Dragonette >> Fixin To Thrill in Tempe with The Presets

Dragonette >> is finally making a return back to Tempe and light a fire in your new shoes. The trio hailing from Toronto will co-headline a Monday night show also featuring The Presets to kick off Memorial week with some funky electro-pop and the sexy Martina on the mic at Marquee Theatre.

DragonetteSince 2007 Dragonette has increasingly peaked my interest having infiltrated some of my most beloved Pandora stations from The Sounds to CSS, who are 2 of my favorite bands also featuring sexy, multi-talented frontwomen. If you've never heard 'I Get Around' or 'Pick Up The Phone' then do yourself and favor and insert these into your ears immediately. These along with many a jam from last year's Bodyparts release should be enough to convince you of their legitimacy. In recent years, their enhanced talent and collaborations with Martin Solveig ['Hello'], Kaskade and other all-star EDM artists have gotten them some much-deserved recognition and on MAY-20 the valley will have the privilege of experiencing a dance-pop party and fantastic show.

Prince >> Purple Rain in the Desert [Marquee Theatre]

Prince >> and 3rd Eye Girl took stage in Tempe at Marquee Theatre for the 2nd consecutive night and gave the valley an epic performance at an unusually small venue for such a legendary caliber artist. Even in his mid-50's the iconic symbol still got down to the max, demonstrating his powerful range in voice, guitar prowess and tickling the ivories to start and end the show. He even got down nasty on bass a few times proving he could do anything the accompanying trio of sexy females could do and probably better.

Prince >> Marquee Theatre

As Marquee's new red curtains opened, his grace opened with 'The Breakdown' on piano and behind a translucent wall that projected only his silhouette. Then Prince busted out his beloved electric guitar and performed a half-tempo version of 'Let's Go Crazy' behind an array of blinking, blinding lights that could have put the crowd of fossils into seizures. Though most of those in attendance were probably 20-30 years my senior, they were just as energetic and fun as those at typical shows I go to - except instead of shuffling, moshing or bepop-ing they did the bump and such with much more flailing limbs. Propers to them going crazy for the entire 2-hour performance that also included a double-encore.

Prince followed with a few more of his gems and over the next 30 minutes or so several covers like 'Play That Funky Music' and 'Thank You' which everyone around me sang the wrong words to. The dude from Sly & The Family Stone played and sang alongside Prince for that too. Pretty cool to bring up the creator of that song.

Then Prince dove into a medley of 8 or 10 greats that included 'When Doves Cry', 'Nasty Girl' and 'I Would Die 4 U'. Sadly, this mix did not include 'Raspberry Beret' or 'Little Red Corvette'. Those are definitely 2 of my favorites but his greatness' set list was still put together quite nicely and the medley did end with 'The Most Beautiful Girl In The World' which was super random and I really liked for some reason.

Prince got back on the piano to close out with an extended version of 'Purple Rain' which was also sung by the entire audience at a zillion decibels. The standard encore ensued with a not-so-standard cover of 'Let's Go' by The Cars. Totally badass to sing 'I love the nightlife, baby!' with his royal highness at the top of our lungs. He then told us how much he loved us but not as much as his guitar and and at that point he busted into a song totally dedicated to his guitar. Then the curtains closed and the house lights came on but another encore ensued.

I'm pretty pleased to have been a mere 15 feet away from such a talented and iconic specimen of a man who seemingly has not aged after over 3 decades of magic. That's a bucket list completion for sure. Sorry I have no pics or videos for this event. There were threats of castration and death by firing squad if we even looked at our phones. Use your imagination and it's completely okay to add a unicorn, Sheila E and some pancakes into this performance if you like.

Crystal Castles >> Intimate Alice Practice in Tempe [Marquee Theatre]

Crystal Castles >> came to Tempe and conquered Marquee Theatre just as anticipated. It was a sold out crowd comprised of a wide array of eclectic peeps but all fellow electro heads at heart and there to see Alice Glass and Ethan Kath absolutely crush it.

Crystal Castles >> Marquee Theatre

I'm pretty sure this was my favorite show of 2013 thus far. There have been at least 20 just this year on top of a few festivals as well but Wednesday was the most powerful. It's not that often I dance my ass off uncontrollably, ecstatically, drenched in sweat, in the middle of the week and without a drop of vodka. This performance not only bested a stellar one at Lollapalooza 2011 but definitely lived up to a highly anticipated follow-up nearly 2 years later. Speaking of Lolla, Crystal Castles are back on the bill this year and so is The Cure. So what? My guess is Robert Smith will get on the mic for a 'Not In Love' remix. But shhhhh. This is how rumors start.

The setlist featured a nice balance between all 3 of CC's albums with a little lean on the November release III. One of my favorite tracks off said LP is 'Insulin' which they played for just 1 minute and 47 seconds, precisely how long that song actually is. I really wish it was longer. Like 3 minutes longer. I get lost in the hornet buzz anthem style every time and Alice's muffled, emotionally charged vocals just kill me. But I still got lost in that rendition nonetheless so much thanks to the now-blonde Miss Glass for taking me into that trance again and this time from 20 feet away.

The olloclip is a quick-connect lens solution for the iPhone – now available for the iPhone 5.

Crystal Castles will return to the desert again this October when the open for Depeche Mode at Desert Sky Pavilion and should be my 3rd or 4th time seeing them in 2013. Can't fucking wait for another dose!

Krewella >> Killin It in Scottsdale [Wild Knight]

Krewella >> came into AZ last weekend for a double-dose desert set starting in Tucson and capping off the evening in Scottsdale, where they were fuckin Killin It. Predator. Rapture. Killin It.

Krewella >> Wild Knight

Tranzit got the jam-packed Old Town crowd warmed up with some super sick crunchy electro. I swear to Jebus he gets 10 times more dope every time I see him drop it and I'm pleased to see that this is going to be a huge year for him.

Krewella is already having a monster 2013 as well. It was only a year ago when the Chicago-based krew flew onto my radar thanks to some nasty collabs with some of my favorite artists, namely Adventure Club, and now they're headlining festivals like Ultra in Miami. This year they are like Derek Zoolander's friends smoking a cig after a gasoline fight - THEY ARE BLOWING THE FUCK UP! See what I did there.

Anyway, it was 12:30 sharp when Rain Main strolled on up to the booth rocking the signature diagonal back 5150 and out followed Yasmine and Jahan donning black skinnies and shredded tanks. Jahan was rep-ing the Windy City proper with her Bulls hat sideways too. I love their style and if you know me you know that my dome is also wealthy with New Era caps.

The trio eased into the set mashing up some international flavor throwbacks in 'The Night Out' and such but it was about 45 minutes in when shit just turned bananas. The juicy beats started to pop harder and their self-produced tracks got laid down. I was looking forward to the vocals to go down live but the only use of the mic was Yasmine telling us to put our hands up. Oh well, the crowd singing every damn word of 'Come & Get It', 'Killin It' and 'Alive' would have superseded them anyway I guess.

I love this krew! They are so much fun and cannot wait to see them again. I just might have to get on their tour circuit because 'I Can't Control Myself'!

Give Up >> The Postal Service Mailed + YACHT Sailed into Phoenix [Comerica Theatre]

YACHT >> set sail back to Phoenix last week opening up a show celebrating the 10-year anniversary of The Postal Service debut and only full length studio release Give Up.

YACHT >> Comerica Theatre

The show was a sellout but you wouldn't know it from the crowd that showed up on time when YACHT took stage. There was only about 50 people in the pit, which is roughly 1% of the venue's total capacity. Perhaps YACHT brought the LA Lakers fan-syndrome with them because it was jam-packed in the second half and the audience was certainly ready to party.

Jona and Claire of YACHT performed really well as expected but I was bummed they didn't have much of a crowd to feed off of. I was expecting really big things on a big stage but what we got, and to no fault of YACHT, was probably great footage for their upcoming show Support which brings to light the craziness of being an opening act. Comerica only gave them 40 minutes to play but they optimized the shit out of that short window playing all the greats from Shangri-La and their newest jam 'Second Summer'.

The Postal Service >> Comerica Theatre

By the time Ben Gibbard and the balance of The Postal Service took stage, Comerica Theatre definitely looked like what a sellout crowd looks like. It's crazy to think that Give Up is 10 years old now but it certainly is. I checked. Online. That album was ahead of its time and this year its staying power warranted an anniversary tour along with several festival headlines in 2013.

I was present for pretty much their entire set during the first weekend at Coachella but thanks to vodka and friends I barely remember anything. Thus, I'm mega pleased to have witnessed an epic performance and album rendition with a clear mind and only clear H20 down the hatch. Looking forward to seeing this super group again at Lollapalooza in Chicago though that will also likely be Blackout City in the Windy City.

Eric Prydz >> Saturday in Tempe

Wet Electric 2013 >> in Phoenix is going down this Saturday and it's happening up at Big Surf waterpark in Tempe. The AZ pool party has evolved once again thanks to Activated Events, bringing Eric Prydz back and to the main stage in his first return since Identity Festival last summer.

Eric Prydz >> Wet Electric

Saturday's waterpark extravaganza comes at a great time and an even better place. It's getting hot as shit right about now so water slides and waves are a great way to accompany some phat dance tracks, especially since we're still a good 6 months away from Soundwave. This is also cracking in Tempe on the east side this time so it's way more convenient. I heart Dada Life and EC Twins just as the next but last year Wet Electric was more like Westside Electric and that was a deal breaker.

Eric Prydz headlines the event this weekend less than a week after shutting down the Sahara tent at Coachella the past few Sundays. Pryda obviously hasn't had enough of the desert and we certainly haven't had enough of him. Oh and he comes correct with Sharam, Swanky Tunes and a gang of other electronic prowess so it's highly recommended you dress to get wet and dance this Saturday. Do it.
