold until three or four minutes into the track. Try playing a song for four or five minutes in a club these days and people will leave the dance floor. But oddly enough, that’s the sort of thing that people really need to get back on track. They need the long road; there is way more soul to be felt in the extended version.

MARC: How has the digital transition impacted this generation's aspiring DJ's?

Z-TRIP: Nobody goes out of their house to buy music anymore and that sucks. I can tell you firsthand that being in a record store is more inspiring than being online.

MARC: Any other thoughts you would like to express?

Z-TRIP: I think it’s important for people to always try and push the boundaries or walk outside of their comfort zone with this shit. If not, it doesn’t stand a chance. The more you hear other people doing one thing musically, the more you should try and do the opposite. There is so much that hasn’t even been done yet. It takes someone with guts and a real love for music to inspire positive change. That is what I look for when I’m in the club. It’s always about taking chances.

NFC Worst > 49ers @ Cardinals

Toilet Bowl 2010 > will be held tonight in Glendale, AZ. The match-up is between the San Francisco 49ers [3-7] and last year's division champs Arizona Cardinals [3-7].

49ers head coach > Mike Singletary

Both teams went into the season with high expectations only to disappointingly become the laughing stock of football. But in a division of inferiority, the two tied for last are also tied for 2nd since the Rams and Seahawks have losing records; both teams are 5-6 and will be only 1 game ahead of tonight's winner.

Nonetheless, it should be a fun game and a feisty one at that, given the recently escalated rivalry between the 9ers and Cards. After all, it's still Monday Night Football.

GO NINERS!     :j Marc

tunesday 11.23 > kanye west

Kanye West My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy > it's been a minute since Kanye was last in the limelight and two since his last album, but the time away hibernating boded well.

Kanye West > My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is the title of the album released today but also the theme of the seemingly trying time Kanye has had living with himself this past year. Apparently what was left of his sanity after the Taylor Swift VMA incident was further deteriorated into almost a Van Gogh-like state - okay so this is sort of an exaggeration but check out the above album cover which is one of several abstract artworks that do not depict an animated, academia-oriented bear. He also joined Twitter this summer and his tweets indicate he isn't quite all there - but he's been very entertaining nonetheless.

But it's all the better for fans of Kanye West and his music. Whatever it is/was inspired another gem and this album is impressive the first time through and repeatedly stronger thereafter. The beats are crisp and while some of West's lyrics don't always make sense, his flow is undeniably as good as if not better than it has always been.

In the album you'll hear tracks featuring Jay-Z, Rick Ross and John Legend, to name just a few. At the moment the illest of them all is 'Gorgeous' with Kid Cudi and Raekwon. Another sick song is 'Monster' featuring more from Jay-Z and Rick Ross with a touch of Bon Iver and Nicki Minaj, who tears this track up in a major way [btw, today is also Pink Friday, the release of her new album].

This is a dope dope album with a handful of mix tape material. Pick it up and make it snappy    :j Marc
