New Videos >> Pretty Lights at Comerica Theatre

Pretty Lights >> set it off with a soulful set last night in downtown Phoenix. For whatever reason Araabmuzik didn't take stage so Derek Smith, better known as Pretty Lights, went on early and set tripped for about 2.5 hours at Comerica Theatre.

Pretty Lights >> Comerica Theatre

If you know me then you know how much I hate this venue. I won't get into that right now but I will say that this was one of the better sounding shows since the days of it being the Dodge Theatre and getting the hell out of Dodge was legit. Anyway, it was louder than shit as usual but everything was balanced. The light show was nasty too but I suppose that can be attributed to PL and his crew. This was a general admission show, a good call by the promoter and a first for me at this spot. I can appreciate the ability to dance if you want to [and leave your friends behind] or sit in the thousands of chairs if you want to be lame about it.

Pretty Lights got started quick and the set went from hard to melancholy and back several times throughout the night. He got after all of my favorite tracks from 'Sunday School' to 'Gold Coast Hustle' to 'I Know The Truth' so I was definitely pleased early on. He peaced us out and wrapped up with a new track called 'We Must Go On' which was a perfectly chill way to go out. This was a lot more fun than anything he's contributed to any of my playlists and this set was more impressive and intimate than the last time I saw him [Lollapalooza 2011].

It was a rough Wednesday morning but well worth getting down on a Tuesday night of lights and music. Enjoy the footage.

New Videos >> Digitalism at Wild Knight

Digitalism >> made their first trip to the valley on Wednesday and brought a nasty DJ set to everyone at Wild Knight in Scottsdale. They mixed in a ton of their own productions like 'Idealistic' and 'Blitz' while occasionally dropping in an eclectic ensemble of treats from other artists from Prodigy ['Smack My Bitch Up'] to M83 ['Midnight City'] and Michael Jackson ['Billie Jean'].

Digitalism >> Wild Knight

Aside from a few technical difficulties during the opener, it was a masterful set at my favorite spot in Old Town and it was uplifting to see the atypical Hump Day go-harders coming out to support zee Germans in their Scottsdale debut. Hopefully, they'll be back again this lifetime with the return snappy as EDM continues to advance and Phoenix proper salvages this artist outlet damaged from SB-1070. I'll spare the politics. Enjoy the electronic illness from Digitalism below and check out the rest on the zBORED YouTube channel.

zTALK >> Le Castle Vania

Le Castle Vania >> was back in Phoenix recently to play Identity Festival 2012, a desert summer daytime set when temperatures hit well over the triples. But the heat was no match for DJ Dylan Eiland and certainly not for any of us in the crowd raging and dancing during his entire sweat-drenching set of electronic illness. Everybody got out alive.

I got to catch up with Le Castle Vania afterward to talk about his new album, favorite festivals, world tours and this city's scorching temperatures. Here's what the ATLian had to say.

zTALK >> Le Castle Vania

MARC: How did you decide what went into this set? Do you switch it up on every leg on tour?

LE CASTLE VANIA: I have certain tracks that I just always play, like tracks that I know people always want to hear or ones that I’m just feeling right now and the rest I just go with based on the moment. Definitely today I was like ‘I don’t care how hot it is. I’m bringing it 100% for Phoenix’ and Phoenix brought it back.

MARC: Do you consider yourself more so a DJ or a producer these days?

LE CASTLE VANIA: Definitely both. I have a strong passion for producing and writing music because that’s the creative part - well, there’s a creative part to DJ-ing as well of course - but to me DJ-ing is the reward for all the hard work in the studio. You get to bring it to people and see everyone going to crazy to it, which is the greatest feeling you could have as a musician.

MARC: You’ve done a lot of mixes for some of my favorite artists like Kaskade, La Roux and Grum. What other artists influence your sound?

LE CASTLE VANIA: I really take influence from all across the board. There’s definitely that rock element in there. I came up as kind of a Rock n Roll kid. There’s some disco elements, electro, Drum n Bass, some of the darker sounds of electronic music like Daft Punk. I like so many different kinds of music I just try to fuse it all together.

MARC: Are there any artists you would like to do collaborations with in the future?

LE CASTLE VANIA: I would really like to do a song with Cedric from The Mars Volta. That would be really interesting.

MARC: What are your favorite festivals to take part in?

LE CASTLE VANIA: EDC, Ultra, a bunch of the insomniac events - which are all amazing and always a pleasure to be a part of. I did Identity festival tour last year. That was awesome.

MARC: What are your favorite spots on tour?

LE CASTLE VANIA: Australia is one of my favorite places in the world. I have such an amazing time every time I go there. I went to Bali which was really amazing, just such a beautiful, cool place. South Africa was really cool. Cape Town was a really rad experience, just getting to go there and play music. Those are some of my top spots.

MARC: What was the most surprising?

LE CASTLE VANIA: South Africa was a surprise because both shows sold out. I never thought in my life I’d go to Africa. I didn’t grow up with a lot of money so just to have that opportunity to go there was cool, but having 2 sold out shows and a really awesome party was rad. Hopefully I’ll get to hit it again before not too long. By the way, I just want to say that Phoenix is fucking hotter than Africa and that’s fucking hot.

MARC: You probably came at the worst time to stop in Phoenix.

LE CASTLE VANIA: It’s always hot in Phoenix but I’ve always played at night. One time I played at a rooftop party at night and it rained, which it never does. So of course the one time I’m playing on the roof it does. But people loved it. They just kept partying because it cooled them off. It was pretty fun.

MARC: For aspiring artists, what kinds of software out there do you think people need to know about?

LE CASTLE VANIA: It’s all about whatever works for you, whatever sound you like. There’s definitely some cool software companies out there that I work with a lot. D16, FabFilter, Native Instruments, FXpansion are all really rad stuff. Another really cool thing is Dropbox. It’s so simple but if you’re working on a track with a friend it’s really useful because you can just drop stuff in the folder, it shows up on their computer and you can just trade files that way which I’ve been doing with a bunch of different artists lately. A bunch of producers and I have been sharing sessions and samples, sound patches for different plugins. Stuff like that.

MARC: Any new productions you’re working on?

LE CASTLE VANIA: I’m just wrapping up my album. We haven’t set a release date yet but it’s really close to being finished. We’re just wrapping some of the vocals, getting some different vocals on some of the songs. We’re talking with some really cool labels about what we’re going to do.

MARC: What can we expect on this release?

LE CASTLE VANIA: I’m really viewing it as an expansion of my sound because on the album you get to make more of a journey and experiment a little more. It’s definitely going to be me and my sound but just kind of a broadening of that sound.

MARC: A final message for the interweb?

LE CASTLE VANIA: Thanks for taking the time to check me out. Hit up my website [lecastlevania.com]. There’s tons of free downloads there or SoundCloud [soundcloud.com/lecastlevania], all my tunes are up there. Just check it out and see what you think and if you like, help spread the word and help me get out there for people to hear.

New Vids >> Yeasayer + Daedelus / Strung Out + The Ataris

Surprise shows >> in the valley this week has started September off to a killer start. Yeasayer crushed Crescent Ballroom [Phoenix] on Labor Day and Strung Out got nasty at The Nile Theater [Mesa] on Wednesday.

To be fair, these weren't technically surprise shows but it was a surprise that artists like Daedelus and The Ataris opened for the headlining Yeasayer and Strung Out, respectively. They were strange but fun combos and each show was certainly superb. Furthermore, discovering that the aforementioned openers were on the bill [merely moments before game time at the venue] was a very pleasant surprise to say the least.

Yeasayer gets the MVP out of this foursome [no contest - they are unbelievably great live]. Check out the vids below. More Yeasayer footage is posted on the zBORED YouTube channel as well as more from Daedelus, Strung Out and The Ataris.

New Videos >> 311 at Mesa Amphitheatre

311 >> orchestrated another great show in the valley on Tuesday in Mesapotamia. You are well aware of my fondness of Mesa Amp in general but I'd like to also further reinforce that this never applies in August. Aside from the desert hotness, the show was the standard dopeness. The Omaha quintet has been getting 'Down' for the better part of 2 decades, very still in the game and know what's up when bringing it to Phoenix.

311 at Mesa Amp311 opened with 'Beautiful Disaster' taking stage after their Unity Tour sidekicks Slightly Stoopid. Also off Transistor, they got after 'Rub A Dub' and while this was my 12th time seeing 311 live this may have been the first time I've seen them perform this gem [that I can recall I guess]. They flipped it again with a bunch of other 'Random' tracks that I rarely hear like that subtle nugget and 'My Stony Baby'.

There was an insane drum solo by Chad in the middle of 'Applied Science' followed by the rest of the band joining him with their mobile drum sets and banging in unison. This seems to happen pretty much all the time now but it's still fun times to watch. Just once I'd like there to be a Tim solo for days then Nick, SA, P-Nut and Chad come out schredding some Mahoney madness.

I always enjoy a good 'Amber' sesh.

Out of the, say 20, songs 311 performed it was the blue album [self-titled] that got the most action. 'Random' of course, 'Purpose', 'All Mixed Up', 'Don't Stay Home' and closing with 'Down'.

It's great that every 311 show I get to gather with the seldom cronies from prep school and the era of the self-titled LP and Transistor. It's like having an American Reunion every year. I can't wait for the 'Jackolantern's Weather' and outdoor shows and festivals are in agreeable temperatures. Fall Frenzy and Soundwave are coming soon. Can't wait!

New Pics >> Identity Festival Phoenix

Identity Phoenix >> this past Sunday was the epic hotness. Seriously, it was the hottest day of the summer [or so it seemed] but the all-star lineup of some of the hottest artists in EDM kept the desert crowd moving, dancing and raging the entire time and in the brutal sunlight for most of the day. Oh, and 2 of the stages provided absolutely no shade in front of the stage. Wahhh.

But enough about the hot hot heat, the fest was pretty sick. Doctor P, Le Castle Vania and Bingo Players were just some of the slew on the bill with the headlining legend Paul Van Dyk and closer Eric Prydz. I'm super glad that Identity finally hit Phoenix but I hope future fests are held inside or during cooler weather.

I got to meet the mad cool Le Castle Vania and the mad hot Kerli after their sets. Stay tuned for my interviews with them in the upcoming weeks. Word.
