The Used >> Take Action in Tempe [Marquee Theatre]

The Used >> took it to Tempe again at Marquee Theatre this weekend. Headlining the Take Action Tour since the beginning of January, last night's stop in the desert marked the tour's 30th leg, lead singer Bert McCracken's 31st birthday and a sellout crowd that was 'definitely 1 of the top 3 loudest' according to the frontman.

The Used >> Marquee Theatre

Having just re-released Vulnerable with a second disc of bonus material last month, I assumed the evening's setlist would have featured predominantly tracks from said album. But to my pleasant surprise they balanced the love across all LP's quite well playing  songs from each throughout the show. I like Vulnerable a lot but I'm a huge fan of the self-titled release and In Love And Death so I'm glad they got to all the best from those.

Bert took stage with a lit cigarette and struck up the band to open with 'Listening' then 'The Bird And The Worm' and 'Put Me Out'. Then he let us know it was his birthday so we could sing 'Happy Birthday' to him. He did this only another 3 or 4 times throughout the show which eventually got old but Bert had a lot of other ad hoc interludes that were pretty funny like telling us that he got a BJ last night from a married chick. His wife. He's a lot funnier than I remember him being the last time at a Used show.

They closed with 'Pretty Handsome Awkward' after directing the venue to part like the Red Sea and reform into a mondo circle pit and exited stage right upon conclusion. The standard commands of an encore ensued and the predictable concession resulted in Bert thanking Tempe/Phoenix for always being one of the best crowds. With that he said they'd play the best song ever and began playing Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' then hit us with the real encore 'A Box Of Sharp Objects'. That was a pretty sick 1-2 punch to knockout a sick sick show overall.

They said they'd be back for Warped Tour. They promised. So I just might have to man up in the 195 degree Phoenix heat and get after it. Let us do this.

Manufactured Superstars >> Land on Planet Scottsdale [AXIS RADIUS]

Manufactured Superstars >> returned to the valley last night for REPUBLIC at AXIS RADIUS in Scottsdale thanks to SLE & Disco Donnie Presents who brought them here last time for the fall edition of Soundwave 2011.

Manufactured Superstars >> AXIS RADIUS

This time the funky astronaut duo Bradley Roulier and Shawn Sabo headlined the show and got the dance floor going with a ton of A-OK drops that were way out of this world. They rolled into RADIUS just before midnight donning their classic Armageddon-style spacesuits, both in orange this time. DJ Slippe was still on the decks while the superstars set up their equipment and prepared for lift off.

Manufactured Superstars took over with an intro like the Event Horizon intercom over Lionel Richie's 'All Night Long'. Then they let it drop with some mondo choppy and crunchy bass to shake the place. They started throwing out white inflatable spacemen similar to the old school MTV moonman so within minutes of the launch the crowd also had little dancing astronauts orbiting the atmosphere.

The thing that turned me into a fan is the duo's ability to integrate many genres across all decades and remix applying fresh technique. They demonstrated that all night long with dirty samples from Michael Jackson ['Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'] and The Whispers ['Rock Steady'] to Bruno Mars ['Locked Out Of Heaven'] and Rihanna ['Diamonds'].

Of course they threw down plenty of the crunchy good stuff too with Manufactured versions of Calvin Harris, Knife Party, Swanky Tunes, Porter Robinson, Showtek, etc. They even did a rendition of 'Harlem Shake' at one point but my favorite part of the night and perhaps the pinnacle of nostalgia was the break and into the Tiesto/BT ['Love Comes Again'].

It was a pretty fun night to the tune of Manufactured Superstars. Big ups to the REPUBLIC team for another great artist selection. DJ Slippe had a solid opening set too. I was never much of a fan and haven't seen him in a while but his craft as a DJ has certainly developed over the years and now as a producer. He had a dude next to him on the mic singing on 3 tracks that he produced and representing Scottsdale the duo goes by Drunk Dial. All 3 of those songs were tight but as far as the vocals, I was not incredibly impressed plus there was a ton of feedback in just those few cuts. It was only their first performance so I'll give them some credit. I'd like to see that tighten up a bit and see another product of the desert bubble and make it.

Next up in Scottsdale: Cedric Gervais [3.1] and Dave Aude [3.8]. See you up in old town.

The Used >> Take Action Tour + Vulnerable (II)

The Used >> will be in Tempe this Sunday making their return to Marquee Theatre on the Take Action Tour which also features We Came As Romans, Crown The Empire and Mindflow.

The Used >> Take Action Tour

The band is still fresh on a long leg promoting last year's album Vulnerable and its recent re-release Vulnerable (II) that includes an 2nd disc of new tracks, acoustic versions and remixes. Aside from standard shortened festival sets in Warped Tour, this is really their first opportunity to really get Vulnerable in the desert. Per my review, this release shreds to the max and there's just a high likelihood your face will melt this Sunday on Mill Avenue.

OtterBox.com: The best protection on the market.

Get after this show if you know what's loud for you. Tickets are available online through Luckyman or at the Marquee Theatre box office. See you at the show!

Video Vault >> DJ AM + Kanye West [2007]

Magic Las Vegas >> is taking place this week and what better a fit for today's Throwback Thursday videos that were taken in Sin City for the Magic, Project and Pool apparel shows back in 2007. The late, great pioneer DJ AM rocked a Diesel shindig at Playboy Club one night and Kanye West headlined a show at Aladdin's amphitheatre that also featured Gnarls Barkley and Lupe Fiasco.

DJ AM >> Playboy Club

There was a time back in the day when I was dating a Hollywood fashionista and was pretty fascinated with that side of the apparel business. Or maybe it was just getting to go to Vegas every February and August for a week to partake in all the industry's parties and tomfoolery without actually having to work in it. Either way this particular Magic week was my favorite.

Check out some of the clips from AM's set and Kanye's performance below and as always the rest are housed on the zBORED YouTube channel for your viewing pleasure. Yeah, I know the Vegas code and I fucking broke it. Get off me.

new album >> STRFKR : Miracle Mile

Starfucker Miracle Mile >> will be released this Tuesday [2.19] in the US. It's the 3rd full length studio album in the band's 6-year tenure though they've released a handful of EP's which have put them on this path to Miracle Mile.

Starfucker >> Miracle Mile

Miracle Mile follows 2011's Reptilians which was chocked full of superb electropop gems and this release doesn't disappoint with 15 new tracks that demonstrate continued growth in the band while keeping the crisp electronica sound that converted me into a huge fan.

They even mix up the tempos quite a bit throughout the album, which is something they haven't done too much in previous releases. That's not a complaint because I love all the uptempo happy tracks I'm accustomed to hearing but songs like 'Kahlil Gibran' and 'Say To You' illustrate their ability to pack a punch outside their normal delivery.

Sonos Wireless Music Player

The opening track and first single off Miracle Mile is 'While I'm Alive' and it sets the tone nicely for the rest of the album with a classic upbeat and a funky bassline. It's one of the best ones on this release along with 'Malmo'. But my favorite tracks are a pocket in the back half of the album starting with 'Atlantis' then 'Leave It All Behind' and 'I Don't Want To See'. This combo goes from modern disco to super synthetic electro then a new wave feel.

'Atlantis' has definitely been the play of this past weekend and I'm guessing it's probably the next single. Make sure you get Miracle Mile on Tuesday. Your earholes will thank you.

Steve Aoki >> Turbulence in Scottsdale [AXIS RADIUS]

Steve Aoki >> was in the house..in the muthafuckin house. He made his return to the desert last night thanks to SLE & Disco Donnie Presents and this time he hit AXIS RADIUS in Scottsdale, throwing down a filthy 2-hour set in front of a sold out crowd coated with cake and showered in champagne.

Steve Aoki >> AXIS RADIUS

The first half of Aoki's set was pretty good as he mixed 'Transcend', 'Steve Jobs' and his other classic Dim Mak productions as well as some ill remixes to stuff from Vinylmoverz, A-Trak and such. It was about an hour in when he brought out at least 3 new dope tracks that he acknowledged the freshness of but he didn't mention the tracks names. One was a really juicy yet crunchy dub style song. I'm sure those will hit SoundCloud at some point soon though.

Right in that hour in is when shit just started to get really bananas. Aoki threw out his infamous raft into the sea of electro-heads. Then with the help of some of us right above his booth he climbed up to the VIP balcony and jumped down a floor into the raft and proceeded to float along through Glow Stick Ocean. Thankfully the gogo platform was removed for this event or the boat may not have left the dock.

Let me just take a minute to give some propers to AXIS RADIUS and SLE/DDP for their support in moving EDM forward in the valley. At the front of the millenium, I was a part of this culture but it was all underground, restricted to deserts and abandoned warehouses, not respected and those on the outside associated the scene with shit other than music, fun and love. It's quite a pleasure to see how it has grown, improved and opened people up. I'm looking forward to what 2013 and beyond brings us.

Back to the disco and Steve Aoki's shenanigans where there was more champagne spraying everywhere and even getting on the techno light chandelier 50 feet above. Not only did the antics and the crowd get crazier but Aoki's track selection did too. All this chaos ensued with 'Turbulence' but I loved the remixes he did on New Order's 'Confusion' [you know the vampire club song from Blade] and The Refused's 'New Noise' which is the opening track off his debut album Pillowface And His Airplane Chronicles back in 2008. He dropped that 'Scary Bolly Dub' from Skrillex too.

Aston Shuffle warmed it up for Steve Aoki with a phat set including some pretty good remixes to Empire Of The Sun ['Walking On A Dream'], M83 ['Midnight City'] and Ellie Goulding ['Lights']. The entire night and lineup was superb and if you didn't make it out you really missed out. I mean, even Wilmer Valderrama had to come town for this event [apparently he is part of Aoki's entourage now?]. Next majors up at AXIS RADIUS: Ferry Corsten [2.16] and Manufactured Superstars [2.23]. Get after it and save the drama for Wilmer Valderrama.

New Releases >> February

February >> is representing the new album rack with some classic artists as well as some freshness.

STRFKR >> Miracle Mile

Veterans in Björk and Misfits help us celebrate the first New Music Tuesday of the month along with Coheed and Cambria's comic book soundtrack saga continuation. But it's the indie electro combo of Unknown Mortal Orchestra and STRFKR [Starfucker] that got me stupid excited for fresh music this month.

UMO's sophomore album is fittingly called II which features the single 'Swim and Sleep (Like a Shark)'. Miracle Mile is only the 3rd full length studio album from STRFKR but those release's gems plus the assload of EP's they've dropped over the years have already put them into Starfuckerdom.

Here's the complete list and deets of all the notables for February:

Björk Bastards >> 2.5

Coheed and Cambria The Aftermath: Descension >> 2.5

Misfits DEA.D. ALIVE! >> 2.5

Unknown Mortal Orchestra II >> 2.5

STRFKR Miracle Mile >> 2.19

Shout Out Louds Optica >> 2.26
