rad app > netflixation

Stream on stream away > if you don't already have a Netflix subscription this may just sell you on one. On a recent flight to L.A. I got the opportunity to explore the Netflix app that had been downloaded a month prior but never utilized.

instant queue

This free app for both iOS and Android just further justifies the already bargain value of a Netflix subscription. Now you can stream your instant queue as well as manage and add to it while on the go. Obviously, you do need to be connected to the web as you would to stream from your laptop or gaming console but mobile connectivity grows more accessible and continues to strengthen every day [my Southwest flight was equipped with free Wi-Fi in addition to Phoenix Sky Harbor and LAX airports].

I'm pleased to have a customized collection of shows and movies readily available on my phone without having to sacrifice valuable Gbytes of music. I'm also pleased to have shared my business transits with Dave Chappelle     :j Marc

tunesday 10.19 > dj hero 2

DJ Hero 2 available today > this probably belongs in a gaming category but w/ all the great artists contributing and the nature of this video game I deemed it appropriate to feature for Tunesday.

DJ Hero > Daft Punk

I'm really not that into video games, for the most part. My free time is as scarce as it is and just about everything else in life takes priority. While I do own a PlayStation 3, I bought it for all of the non-gaming functionalities [Blu-Ray, Netflix, web, etc.] and my collection of games is exactly enough to be pluralized: NBA Live 2K10 and DJ Hero. The former I've played about 5 times and the latter I just couldn't get enough of. Truth be told, for that couple of weeks it took me to beat it I was incredibly addicted to it like crack is to crack-heads or Halo is to Halo-heads, per say.

The game is an interactive music experience allowing you to perform rad mash-ups and ill DJ battles to the tune of some fantastic artists like Daft Punk, David Bowie, Z-Trip, 2Pac, Blondie, The Killers and the list goes on. Basically, it's like Guitar Hero but a bit more challenging and comprised of a wider variety of artists.

Today the follow-up is released in the US and Canada: DJ Hero 2. This time with 2 turntables and a microphone to accompany the even more extensive set lists featuring more amazing artists like Deadmau5, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Sneaky Sound System, Justice, Tiesto and much more.

I'll be picking up the bundled combo [game plus equipment] later today. It'll be a fine interactive activity for the SLOSHBALL 2010.2 and Halloween hangovers to come in the next few weeks.

Holler if you want to battle this     :j Marc

Wednesday showzen > sleigh bells

Sleigh Bells @ the clubhouse > last night Derek and Alexis, the dual New Yorkers that make up Sleigh Bells, performed their Treats album live in Tempe. The show was short but sweet - literally. The 30-minute LP equated to a 30-minute show that started an hour late in front of a sellout crowd of 600 sweaty Phoenicians. But their electro-noise performance sounded great nonetheless and like all shows at the Clubhouse it was really fun.

I forgot to charge my Flip so, unfortunately, I have no noisy video to share but we did get to meet Alexis outside of the ladies latrine so in Sleigh Bells-like fashion I end this short and sweet blurb with the evidence. Cheers     :j Marc

tunesday 10.12 > Lil Wayne & Kaskade

Today's new music is not exactly new because both artists released digital versions on iTunes 2 weeks ago. But as geeky and fresh-out-of-the-oven as I am, a loyal Zia patron I am as well who keeps it old school procuring the tangibles [I'm often ridiculed for continuing to buy CD's in this digital age but it's the music shopping experience among other things that drive this behavior].

album cover: Lil Wayne

Lil Wayne I Am Not A Human Being > this album is solid, not quite The Carter but a million times better than the Rebirth album he crapped out last year. This is 13 tracks of pre-captivity Weezy dropping raw rhymes over raw beats. While Drake is on 4 of the tracks, he spares us his idiotic flow and keeps his presence limited to vocals for the most part. Jay Sean and Nicki Minaj are also featured singing hooks on this album. Lil Weezy is always a lil witty and you can expect to double-take and smirk on several tracks like 'Gonorrhea' and 'Bill Gates'. You won't be disappointed w/ this release. Go on and get it!

Kaskade dance.love > this is another great release from one of today's best DJ's. It's a legit club mix that includes original tracks as well as re-edits of his own and other artists like Samantha James [no, not Anna Faris' character from Just Friends] and Alex Gaudino. I really like the digital LAB dub of 'Everyday' because it's a nearly decade-old tune given a modern makeover and without the weird 'I see you' inserts like in the DJ Icey Essential Mix. I think this album's instant classics are 'I'm In Love' and  'Fire In Your New Shoes' featuring Dragonette [my current fascination w/ Dragonette might have something to do w/ this]. If you are a Kaskade and/or house enthusiast, get dance.love and make it snappy.

SLOSHBALL 2010.2 > the fall classic is back

trading card > Daley Park

Day drinkers ASSEMBLE! > it's almost that time again for the semi-annual SLOSHBALL games! Mark your calendars for OCT23 at 2pm, when the desert weather makes it's official transformation to paradise and ideal conditions for some kickball and daydrinking. For those of you who haven't made it over the last 8 years, here's what's up.

Your favorite childhood sport of kickball has been given an adult touch: beers. Kegs at home plate, 2nd base and each of the dugouts. Everyone must have a cup in their hands at all times. You will be kicking, fielding, catching, throwing, stumbling, falling, etc. with that cup the entire game so it can get tricky. If you spill [you will probably spill] you will have to drink up and if you drop your cup [you may drop your cup] you are assessed a keg-stand penalty [no such a penalty].

But if you think you can get away with violating the rulebook, you're wrong. The ever hilarious Mulchcast Comedy Team will be returning for the 3rd time as our trio of umpires  with flags and whistles to call you out in the name of fun.

There are 5 outs per inning, 10 outfielders, multiples base runners at 2nd, etc. along with some other quirky kickball twists but all of those will be briefed to you on game day.

As always there will be live music, food, and beer galore. So what to wear? Whatever you want but note that the event is the weekend before Halloween so it's a good opportunity to try your costume out in the zBORED costume contest [we've seen some wild, weird, sexy and hilarious outfits since 2003 so we encourage you to have some fun w/ your garb]. Otherwise, dress for the weather and comfort and note the team colors if you wish to pledge allegiance to one team or another. There has been a rivalry brewing over the last 2 years b/t team Stanky Legg [red/black] and team Ballz Deep [blue/black], defending champs of this spring's contest.

So who will be the victor this time? Come and find out. Bring a friend, bring your dog. Hide your kids, hide your wife. There will be blood and hangovers.

Wednesday showzen > Matt and Kim

Matt and Kim @ the clubhouse > last night was a show of variety to say the least, such an interesting mix of artists and performances but pretty rad nonetheless.

Treasure Mammal kicked things off first w/ their blacklight friendly garb and on-stage bunny [no joke, there was a giant bunny alongside the entire time]. Their performance had the perfect amount of contagious energy in the lead-off spot to get us warmed up for Fang Island.

The headlining Matt and Kim did not disappoint - in fact, this show was better than last year's Third Thursday show in Scottsdale tenfold and that was what got me to be a follower. It's amazing how much a live performance can transform a perception and this duo delivers those special things you don't get in a radio edit.

This cover makes me want to hit up Euphoria for after hours. Anyone have a time machine?     :j Marc

roflmfaopmp > so iron!

Iron Mike Tyson > a few years ago a few of zBORED members were talking w/ his ironness at Mondrian Scottsdale [now Theodore] and I made a promise to Iron Mike that I would make the word 'iron' an adjective synonymous w/ all things that are good. Obviously, that promise has not yet been fulfilled. But better late than never, w/ your help I can restore Mike Tyson's faith in random socialites. Please spread the word this week and make iron a new part of your vocab, posts and tweets. Thx!

How iron is this video? Happy Friday Eve!     :j Marc
