Alabama Shakes >> Hang Loose in Phoenix [Veterans Memorial Coliseum]

Alabama Shakes >> hit up the Arizona State Fair this past Thursday for a powerful premier performance in the desert. The 1.5 hour headliner-only set in the ancient ruins of Phoenix was powerful behind frontwoman Brittany Howard's driving vocals and mean southern strumming.

Alabama Shakes >> Veterans Memorial Coliseum

The Shakes have such a great sound that I am not incredibly versed in but I absolutely adore what they bring. Ms. Howard and her Forrest Gump-ish band certainly have a unique chemistry. They appear not to know or even like each other but they were fine-tuned and sounded great throughout the show which included tons of jam-heavy offerings and erratic vocals. Brittany has so much range in those chords and can belt it to the max with so much conviction.

I'm really looking forward to encore performance this weekend at the Life Is Beautiful festival in downtown Las Vegas. It will be interesting to see what energy they bring to a massively larger crowd and how it is reciprocated. Vegas, baby. Vegas.

Holy Ghost! >> Do It Again in Phoenix [Crescent Ballroom]

Holy Ghost! >> hit Phoenix proper on Monday night at Crescent Ballroom. It was the first time the Brooklyn-based duo and Co. hit the desert southwest and the long-awaited show was fucking illness to the max.

Holy Ghost! >> Crescent Ballroom

Who doesn't love some fun synthetic pop in the face? Those who are fellow club members assembled at the staple intimate venue downtown to get their dance on and another treat was in store in Midnight Magic opening which was super disco mega funk I have been wanting to see for a while as well. It was a pleasant surprise to walk in and see that name on stage signage.

For me the premier Holy Ghost! show in AZ was everything I expected. They brought a crisp performance and all of my favorite tracks scattered throughout the setlist including 'Do It Again', 'It's Not Over' and 'Wait And See'. If my knee wasn't being a dick I would have been dancing the entire evening but I guess that's what I get for running 5 miles a hour before the show.

I'll try to update this post with some rad video of the aforementioned fave songs if I can figure out why YouTube doesn't like me tonight. See you at Alabama Shakes this Thursday!

AFI >> A Fire Inside Tempe [Marquee Theatre]

AFI >> came back to Tempe to play Marquee Theatre on Sunday evening and it was a magnificent performance once again by Davey Havok and company. It has been almost 3 years since the band has performed in the desert and they came back to the very spot they last played to celebrate the upcoming release of their new album, Burials, which drops this Tuesday.

AFI >> Marquee Theatre

I previously mentioned Burials was the most highly anticipated album to drop in October and expected this tour to feature mostly songs from this release but I was dead wrong. AFI actually only performed 'I Hope You Suffer' which is the LP's first single.

I don't mean I'm glad they played limited new stuff because I haven't listened to the album yet, more so I'm ecstatic they played mostly classic shit from the last 15 years and performed with undeniable gusto, brilliance and perhaps newfound youth. Davey has gotten older but his voice is still stellar and his acrobatic stage persona still persists burning A Fire Inside.

Half the songs came from either Sing The Sorrow or DECEMBERUNDERGROUND which are by far the best albums in my opinion, though I do love The Art Of Drowning mainly because 'Days Of The Phoenix' and 'Wester' are fucking legit.

I love that after the main set they came back out to encore with a super sick cover of 'Just Like Heaven' by The Cure. I've never heard AFI cover anything before and how fitting is it that they brilliantly paid homage to the king of emos with that masterful rendition. I hope it's not another 3 years before they return because I'm probably going to want to experience Burials alive.

Setlist: The Leaving Song Pt. II * Girl's Not Grey * I Hope You Suffer * Wester * Love Like Winter * Ever And A Day * 17 Crimes * File 13 * The Leaving Song * Beautiful Thieves * Kill Caustic * Bleed Black * Miss Murder * The Days Of The Phoenix * God Called In Sick Today * ENCORE: Just Like Heaven * Dancing Through Sunday * Silver And Cold

Austin City Limits >> Why ACL is the Best in the Fest

Austin City Limits >> just became my new favorite music festival. It's possible I may still be on the standard post-festival high but that is to be expected or something is wrong, right?

Austin City Limits 2013

Well, now that I've been back home for a week and back into my rhythm of life I can reflect and truly assess. ACL is the best music festival in the country and here is why:

Austin is THE SHIT >> let's just start with ACL being an excuse to visit one of the most fun cities in the world on top of being incredibly music-savvy inside and out. I'm sure you've heard of what fun 6th Street is on both the 'West 6th' and 'Dirty 6th'. On top of that the capitol city has a ton of great places to eat, shop and check out live music practically everywhere. It has it's own 'weird' style, attitude and vibe totally different from the rest of the state and you'll certainly want to mess with this part of Texas.

After Party >> piling onto the aforesaid great places to go before and after the festival there are very unique after parties in celebration of the esteemed gala now in its 14th year. It pops almost everywhere and each place is unique in its own way. My favorite post-fest party was at some huge house converted into a venue to accommodate a few hundred peeps inside and out. Inside on the second floor Walk The Moon and Nabiha took stage with a DJ set by Penguin Prison before, between and after. It felt like high school all over again and someone you didn't know's parents with the awesome house just left town so your band friends set up a gig and everyone joined forces to rage and wreck shit!

Zilker Park Terrain >> okay this is the least cool reason to top the list but it's absolutely a lifesaver and the previously mentioned can hardly be enjoyed otherwise. The festival grounds are really big but not too big and the soft grass throughout is flat all the way across the park. What does this mean? It means your legs are not sore like post-marathon status and you're not aching to get to your hotel room bed as soon as the festival ends. I love Lollapalooza and Outside Lands but speed-walking a mile between stages at Grant Park and hiking up and down hills at Golden Gate Park is exhausting in itself for 3 days let alone making it out after to enjoy the great cities of Chicago and San Francisco. ACL allows for your phone to be the only one low on juice.

Full Bars For Reals >> speaking of phones, reception and connection are huge, right? I mean, how the fuck did we ever manage to meet up with friends and not get lost in thousands upon thousands of fellow festival goers prior to mobile phones? Well, now we have that privilage but what good are they if they don't fucking work inside? I had no problem connecting, Tweeting, posting, texting, etcetera-ing the entire duration of ACL. I got full bars of service at many other festivals but it was all fools gold as the texts and what nots don't actually go through until the bulk of the crowd dissipates.

*Weather?* >> okay I may have brought the perfect weather with me from the desert because it was about 80 all weekend with just a few friendly clouds and very manageable humidity. I am aware this is unique because my previous trips to Austin were muggy as balls and the locals tell me ACL is known for getting rain at least 1 of the days each year. I've seen plenty of mud-pics and saw today that Day 3 of Weekend 2 at ACL was canceled because of flooding. Hence, the *asterisk* okay?

If you're going to be selective about which music festivals to go to in the upcoming years, definitely take heed to this word. I sincerely enjoy all the festivals I attend but that's not to say they are perfect. ACL is damn near it though. Amen.

Daughter >> Human Love in San Francisco [The Fillmore]

Daughter >> The lights dimmed and Elena floated on stage, shoulders hunched forward with a mousy walk.  Her shy, fragile voice said something into the mic that I am sure everyone in the building didn't understand but still knew it was more adorable than kittens and puppies napping on a pony. Nobody minded they couldn't understand her except for the jagaloon behind me who shouted 'We can’t understand you!' Really, guy? Shut the fuck up.

Daughter >> The Fillmore

The Fillmore was packed as Daughter crooned us her their melodic songs; yet there was an intimacy and a romance that made it seem like we are all just spying  on Elena and her bandmates playing songs for each other in her bedroom. Her awkwardness and discomfort in between songs was obvious, which of course made everyone fall in love with her even that much more.

As the crowd professed their feelings openly with that guy shouts of 'I am so in love with you' and 'Marry me!', Elena would quietly mumble something then giggle like she was being told she was pretty for the first time. Considering how beautiful she is, the source of this shyness is quite intriguing. Just watch one of those weird YouTube videos where they play a song and show a slideshow of low resolution pictures and try not to end up staring into the screen with your chin resting on your palm, swooning with a goofy smile on your face and a twinkle in your eye.

Sonos Wireless Music Player

During the songs, the audience was drop dead silent, as if we all agreed to be pin drop quiet so we could hear every nuance of each perfectly executed note as her angelic voice carried by powerful lyrics melted over us. One could argue that with Daughter, the lyrics come first as they are some of the most striking and poignant phrases I have heard, especially in this age of call and response party songs. I had to make sure not to pay to close attention to the words because if I did I might have ended up balling my eyes out. Just think of all the bands out I would miss out on because The Fillmore banned 'that weird Asian lady with really short hair and glasses that always comes to shows crying hysterically'. I’m not a lady…I’m a man…a man with feelings!

The room swayed from side to side in rhythm with the drums. They were tom-heavy, like Japanese Taiko drumming [that kind with a hundred guys in diapers], and alternated between Velvet Underground-esque tempos and very dance-able upbeats. The glass-like beauty of Elena’s voice was complimented by Igor’s eerie guitar sounds, smothered in rich effects. He would often use a violin bow to draw out painfully long melodic tones drenched in reverb and delay, sounding somewhere between love songs amongst whales and the harrowing call of Cthulu - the ancient one who dwells in the sea - all cohesively bound by a bass line that your ass could not ignore.

Daughter isn't for everyone, especially if you have the words 'three', 'doors' or 'down' in your top bands list.  But they also aren't only for girls with Sylvia Plath quotes tattooed on the tops of their feet. Daughter’s ability to blend gripping, emotion-heavy lyrics with Elena’s perfect voice and a back beat that gets you on your feet makes them one of the most compelling groups we have today. Even if you like songs contain any references to 'Kryptoniiiiite', listen to their cover of Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky”, surely even you can see how incredible that is.

Before I go to cheer myself up by eating a pint of Häagen-Dazs in my underwear while watching all those Mama’s Family reruns I have, I will leave you with depressing Daughter lyrics.

I should go now quietly

For my bones have found a place

To lie down and sleep

Where all my layers can become reeds

All my limbs can become trees

All my children can become me

What a mess I leave

To follow

Setlist: Still * Amsterdam * Love * Landfill * Winter * Candles * Shallows * Human * Smother * Tomorrow * Youth * Home * ENCORE: Get Lucky

New Releases >> October: AFI | Sleigh Bells | Panic! At The Disco | Best Coast | Arcade Fire | Fratellis | RJD2 | Katy Perry | Korn | Unknown Mortal Orchestra

October >> is in the air today, ACL is a mere 72 hours away, Fall album tours are already underway and how perfect is it that tha '1st Of Tha Month' happened to fall on a deep New Music Tuesday? Life Is Beautiful [this festival is happening this month too]. What's not to love when there's new shit dropping from Sleigh Bells, Best Coast, Arcade Fire, The Fratellis, Panic! At The Disco and a shit ton more? What else can you ask for?

AFI >> Burials

I'm getting greedy for a minute and Asking For It: we need a new album from AFI. They are one of my favorite bands in the generically categorized punk genre and have been for nearly 15 years. Since my days of being a little shithead punk teenager with a skateboard, AFI has consistently put out super banger strong albums every year or few that containing at least a handful of anthems for that particular period of my life. This has been the longest AFI drought yet and 4 years after Crash Love released comes the new album Burials.

More importantly, Davey Havok and company will be kicking off an album tour next week and many cities will hear some of the new album live and direct before Burials actually releases on the 22nd [lower left and coast beginning OCT-17]. Getting to finally see AFI live again along with 13 new tracks to melt my fucking face off is certainly an early Christmas present with A Fire Inside.

Austin City Limits >> 11 Reasons To Get Amped

ACL 2013 >> is nearly upon us at last! Deep in the heart of Texas this weekend [FRI-SUN] will take place a gala of 8 stages on the enormous southwest grasslands of Zilker Park in Austin and -  oh yeah - a monstrous lineup of legendary artists spanning 3 powerful decades of splendor. Let's get weird!! Austin weird.

Austin City Limits >> 2013 Lineup

Okay, obvi if you're reading this you can see the roster above and understand why I'm currently shitting my pants for excitement. An event that boasts the likes of Vampire Weekend, Muse, Phoenix, Passion Pit, etc. is sure to get any other music lover to do the same. But here are 11 reasons why this is going to be an epic fest.

Click here for the Best Buy Free Shipping Offers

1: The Cure >> easily one of the greatest bands of all time and not ashamed to admit I'm about to go full emo up in this in my first Robert Smith experience

2: Austin is WEIRD >> in the most rad fucking way possible and that weirdicalness should be exemplified in its own homegrown festivity

3: Depeche Mode >> another bucket list buster for me and a band that paved the way for a lot of the electro music I have always held dear to my 120 heartbeats per minute

4: 'Not In Love' >> being that Robert Smith will already be on the premises with The Cure, plus Crystal Castles will have already begun a tour with Depeche Mode, I'm excited by the mere possibility of a surprise 'Not In Love' performance on Saturday night

5: Grimes >> just got into her shit last year but her performance at Coachella this year blew my shit away and now I'm OBSESSED with this Canadian electro vixen

6: Beers >> it's a festival right? Cheers y'all

7: Arctic Monkeys >> one of my favorite performances at Lollapalooza 2011 in the pouring rain and still rocked the fuck out mudman status

8: Franz Ferdinand >> have been to several fests with Franz on the bill but have epically failed to ever make it over to the stage and catch any of their performances

9: Kaskade >> okay I've been to at least 10 Kaskade parties already but I'm excited for a few good friends to finally see him get down

10: Purity Ring >> love love love but never seen live

11: Discoveries >> this goes for big festivals in general but there's something to be said about what I can learn and be introduced to at a festival in the city of musicians not only performing but amongst us as well
