Pat’s Run > run walk honor

Pat Tillman [1976-2004] > is probably one of the utmost G products of Arizona State University and this Saturday he will be honored at the 7th annual Pat's Run which starts and finishes outside of Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe.

Pat Tillman

Straight out of NOR*CAL, Tillman was a PAC-10 Defensive Player of the Year playing LB at ASU and he graduated with honors from its prestigious business school. Subsequently, he played a few solid years in the NFL for the Arizona Cardinals before turning down a $3.6M contract to enlist in the Army and serve following 9-11. (more…)

Nu Musik > The Raveonettes

The Raveonettes Raven in the Grave > today the noisy Danish duo release their 5th full length album since forming in Copenhagen a decade ago, giving 2011 music its first superb cut out of April. The Raveonettes

This LP is much more mellow than any stuff you've probably heard from the Raves in the past, especially in the middle 2 tracks 'Summer Moon' and 'Let Me On Out' when the tempo slows, the drums disappear and the chimes make their presence more known. The rest of Raven in the Grave reflects the classic Raveonettes' sound but reflected in a more mature manner. The vocals are well balanced between Sune and Sharin when they're not in perfect harmony and they seem to embrace the indie noise they helped pioneer and strengthen with heavily continuous distortion and echoing strings. Nu Musik > The Sounds / YELLE / Panic! at the Disco

March Radness > this month we've received gifts from the music gods in the likes of long-awaited releases from The Strokes, Toro y Moi and Lupe Fiasco, among others. Just what did we do to deserve a triple shot of new music on the last Tuesday of March? It's Madness!

Panic! at the Disco

Panic! at the Disco Vices & Virtues > Panic! dropped their first album A Fever You Can't Sweat Out in 2005 and it was a gem and then some. Three long years later they released Pretty. Odd. which they disappointedly took into a different direction. Their sophomore album wasn't awful but it just wasn't what I or seemingly anyone else wanted or expected after such a fun breakthrough debut. (more…)

Wednesday Showzen > Girl Talk

Girl Talk oh no > this hump day Girl Talk made his return to Tempe to mash our faces up with his incredible intricate illness on the wheels of steel. It was another sellout crowd at the Marquee Theatre but this time comprised of an army of bright clad hip-hoppers, punk-rockers and pop-lockers and it did not stop moving from Girl Talk's inaugural Ozzy-drop until the mashed-up 'Bittersweet Symphony' encore.

Check out the set's opening and you can imagine how wild it progressively got by the end of the night in front of such a brilliant artist and killer DJ.      :j Marc

Nu Musik > The Strokes

The Strokes Angles > today Julian Casablancas and company returned with a far-too-long awaited release of a brand new LP. No one should have to wait 5 years for a follow-up album especially from a band that re-revolutionized modern rock in the new millenium, but this release may be worth the wait. The Strokes The Strokes have brilliantly returned with a relatively consistent yet more mature and crisp sound. Familiar tempo and chords find themselves into Angles but what seemingly makes the boys all growns up and all growns up is some not-too-erratic experimentations that fit nicely into the subtle direction you'd expect after their last album First Impressions of Earth. Some new dub-like guitar pedals can be heard on the album's opener and my favorite 'Machu Picchu' as well as some vaguely psychedelic riffs in 'Games'. (more…)

Nate Dogg > Nobody Does it Better

Nate Dogg

RIP Nate Dogg > yesterday the world lost another ex-Deathrow all-star and one of the godfathers of the G-Funk Era. Having dropped his vocals on nearly 50 releases to reach the Billboard charts, he paved the way for R&B smoothness over rap tracks and is arguably the best sidekick ever in soul artistry. (more…)

soundsystem showzen > 311

Homebrew in Tempe > featured 311 at Marquee Theatre and as expected the Omaha Stylee quintet killed it with the famous energy that keep them elite amongst actives after nearly 2 decades. They opened with 'Down' and that's exactly what shit went on Mill avenue Tuesday night.

311

311 killed it as expected because at this point it's beyond as usual after a reliable dozen years of superbly shredding 10 shows I've seen in that span. They are a quality band to the max because every one of those shows were vastly unique particularly in terms of the set list. (more…)
