New Music > Lil Wayne

Lil Wayne Tha Carter IV > is out today online and in stores nationwide. Weezy has been quite the busy free man - this is his 2nd studio release in less than a year [he just dropped I Am Not A Human Being last October] and he's been touring like a mad man [he was here in Phoenix last week with Rick Ross and Far East Movement, his 2nd stop in the desert in 2011].

Lil Wayne > Carter IV

Not going to lie, I love Weezy but I don't love this album. It's not bad but it's not that good. He's set a pretty high bar for himself already with past LP's [ie, any of Tha Carter's] so it's tough to top output like that but I think sticking with a more hard-hitting formula would have made this release stronger. There are too many slow-tempo tracks that are a tad too soulful and more like R&B jams. He features T-Pain, John Legend and Drake [if you know me or have followed this blog closely you know that I am farthest from being a Drake or T-Pain fan] among others which make up a quarter of the album.

Again, while the majority of Tha Carter IV is comprised of such style it's not bad, it's just not what makes us love Weezy. With the exception of a few tracks, this isn't an album you can bump at a party or even work out to. However there are some good tracks that hit hard. The outro also named 'Outro' features Bun B, Nas, Shyne and Busta Rhymes and that's probably the best track. Rick Ross appears on 'John' and the interlude has Tech N9ne [Lil Wayne should have done an entire song with him]. The last hard track is '6 Foot 7 Foot' which you've probably heard out or on the radio a million times since it's one of the 5 songs on the standard FM rotation.

Since it's only $9.99 at the store [Zia or wherever] you may as well pick it up for this cheap. Otherwise sample it up on iTunes and download the tracks I mentioned hit hard.

Wild Knight > is calling

Wild Knight in Scottsdale > has been open only a few months and has just recently started popping. While it's still pretty early in the life of an old town disco I think this one has potential to be a top spot for a while.

Wild Knight

The layout is open and the people traffic flows without any issues from what I've seen thus far. Getting a drink even at the busiest point in the evening hasn't really been a problem either because there are two decent-sized bars on opposite ends of the bar that always appear to be adequately staffed [the cute bottle chicks seem to be alert and on top of their game as well].

There is no shitter in the men's room either, just urinals. If you need to poop then GO HOME! Don't stink up the place we're partying at, rookie. No stalls eliminates the group of stupid crackheads blowing lines off the toilet paper holder for days while a dozen others are trying to piss. It also eliminates girls coming in to bypass their own line who take 5 minutes longer to pee than dudes.

DJ Noah Wylie

Finally, the music is rock solid. I've only been on Saturday nights but that is when DJ Noah Wylie spins it and he is one of my favorites here in the valley. You've probably heard his sickness at W, Narcisse, Smashboxx or other hot spots around the east side. If not, do yourself a favor and come out to Wild Knight tonight. The music will be dope, the air conditioning will be on full blast and the zB Party Posse will be out celebrating Matt Black's birfday. Do it.

Blink-182 > video premiere

Blink-182 'Up All Night' > today Mark, Tom and Travis premiered the video for their latest single off their upcoming studio release Neighborhoods, which will be out 9.27.11. It's nice to have back the trio that many of us grew up listening to. I'm pretty excited to see them play next month at the Arizona Fall Frenzy at Tempe Beach Park with Jimmy Eat World and Matt and Kim. I've seen all of these bands play at least a few times and all are a guaranteed good time. The weather will be approaching amazing status too so bring on this show and a slew of many others. Stay tuned for my review of Neighborhoods when it drops in September and in the mean time enjoy this video from the SoCal boys flaunting some sick new pedals and the ever-rad drums of Travis.

New Music Tuesday > CSS

Cansei de Ser Sexy La Liberación > is out in the US today and those Brazilian electropoppers definitely did it well again. They've been around since 2005 but this is only their 3rd full length studio album. Their last release Donkey [really rad btw] was in 2008 so after 3 years of strictly touring the globe this LP has been really long awaited.

CSS > La Liberación

La Liberación is a very fun album. I've already listened to it 3 times today and have only had it about 5 hours. It's mad upbeat and starts off super electro, setting the tone for the rest of the 11 tracks. My 2 favorite songs are the title track 'La Liberación' which is done entirely in their native tongue [Portuguese, doy] and 'City Grrrl' which opens with some flamenco-style guitar then drops in some hard drum and synth.

The last track 'Fuck Everything' is also a really cool one. Foreign girls singing various American expletives always kills me plus it contains a hidden track that's uber-spaceman style and hopefully a foreshadowing of further electronic experimentation for the group. The first single off this release 'Hits Me Like a Rock' is solid [pun intended] and has that familiar dance pop sound like a lot of the tracks from Donkey. You can download this one from the CSS website FREE too! However, I recommend getting the entire album. It's only $9.99 on iTunes or you pick up the hard copy at Zia for the same price [my preference, you know me]. Enjoy!

Back to School > electronic music

MTC191 Electronic Music I > is going to be a fun class. It's only the first week of school and I'm already really excited for what this fall has in store. If you know me even the slightest bit then you know that I'm apeshit for music, especially the electronic form. You probably also know that I am part geek with a raging technology boner. Thus it shouldn't be difficult to fathom why I've enrolled in a course at the SCC Department of Music this semester to get synthetic sound savvy and learn the science of what pleasures my earhole the most.

Save even more on musical gear with Rebates at AMS

COURSE DESCRIPTION: An introduction to producing music with MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) and digital audio. Individual workstations consist of Mac G4 computers, Yamaha keyboard controllers, Pro Tools, Digital Performer, Reason and Native Instruments. Synthesizers, drum triggers and other MIDI controllers are also available.

Pro Tools BOOM

Today being the first day of class, we did the whole standard intro thing, syllabus walkthrough and got familiar with the Pro Tools 9 interface. I played around with the BOOM drum machine for most of the time until we got to break. Then for the lecture we dug into the basics of how sound works and the different types of waveforms. It's relatively simple to grasp the concept of sound waves at a high level but it gets much more complex further into the subtractive synthesis process in that every sound we know can be broken into collective sine waves.

Sine Wave

The theory aspect of sound alone fascinates me but the hands-on learning is far more intriguing. I can't wait to take my GarageBand-limited production talent to a much more sophisticated level and I'll be sure to share my amateur gold with you lucky peeps along the way.

[Check out these links for more info on the MTC191 course and my rad instructor, Elaine Walker.]

Eyes Set to Kill > Tempe & Scottsdale this weekend

Eyes Set to Kill at Zia Records > today at the Tempe store. Check them out if you're in the area. They're a talented group fronted by sisters Alexia and Anissa out of Tempe. I got the opportunity to interview them back in 2008 when they had just released their Reach album [totally kick-ass album btw, great for the gym]. These girls are really nice, super cute and, not to mention, really shred on guitar [Alexia] and bass [Anissa]. Alexia has some killer pipes too.

Eyes Set to Kill

I saw them do an acoustic set at the Zia in Chandler that same year and that was pretty tight. We're lucky to have a homegrown group like this continuing on successfully at the international level and still coming back to play for the home crowd [they're also playing at Martini Ranch in Scottsdale tomorrow to promote their new album White Lotus]. Again, check them out if you're in the area. They go on at 4pm and will be sticking around after to meet, greet and sign your shit. Otherwise, get after it in Old Town tomorrow night.

Outside Lands > festivus maximus

Outside Lands in San Francisco > this past weekend boasted a lineup of various amazingness similar to Lollapalooza but not quite as big. There were 5 stages at Golden Gate Park [OL] versus 8 stages at Grant Park [Lolla]. In all honesty, I was completely content with the magnitude of this festival having been in Chicago for a week prior and getting absolutely drained from the festivities. Knowing in April that I'd be going to both 3-day festivals in consecutive weekends to kick off August, I had trained for this extravaganza all summer long. Another 3-day festival of biblical proportions may have put me to rest.

Outside Lands 2011

It was a great weekend in the bay. I always love coming back home to Nor*Cal, basking in the sun and feeling the breeze only this time I would get to see  a ton of great live music from some of my favorite artists on grandiose stages. I got to see some Lolla follow-ups from Arctic Monkeys, Girl Talk, Beirut and Deadmau5. Aside from Arctic Monkeys, they all put on a better show this weekend than they did last in Chicago.

Some were simply follow-up shows for me personally like MGMT and The Roots. MGMT put on a pretty good show in Tempe back in 2007 but they really killed it this time. The Roots were better in Scottsdale last year at SoundClash. I was a little disappointed to not see Erykah Badu up on stage during 'You Got Me' knowing she was at the park performing the night before but they did get down on it nonetheless and I was definitely moving.

Others I saw were long awaited shows like The Limousines, STRFKR and Arcade Fire. Great times at The Limousines! They covered Paul Simon's 'You Can Call Me Al' during their set and finished with 'Internet Killed the Video Star'. I finally got to see STRFKR perform 'Rawnald' up close and personal. Brilliant. Arcade Fire wasn't as magnificent as other peeps have made them out to be or I'd hoped they'd be, but at that point I had just come from an hour and half of an unbelievable Deadmau5 set and since Arcade Fire headlined the show they were very last and my legs, brain and liver were just shot by then. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and will check them out again given the opportunity.

Finally, there are the new discoveries. Perhaps the best part of music festivals or any concerts for that matter are the opportunities to discover new music. Whether it's an artist completely foreign to your music savvy or a band you've heard but never gave them the chance to love them. For me that new artist was Paper Diamond. I only saw 15 minutes of his set because I had to get into position for Girl Talk at another stage but I really like how he thew it down and I now have a dozen of his tracks in my library.

As for that band I wasn't incredibly fond of before but now love it's Best Coast. The front chick had some killer vocals and plays a mean guitar. She is so rad and even kinda sexy. They went on right before sunset and watching their entire set throughout different stages in the night was like watching their rockumentary encompassing different stages in their career, thus converting me into a fan. I am now the proud owner of 21 new Best Coast tracks.

All in all, it was a spectacular weekend. Would I do it again? Abosolutely. Even following Lollapalooza again next year? Dammit! Um yeah. I'll start training for this again now I guess.
