Best in SHOWz >> 2012

Wonder Showzen 2012 > was absolutely remarkable and just like every other year in live music for me this series of concerts, parties, festivals and such, each had an identity of its own. Artists have continued to develop, galas have grown and newly discovered bands have come into fruition, making all events and even the most familiar of productions a whole new experience.

Japandroids >> Sail Inn

I didn't quite get to 100 shows like I've done in each of the last several years but I confidently state that the quality of this year's collections has been the best yet.  From the valley to Cali and from here to there I experienced many an artist for the first time [Childish Gambino, Neon Indian], 13th time [311], long-awaited [Justice, Yeasayer], and some I haven't seen in nearly 10 years [Goldfinger].

This year I basked in festivals across state lines like Outside Lands, experienced local classics like Soundwave take the next step in grandioseness and even marveled  in the Identity Fest tour expansion's debut in Phoenix this year. While staples like The Clubhouse were put to rest, newer venues like Crescent Ballroom asserted their presence into the scene and old ones arose from the dead and reinvigorated from dormancy [welcome back, Nile Theater].

Net net 2012 was a superb year and once again I got to wander a music lover’s paradise. As always I had the blastest blast with my best friends, made a shit ton of new ones and even partook some of these gigs on the solo tip. It's far too difficult to decipher the best of 2012 because each were unique from the performance aspect, my variety of company and each experience was distinct for one reason or another. Thus, in lieu of choosing, I’ll salute all of the artists that took part in my phenomenal 2012  in a Flickr tribute and healthy shout-out list. Happy 2013, my friends!

Video Vault >> Mourning Maxwell

Mourning Maxwell >> is this week's Throwback Thursday feature and it's only fitting that the last #TBT of 2012 be represented by the dudes rocking the annual holiday reunion show at Yucca Tap Room this Saturday. I came across this long lost gem from MoMax last week while e-rummaging through one of many external hard drives and decided this needs to be viewable to the masses - I thought it was at some point but I have found no trace of it on the worldwide internet machine so you're welcome.

Mourning Maxwell >> Next Morning

I really love the entire Yesterday's Gone album but the single 'Next Morning' is epic because it brings back a ton of 2001 memories when this dropped. A CD release party at The Bash On Ash [RIP], a Warped Tour debut and a few plays on The Edge [106.3/100.3, RIP] set this studio release into a permanent piece of many a summer solstice soundtrack.

If you're around on Saturday, definitely come to Yucca in Tempe to check these guys out along with Slowpoke, Snakeburner and Flying Scorpion who all feature some members from all of the aforementioned. Happy holidays!

new videos >> Adventure Club at AXIS RADIUS

Adventure Club >> took it to AZ again this year and crushed it even harder this time at AXIS RADIUS in Scottsdale. The dubstep duo got the entire old town staple bumping with their crunchiest cuts  and saved us from the wrath of the evil winter desert rain.

Adventure Club >> AXIS RADIUS

The deuce from Montreal brought it for 2+ hours on the RADIUS side and both floors teemed with wobbling peeps. They dropped all their best from 'Retro City' to 'Need Your Heart' and remixed the shit out of other kings of the electro dub underworld like Knife Party where they added some other social platforms for your 'Internet Friends' to get psycho over.

I fucking love the 'Rise & Fall' cut with Krewella and they dropped that particular version early on and got me insta-pumped. It was a good, active crowd and and the chills of the night were nothing for us. We were ecstatic disco monkeys hanging off the balcony and flooding the staircases, ooh-ing and aah-ing. While their set at Soundwave was super dope this set was longer and stronger for days.

Check out some of the zoo footage below and the rest as always on the zBORED YouTube channel.

pics + vids >> Bloc Party at Marquee Theatre

Bloc Party >> came back to Tempe in a major this past Sunday. Straight out of vampire city east London the bloke party featured Kele and company and an opening set from my darling Dum Dum Girls out of LA.

Bloc Party >> Marquee Theatre

Dum Dum Girls led the night off and warmed the crowd nicely with some cool California style rock lullabies. I've always been fascinated with this hot chick quartet but never thought a Best Coast style offense like this would ever team up with Bloc Party. An interesting band to lead off but a great set nonetheless. They have a great style both musically and in their demeanor. They played 'Lord Knows' and 'Coming Down' was a nice add to the latter part of the set. I missed my favorite of their songs 'Bedroom Eyes' while in the beer line but it sounded solid. I decided that the lead singer belongs in my hot rock chicks tribute. It's settled.

The headlining Bloc Party got their set going with their Four opening track 'So He Begins To Lie' followed by the album's first single 'Octopus'. I love the way this song begins all futuristic and such. I liked it when they first dropped the video this summer and it only took their first song at Outside Lands in August to move that song into my favorites with 'Hunting For Witches' which they followed with.

Bloc Party >> Marquee Theatre, Tempe

Kele was sick - like literally sick. It was a slightly shorter show you'd expect from a headliner's first return in Four years but he was somewhat straining his voice deep into the set and apologetically moving into softer and less demanding tracks like 'Blue Light'. I can appreciate their veering away from a Four tour dominated setlist and shredding on my favorites from the early releases like 'One More Chance' and 'Banquet' then an encore sequence with 'So Here We Are', 'Flux' and of course, 'Helicopter'.

Check out some of the aforementioned faves below and as always the rest of the evening footage can be found on the zBORED YouTube channel. Cheerio.

New Videos >> Mord Fustang + Tranzit at Wild Knight

Thanksgiving weekend >> featured a feast of juicy electronic I got to stuff my face with Friday night at Wild Knight. Mord Fustang played the main dish and with some Tranzit on the side and to get the appetite going was Brett Ortiz who just got in from 2001.

Mord Fustang >> Wild Knight

Brett Ortiz got the night started with a ton from back in the day, infusing his set with 'Toca's Miracle', tracks from Robert Miles and so forth. Then Tranzit took over and absolutely tore shit up. There was a nasty remix to 'The Veldt' [SoundCloud that shit por favor] that directed me from bar to dance floor and that is when it all went to bananas. A hella choppy 'Clint Eastwood' ensued. Then tequila. Followed by a 'Glad You Came' remix. More tequila and then some air-play [if you will] as Tranzit worked the decks in his hands elevated above the table and up to dome territory.

Tranzit gets better and better every time I experience it live and this time I thought he was leagues beyond the level I last saw him. I'm excited to see what 2013 has in store from the dude who has been bubbling strong in AZ for a while.

All the way from Estonia, Mord Fustang dropped it in hard from the get go wasting no time and none of the energy Tranzit helped create just moments before. It was perfectly packed just a tad under the max with a noticeably gorgeous crowd that knew how to keep their shit together. We were just dancing machines being powered by the mondo Tallinnian electro dubstep edits of Zedd to Clockwork and even Bsharry. The best part is when he dropped my favorite of his tracks 'A New World' which was my ringtone for about 3 months last year after seeing that Weetabix cereal commercial. You know. Yeah

It was a dope shindig at Wild Knight; I am a big fan of how they put it together. If you weren't there to brown out with me in old town then have no fear, footage of the freshness was captured. Check it out below and as well as on the zBORED YouTube channel. Enjoy.

New Videos >> Grouplove at Crescent Ballroom

Grouplove >> hit Phoenix at Crescent Ballroom this week for a very fun show w/ PAPA. This was the second time this past year they've played downtown at the same venue and it was an excellent combo of 2 fantastic bands representing LA.

Grouplove >> Crescent Ballroom, Phoenix 11.15.12PAPA featured 4 dudes playing about 8 different instruments. The red-bearded lead singer also played drums and busted out the shaker on the last few songs. With their piano-driven alternative fun rock I thought they sounded similar to Jack's Mannequin or even Phantom Planet during the Jason Schwartzman days. They warmed up the sellout crowd nicely for the headlining Grouplove.

One thing I've noticed about the Crescent Ballroom house tracks between bands is that they are random as fuck. This time I heard 'Where I Wanna Be' by Shade Sheist moments before Grouplove took stage. The randomonium didn't stop there though as Grouplove got on stage in single file dancing in strobe lights galore to 'Monster' by Kanye West and company [that song reminds me of Thanksgiving since 2 years ago I listened to it about 100 times day when My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy first dropped].

Random characters in random garb? Plenty of that too. A long-haired, blonde Tom Cruise in the 80's yuppie blazer played a mean ukelele on several songs. The cute redheaded girl wore a skeleton halloween costume like Johnny and the Cobra Kai wore kicking Daniel-San's ass in Karate Kid. Oh and she wore a very colorful kimono over that [look what I'm wearing - kimono, dogg..what are you wearing?]. The bass player had some crazy long hair and an even longer beard and he dressed like a scarecrow - the one from The Wizard of Oz. He sounded English but I couldn't really tell since every time he spoke everyone else in the band kept looking at each other and cracking up so I thought they were playing a trick on us or maybe it was some sort of inside joke.

Anyway, Grouplove played every single song I've grown to love over the past year since first hearing them at Lollapalooza 2011 including 'Colours', 'Gold Coast' and 'Naked Kids', which they played during the 3-song encore after returning with an acoustic, guitar only version of 'Cruel And Beautiful World'. They closed with their mondo-popular-thanks-to-Apple-ads 'Tongue Tied'.

It was such a great show. I'll definitely check them out again the next time they roll through here which I'm sure won't be before too long since Phoenix was the 'best show of the tour'. I've shared some of the love below so check out the footage and enjoy. As always you can see these and all the rest of the videos from this show and shows past on the zBORED YouTube channel.

Rusko >> coming to Tempe

Rusko >> will make his return to Tempe on Sunday at Marquee Theatre and this time we'll see the bloke actually throw it down. His last planned appearance in May to cap Memorial Weekend at the same venue was postponed for whatever reason but this time it's on.

RuskoI've never seen a live Rusko set before but have been following him closely over the past 4 years since I first heard him remixing the shit out of everything across genres from Kid Cudi to Kid Sister. His performance could be totally different from the stuff I'm used to hearing from this brit but I'm anticipating a lot of dubbed out pop with minimal breaks and a shit ton of juicy drops.

Is it me or is Marquee hosting more and more good EDM? The movement is becoming a revolution perhaps. I'll elaborate more on that later. See you at the show this Sunday.
