Lollapalooza > Day 3: the Finale

Lollapalooza Day 3 > aka the finale, aka Rainy Sunday. It rained hard on Sunday so it's not just a clever name. Being that the finale's details from over a week ago are tough to recall at this point [sorry, I've been in San Francisco for the Outside Lands music festival, pics/vids to follow] and it was a late start to the day's festivities anyway [the third day of a music festival should be brutal or you're not doing the first 2 days correctly] I'll keep this short and sweet.

Lollapalooza Mud Shoes

After a few drinks and a few shots at Congress [courtesy of my credit card roulette shortcomings] the last 4 standing of the Lolla squad finally made it into the festival around 5pm. Daedelus, Flogging Molly and Cage the Elephant were some notable acts we missed per our Lolla-gagging. It only took the 2-minute walk to the first beer tent we saw before a few sparse, friendly drops of rain came down. Upon the purchase of the first beers inside those friendly drops turned into a heavy downpour. Everyone around could be seen scurrying to the nearest tent, tree, potty or whatever to stay dry for what would hopefully be a 10-15 minute shower.

Even the Chicago natives were surprised to see the rain not letting up after 20 minutes. At that point we and seemingly everyone else decided it was pointless to hide from the rain and to celebrate it. The collective ombrophobia lifted and a festival of loonies resurfaced from the mini forests and makeshift shelters. Soon there was singing in the rain, dancing in the rain, stomping in puddles - all mediocre in comparison to what rainy day shenanigans would ensue next: belly flops, puddle surfing, mudslides, human bowling balls knocking over pyramidally arranged recycling bins, etc. Good entertainment while we awaited Arctic Monkeys to go on at the Universal Music stage.

Arctic Monkeys played a great show followed by the headlining Foo Fighters on the same stage. Both played mostly in sporadic bursts of heavy rain and got the thousands and thousands of heads in front to become mudpeople rocking out to some of the most energetic rock of the entire weekend. Dave Grohl is the king. I became even more of a fan after that Foo set, which I only saw an hour of in order to catch 20 minutes of Kid Cudi [pretty good] in the Perry's tent and the last half hour of Deadmau5 [spectacular] on the Bud Light stage. Cold War Kids on the Google+ stage at the same time just wasn't in the cards for us or anyone because 4 conflicting acts is just too tough to manage. But I was really happy with what I saw and really happy it was over. I needed to put myself in the laundry, eat $20 worth of food at the Weiner Circle and begin the 4-day recharging process before the next big music festival: Outside Lands.

I'll definitely be at Lollapalooza again next year. I've already begun packing.

Lollapalooza > Day 2

Lollapalooza Day 2 > was even more madness for the masses. I thought Friday was crazy but it was dead compared to Saturday, the day that most chose to go if they were to go to only one. Makes sense. People have jobs to go to during the week. Perhaps the out-of-towners got in late the night before. Maybe it was the weather - it was pretty hot on Friday and near perfect Saturday. Whatever it was, the difference seemed at least 20K heads more in the crowd and each of those rallied early on and with a purpose.

After brunch and a few trips to the Bloody Mary bar at Bull & Bear followed a failed attempt to scalp a ticket into the show for a procrastinating friend [the ratio of buyers to sellers was at least 20:1 from what I saw in that 30 minutes and based on what the people I talked to paid the going rate for Saturday tickets was about $280]. By this time it was approaching 2pm and almost time for Friendly Fires to begin their set. Having bought my Lollapalooza tickets the week they went on sale, there was only so much sorrow I could feel for the friend who would not make it inside and I needed to rock out again.

Friendly Fires

Meanwhile at the Bud Light stage, Friendly Fires were getting going and so was the crowd. They played a healthy number of songs across both of their studio releases plus some other tracks that I didn't recognize but really dug. They got to 'Hurting' toward the end of their set, which seemed to get the crowd moving the most - including me since it's probably my favorite of their songs. Solid performance but I left before they finished because I needed to hit the nearest beer tent.

Beer in hand along with an iPhone working off an ever-fluctuating 2 or 3 bars of signal strength I continued my solo mission to the Perry's tent for Super Smash Bros. They were a lot better than I thought they would be and I was flabbergasted to see the tent popping like it was the night before but in the mid-afternoon and in broad daylight. When they wrapped up Perryetty & Chris Cox seemed to have begun their set immediately after but I stepped out to meet up with my partner in crime and her squad. I had to race the crowd into the street's open areas and get dibs on the limited phone service. I don't know if that was an effective strategy to get texts to go through but I did it all weekend in desperation. Phone service was sporadically okay in certain areas at best and at most times just awful.

The Drums

After the roundup we caught the last of Perry Farrell's fun DJ set with Chris Cox then made our way to the Google+ stage for The Drums. That was definitely the most fun of the day at that point. The beers were going down mad quick amongst us and I randomly ran into some friends that I didn't think I would see at all at the show. So our groups joined forces and I led a co-ed coalition to the Sony stage where Local Natives had just began their set.

We posted up in prime position between Local Natives and the nearest beer tent. That plus the potties we would eventually need repeatedly created a perfect equilateral triangle for the time being. We took several turns to each point in various combinations and in various subgroups which ultimately lead to my not remembering the last of Local Natives, all of Atmosphere and most of Cee Lo. I'm pretty sure I was having a lot of fun though. Standard.

Lollapalooza Crowd for Eminem

Eminem was slated to turn this Debbie out at 8:30 so we made our way to the Music Unlimited stage about 15 minutes before then. It took that entire time to maneuver through the massive crowd. With several years of crowd knife skills and a newly formed scissor alliance we made it to within 25 feet of the stage and in front of all these suckers above. He opened with 'Square Dance' which I thought was dope. That song is so underrated and it's a top 10 Em track for me and a healthy portion of the crowd too, based on the participation when he gave us the mic to shout, 'So won't you please jump off my dick, lay off and stay off!'.

Em had a few surprise guests. I guessed Royce Da 5'9" would make an appearance since they just dropped their collaboration album Hell: The Sequel on us as Bad Meets Evil just a few months ago. They did 'Fast Lane' and another song from that release before Eminem asked if he could bring out another friend. Enter Bruno Mars for his vocals in 'Lighters'. The crowd went nuts at that point although I heard mostly girls in that uproar. He was a pleasant surprise guest but I was hoping for Lil Wayne during 'No Love' or even Dre, Fitty, Rihanna, anyone else. Whatever. The sky full of lighters was actually pretty cool.

I had to pee about 30 minutes into the set but I couldn't leave. Not yet. But 15 minutes after that it was starting to hurt so getting out of that mob with their elbows jammed into my kidneys was mandatory. To the potties I went. On a solo mission and with no one in line I was done in a flash. I didn't go back for the last half of Slim Shady though. The Google+ stage was just a 2 minute walk away where Beirut was playing  so it was a no-brainer to hit that up.

Beirut

Beirut was superb. It was a bit of a drastic change of pace and the crowd was about 200 times smaller. It was a breath of fresh air following the 12 hours of getting after it. They played an extended version of 'Nantes' toward the end of the show and even came back out for an encore after they they gave us thanks. It was the first time I'd heard a Lolla act do an encore after 2 days at Grant Park.

Lollapalooza Saturday

After Beirut I made my way toward the exits and inhaled 2 chicken sandwiches on the way out. My Morning Jacket was finishing up at the Bud Light stage but I didn't go down there. I could hear them playing some good music from in front of the sandwich stand and I couldn't take my eyes off the majesty of a clear Chicago Saturday night. It was another great day and night at the fest and I couldn't wait for what Sunday had in store.

New Music Tuesday > Lollapalooza

Various Artists Lollapalooza Sampler 2011 > the map that got handed to us immediately upon getting through the gates had a gift attached: 40 free songs on iTunes!

Lollapalooza Sampler 2011

I just redeemed this bad boy and the Lolla compilation turned out to be 53 tracks from various artists who performed over the 3 days. It's a cool mix thus far. I'm getting an opportunity to listen to a lot of the artists that I didn't see over the weekend for one reason or another.

Many I've never heard of [Grouplove, Kids These Days, Pretty Lights, Rival Schools]. Some I'd seen before and really enjoyed but just couldn't convince my body to rally that early [Daedelus & Flogging Molly started at 2 and 4 but even that late is tough on Sunday]. Others I missed because it just wasn't in the cards to get after it, mainly because of the conflicts with other headlining acts [My Morning Jacket vs Beirut & Eminem, Cold War Kids vs Deadmau5, Kid Cudi & Foo Fighters].

Aside from the aforementioned misses, there are tracks from show-stoppers that are just sweet reminders of what a great outing it turned out to be. Local Natives, The Kills and Deadmau5, to name a few, killed it and did happen to get to these particular tracks that are featured on the sampler.

If you haven't already thrown away this gem-disguised-as-garbage, locate it and enter those magic alphanumerics into your iTunes. Otherwise, Tweet at me and maybe we can work something out ;)

Wunder Showzen > in the desert this weekend

Shows in the desert > this weekend I'll be in San Francisco for Outside Lands and I say you should too. Maybe I'm crazy to do another 3-day festival of music and madness right after Lollapalooza this past weekend but this is the shit that I live for.

Anyway, if you aren't fortunate to join me and the Party Posse back where I was imported from and you're sticking around in the 115 degrees, make your way out to these spots for some great music that I'm slightly disappointed in missing. But just slightly ;)

Cut Copy

Cut Copy at Marquee Theatre [Tempe, FRI] > if you aren't at least vaguely familiar with these Aussies then you've been living under a rock and if you don't like dance and electro-popping fun then you're probably smoking the rock. These dudes have put out 3 superb studio LP's since '04 and this current tour is in promotion of their latest album Zonoscope, which I told you back in February was the illness. Do yourself a favor and get your ass out to Marquee or you'll regret it.

Richard Vission at Spanish Fly [Scottsdale, SAT] > Richard Vission or what the old school party-goers know him as Richard 'Humpty' Vission, will be hitting the decks in Old Town. I've seen Vission perhaps a dozen times over the past dozen years from Phoenix to Vegas to Los Angeles and he brings the party out wherever he drops it. He's famous for mixing the latest in almost any genre into his deep cuts. Personally, my favorite remix of his is the Rerub Edit of 'Mama's Room' by Under the Influence of Giants back in 2006. I was actually just rocking it on the train earlier today. I've never seen a DJ of this magnitude at Spanish Fly before so I'm curious how well put together it will be but he'll do his part and make everyone get down.

Let me know if you make it to any of these and how you enjoyed your night out. I'd love to hear about it. Take pics. Take some video. I'll talk to you about it when I get back from Nor*Cal.

Lollapalooza > Day 1

Lollapalooza Day 1 > was insanity to the max. Unbelievably brilliant. I might still be on the festival high but I'm pretty much never going to miss this event as long as it's around. The past 3 days were surreal. Please allow me to break down what I can recall while it's still fresh in my hungover dome piece along with some pics [a limited amount and no video yet; I'm way too exhausted for the task of that kind of editing - more photo and footage to follow later. Pinky swear].

The walk from Marriott to Grant Park was enhanced with 2 liters of home made Mimosas. We walked in with just a few minutes to spare before The Naked and Famous started their set [we were tardy, blame the beer tent]. They were superb. They closed it out with 'Young Blood' and people started fainting. Okay maybe just one person...who happened to be about 15 and wearing skinny jeans on one of the hottest days of summer here and was, according to his by-standing friends, dehydrated and 'just way too high'. Sorry, just trying to add a little dramatic effect but they really did kick it off nicely for us.

Foster the People

We opted out of a beer refill to get better position for Foster the People who played on the same Sony stage 45 minutes later. The sound was great and the energy was too. I was sweating like I'd been 10 minutes deep into Bikram Yoga class but I didn't care. Foster the Peeps frontman Mark Foster didn't either. The white button-up he was donning was soaked early on as if he came from a wet t-shirt contest he entered in Mexico. But he rocked it hard the whole time. 'Hustling' and the obvious crowd fav 'Pumped Up Kicks' did it for me. I like this band 10 times more now.

Beer/potty break time. Pretty reasonable lines on Friday averaging about 2 and 4 heads long, respectively. Not that there weren't a lot of people [this was a massive crowd] but the event was planned proper and concert etiquette seemed to be highly regarded [I'm working on a post dedicated to concert etiquette that I plan on prioritizing after encountering some cardinal sins this weekend so please be on the lookout].

The Kills

We made our way to the Bud Light stage  for The Kills. For the front half of the set I hung back at the lawn where most people were sitting so I could eat a Ron Jeremy sized bratwurst and encourage my legs to be strong. There would be no more sitting as the aggressive festival maneuvering would begin shortly. I moved up front for the back half of The Kills. They killed it. Indie garage noise triumphed.

Next up was A Perfect Circle at the Music Unlimited stage on the opposite end of the park literally a mile away. We got there just in time to hear Maynard covering 'Imagine' by John Lennon. A nice opener. In pretty good position stage left and 50 feet back I noticed a familiar face on guitar. It was James Iha from Smashing Pumpkins. I never knew he was in the band too. Obviously I don't follow this supergroup that closely. Maynard is a weird dude. I've never seen a frontman sing from the back of the stage and on the side. His strange body movements and crazy facial expressions really tripped me out. I had to leave. The band is really talented but I just wasn't feeling that type of music at that point in time. I needed to move. I needed to dance.

A mad dash to the Perry's tent for the last 20 minutes of Skrillex and first 20 of Afrojack. Great decision. Nailed it. They did too. They were electric. Most of the Lollapalooza's electronic acts went down in the Perry's tent. Lots of BPM and booming bass were pretty standard in the Perry's tent. Lots of sweaty adolescents with dilated pupils were also standard.

Crystal Castles

Back over to the Sony stage for Crystal Castles, one of the bands I was most eager to see this weekend. They didn't disappoint. The duo mixed a ton of the old stuff with the new and had us spectators dancing our asses off. I might love Alice Glass, even more than before. Experiencing her synthetically manipulated and emotional charged vocals firsthand brought my fascination to an entirely new level. I loved it when Ethan hit the kill switch and left 'Celestica' up to her. She was all over the place dancing, convulsing and even making her way into the crowd. I used to like the Robert Smith version of 'Not in Love' better than the album version but now I think I'm back to Alice. I really cannot wait to see Crystal Castles again. It might warrant a road trip.

Muse started right on time immediately after back at the Music Unlimited stage. I've never seen such a crazily engaged army of rockers like the one I enlisted in during their performance of 'Uprising'. They had the lyrics dancing on each screen during the hook and the crowd chanted them in unison at surreal decibels. The graphics and lighting were the most superb I've ever seen at a live show. Some of the best live performance DVD's I've seen even rival what I saw in real time so kudos to the man behind that. I jetted after the first 45 minutes to check back into Perry's so I think I missed one of my favorite tracks from The Resistance, 'Undisclosed Desires' [I'm pretty sure they got to that one].

Skrillex

I didn't want to leave but I knew Girl Talk had to be going off back at the tent and he was in  a major way. Standard Girl Talk. The Perry's tent was bouncing at it's hardest all day. He spun it out of control with some old school with some new illness. When we made our way inside he dropped Three 6 Mafia 'Stay Fly' over Daft Punk 'Around the World' then followed with D-12 'Purple Pills' vs. Katy Perry 'Last Friday Night'. He really has a way of reviving tracks that seemingly head toward the vault and in such intricate fashion. It's a tough call but this set was better than the last time I saw him live. He did set it off at the Marquee Theatre in Tempe but he used an extraordinary energy and fed himself phat off of it.

Muse

When Girl Talk wrapped up there were still about 15 minutes left of Muse so we moseyed back yonder to the main stage. We only made it as far as the back of the crowd's thickness before we decided that muscling through the resistance again would be too tall an order. It was a spectacular sight though. Seeing the crowd we were in just an hour earlier from just outside it made me realize just what an event it was. Everyone immersed in what was ensuing had been brought together for a shared passion for music. Live music. Real music. Performed art that is unique to that point in time and to each ear of the beholder. It was a great end to a day at arguably the best festival in the country and it was only the end of day 1.

Lollapalooza > 11 reasons to be AMPED

Lollapalooza 2011 > it's the 20th anniversary of the festival and Grant Park in Chicago will be the madness this weekend. Aside from my love for live music and in extreme variety such as this circus, I wanted to share some of the reasons why I've been so anxious to celebrate. A 'Top 10' seems too traditional though so, in no particular order, here's 11 reasons; that's one more than 10, like what Spinal Tap's amps go to.

Lollapalooza

Chicago is a great city > it's always a fun trip to the windy city. Good people. Good food. Good drinks. Good times! Add some musicus festivus into the mix and it's sure to be great. I can hardly keep up drinking in the midwest on a normal weekend getaway. I really hope I survive 5 days with this bunch.

Eminem on Saturday > the only time I've ever seen Em on stage was Warped '99 when the tour used to kick off in Phoenix. The Slim Shady LP had recently been released and Marshall Mathers' only claim to fame was a gimmicky 'My Name Is' track which I wasn't particularly fond of. For at least that show, he was plugged into the Warped lineup in place of Cypress Hill. It wasn't a pleasant surprise for nearly everyone at the show and when he got on stage with Proof he was welcomed with boos, negative chants, flying bottles and garbage. He earned my respect during 'Just Don't Give a Fuck' when he swatted an empty water bottle that came at him and flipped off the person he saw throw it, all without even missing a beat and spitting his filthy flow. The boos eventually softened and more and more heads nodded. A dozen years later Slim Shady is still one of my favorite hip-hop artists ever.

Beer > and lots of it. Cheers.

Crystal Castles on Friday > having frustratingly botched every opportunity to see them up close and personal over the past 3 years will make this Friday a very memorable first time. Finally.

Foo Fighters on Sunday > I'm a Foo virgin too and I'm really excited for Dave Grohl and company to take my v-card. I've waited everlong.

Flogging Molly on Sunday > most of the times I've seen this band play have been in Tempe or Mesa and on St. Patrick's Day. It'll be interesting to see them perform a daytime show as a non-headlining act and not in front of a sea of green beers. They put on a great show and something about their music turns everyone Irishly energetic.

Beating the heat > it's supposed to be 110 degrees in Phoenix this weekend and 81 in Chicago. This is definitely an edge Chicago will always have this time of year.

Deadmau5 on Sunday > not sure how this dude performs with that mau5 head on. I thought Daft Punk had some inconvenient performance garb but this technological mask takes it to a whole new level. I've been anxious to see Deadmau5 drop it since 2007 so I hope this rodent drops it hard.

Festival girls > I wish they all could be Lollapalooza girls. I love them. They are fun. They automatically earn a point for that shared love of music [I'll share what other attributes qualify for bonus points in another post sometime later].

Girl Talk on Friday > this guy's mixing style is nothing new but the level of intricacy he samples for mashing it up is unbelievably impressive. His show at Marquee in Tempe earlier this year probably makes my Top 5 in 2011 so far and I hope he outdoes himself tomorrow night. I just want to dance!

Being on the launchpad > there are a lot of artists I've always wanted to see do well and this may just be the stage that gives them the boost for some well deserved attention . To name a few: The Kills, Beirut, Arctic Monkeys, Lykke Li, Friendly Fires. Hopefully the opportunity to showcase how superb they are works out well for them. I got into The Naked and Famous and Foster the People recently too and I think their talent warrants some extra attention.

Hope to see you at Lolla! Holla if you see me. I'll be the dude with a lime green fanny pack dancing, Tweeting and double-fisting simultaneously.
