Jack Garratt >> The One-Man Band in Los Angeles [The Wiltern]

Jack Garratt >> Who is this Jack Garratt fellow? Why does he have a funny accent and what’s he saying? How does he define his music? What’s up with the beard?

Jack Garratt

I may not be able to answer all these questions, but I can tell you my thoughts on this emerging artist and his performance during my fave MS MR’s second opening act.

Jack Garratt is best described as a one-man band—he’s as solo artist as you can get. Not only does he have some intense vocals, but he plays guitar, keyboard, DJs, and taps that little electric drum like he’s a two-year-old boy hitting pots and pans for the first time. It’s just him on the stage, drawing you in with wonderment as to what he’s capable of, not dissimilar to artist Chet Faker but from the other English-speaking land known as, well, England.

[related: Chet Faker >> Soul Electronica in Hollywood]

He rocks a popped baseball cap and varsity jacket like it’s his second skin. His red beard does little to lessen the strength of his voice—something that’s a cross between anger and enthusiasm. He pushes it to the limit and doesn’t hold back. There’s a possibility his diaphragm will be ejected mid-song.

His music has range. Again, he has the Chet Faker capability of slow-moving R&B-like ballads with an electric beat, to fast-paced EDM with energetic vocals, to seductively beautiful covers of Disclosure & Sam Smith’s ‘Latch’, which I can only describe as the American Idol definition of ‘making the song your own’. I can’t quite place who he is as an artist, though that’s not a bad thing. It means he’ll always keep you guessing what’s next.

LivingSocial Deals!

Hey, he’s new and he’s allowed to work on defining himself. His full album doesn’t drop until 2016, and he’s opening for major bands and making appearances on Conan. The guy has a lot of potential, and he’s already got a bit of a following—the guys next to me were basically in love. ‘I love your beard!’ ‘I love your arms!’ ‘I love you!’ ‘Ohmygodohmygod he’s so good!’ they screamed as they fanned themselves in adoration. They weren’t alone.

I’m eager to hear more. ‘Don’t you worry about it,’ as he says in his single ‘Worry’. I’m not worried—he’s got more to give.

Kylesa >> Heads Bang in Atlanta [Drunken Unicorn]

Kylesa >> On a cool autumn night, the Drunken Unicorn welcomed Kylesa to the stage. Drunken Unicorn, reminiscent of smaller punk clubs such as CBGB, is what punk/metal clubs should be. The darkness is an intimate setting great for fans.  The audience first got to bang their head to the band Cloak, who was opening the show. Kylesa gave a wonderful performance. It was an energetic fueled night for all in attendance.

MS MR >> Takes On The Fox in Oakland [Fox Theater]

MS MR >> Any trip to The Fox in Oakland is a special treat, and Friday's trip to the iconic venue was no different. MS MR

MS MR, the New York based duo consisting of lead vocalist Lizzy Plapinger and producer/keyboardist Max Hershenow brought their one of a kind sound to one of the Bay Area's most classic venues this past weekend.

The Fox is a special place and that fact did not seem lost on the band, as Lizzy addressed the crowd upon first taking the stage saying how it was one of the largest and coolest places they'd ever had the privilege of playing.

As they started to play it seemed the stage might even be a little too big for them. The 2,800 person capacity was not quite full for the start of the main act's performance. This was by no means the fault of the band but honestly probably a casualty of Hozier closing out The Greek's 2015 series just up the road in Berkeley. But the show must go on and if that also happens to mean I can get even closer to the stage without being pushed or spilled on, then rock on!

I think the size of the space and the less than capacity crowd did affect them though. The first couple songs seemed off. Not bad, by any means just a tad off, like they were trying too hard to fill the space with the music. Lizzy's energy on stage while impressive was distracting. The dance moves were too fast and erratic, not flowing with the songs and were seemingly separate and it's own performance. I relate it to a rookie pitcher or quarterback who comes out at the beginning of a game throwing heat, raging on adrenaline and just can’t hit the strike zone or open receiver. However, like any veteran they eventually settled in and found their rhythm and the crowd followed right on board. By the time they played one of my favorite songs, ’Think Of You’, they had the crowd with them and no one would've cared if there were 20 people or 20,000 in attendance, the music and Lizzy's powerful voice had turned the tide. The easy comparison vocally at least is Florence and The Machine which I am sure they are sick of and I don’t blame them. Both leading women have strong range and depth to their sound and add in that both are London born and have red hair and strong stage presence it's a logical leap. However the overall sound is much different with a younger, edgier and with more electronic sounds more reminiscent of Phantogram or STRFKR, that results in unique tunes all their own. They played those tunes for well over an hour, and they closed with an encore of their big hit ‘Hurricane’. I as well as all in attendance left very pleased patrons.

In hindsight, the small turnout might have been a good thing for both me and the band. It will give us both a good story down the road when they're playing even bigger venues and packed houses. It would shock me if this talented duo isn't all over the festival scene in 2016, but try and see them before that. Sometimes it’s nice to catch a shooting star when it's still on its way up!

ZZ Ward >> Blue Eyed Blues in Los Angeles [El Rey]

ZZ Ward >> is my new partner in crime. She just doesn’t know it yet.

Most people know her from her pissed-off girl anthems trashing ex-boyfriends and boyfriend stealers. I expected an angry bitch to come out and intimidate the shit out of me. Instead, I walked away wanting her to be my new best friend.

ZZ Ward

Coming on the stage in a remarkable ostrich feather skirt, one-sleeved black crop top, sky-high heels and signature hat, belting out ‘Put The Gun Down’, she knew how to get the crowd going within seconds. And trust me, I’ve been to many a show in Los Angeles and this is the first time I’ve actually seen the audience engaged in the performance. Was it the venue—El Rey [a first for me]? Was it because it was a Friday night and not the typical random Tuesday? Or was it because ZZ Ward is fucking awesome and her fans know what’s up? I’m leaning towards the latter, because truly this was the best crowd I’ve seen at an LA venue in regard to engagement, age, and overall coolness factor. These were my kind of people.

ZZ Ward

ZZ Ward’s music is special. She’s got a healthy mix of blues rock with her own white girl flair— blue-eyed blues, if you will. She knows how to sing passionately in that sexy raspy voice while jamming on the acoustic and switching to the harmonica between choruses. And just like that, she’s rocking out on an electric guitar, dancing across the stage and getting the crowd dancing and singing along with her. She’s both diverse and focused, even when covering Nick Jonas’ ‘Chains’ in her own bluesy way.

Expedia's Top Deals

The whole show I couldn’t help but think, ‘Man, I want to raid this chick’s closet, get cocktails with her and the girls, then peel out in a convertible sports car and knock shit over.’ She seems like she can do it all and be totally cool about it. Also, I need the number of her Pilates/yoga instructor because damn she looks amazing! Dare I say—she looks better in person than on her album cover?

ZZ Ward

I first started listening to ZZ Ward in 2014 when I heard she’d be performing at Coachella. I have a strong feeling she’ll be back in 2016, especially since her new album should be dropping by then. Based on the tracks I heard last night, she will be just the right person to fill up a late time slot.

ZZ Ward

I want to give a shout out to her bad ass band and the guy who switched out her guitars and harmonica so quickly and easily that you almost wondered when it happened. These guys seemed so cool and were clearly a good support team for Ms. Ward.

ZZ Ward

Also a special shout out to the up-and-coming The Young Wild—the first show opener—for being both adorable and having a sound that makes me want to make best friends with everybody. I can’t wait to hear more!

I guess I have to say something about Marc Scibilia as well. The sound was good, though mostly because every song sounded like another song that’s good [e.g. Rolling Stones ‘Wild Horses’ to Marc Scibilia’s ‘Wide Open Arms’]. Good guys, I think they just need to come up with some new stuff and will be on their way.

Alright ZZ, can we be friends now? I’ll drive if you bring the tunes.

Mew >> Danish Delight in Los Angeles [The Fonda Theatre]

Mew >> You know when you pay a shit ton of money to go to some fancy headliner and to make things as dramatic as possible the lights dim, the lasers go on, the music starts, and slowly but surely the man of the hour walks out singing and everyone cheers as they begin to perform?

Mew >> The Fonda

Not Mew.

On the opposite end of the performance spectrum, like a Pulp Fiction-esque adrenaline rush injected directly into your heart, Mew’s drummer hits the stage and slaps you in the face with his high energy drum solo quickly followed by guitar, bass, keyboard and vocalist who just want to get things going!

Maybe it was the Red Bull they kept chugging between songs. Maybe it’s the fact they hail from the happiest country in the world [Denmark, for all you uninformed Millennials]. Whatever it was, I liked it and it worked for them.

When you hear the name Mew  you often hear ‘what?’ in response. It’s totally normal, unless you know music and you know that these guys have been around since 1995 and are a part of the Danish indie alternative rock music scene. They have a bit of a following, which could be easily witnessed by the dude just behind me who recorded the entire show on his phone with the flash on the whole time as he sang louder than Jonas and danced his bro-ey little ass off. St. Lucia—a band I’m seriously crushing on right now—also happened to be in attendance [which, sadly, I only learned later when I checked Instagram].

LivingSocial Deals!

Their sound is what I consider good road trip music. You know, the kind that puts you in that happy and adventurous place just as the trip starts, then slows down when you’re in that spacey zone, only to come back up-tempo just as you’re starting to doze off. They hit all those spots in just the right way.

I was surprised I was able to watch the bulk of the show from the front of the stage without being bombarded by fans [aside from Super Fan behind me]. The Fonda Theatre, though, also has a great upstairs and balcony, so towards the end of the set I walked up to see the band from up top. How much I couldn’t see from down below! They had an entire movie happening on the screen behind them; a scary ass nightmare movie reminiscent of the thriller Saw, but still pretty badass.

All in all a good welcome back to the US performance after a six-year hiatus. Can we make sure it doesn’t take as long the next time, boys?

Now please go listen to ‘Satellites’ and ‘Am I Wry? No’ if you haven’t already.

Bay Area Vibez: Diversity With A View

This past weekend was the first ever Bay Area Vibez festival in Oakland. The two day urban lifestyle music festival made its home at the Middle Harbor Shoreline Park. The waterfront park is a true hidden gem and provided an aesthetically unforgettable setting for the weekend. Saturday's sunshine and Sunday's Blood moon were both back dropped by the Bay Bridge guiding one's sight line back to the silhouette of the San Francisco city skyline.

Bay Area Vibez

The lineup for each day was as diverse as the bay area itself; hip-hop, electronic and reggae artists graced each of the festivals two stages. Saturday's lineup was heavy on the reggae vibez with Rasta legends Tarrus Riley and Morgan Heritage warming it up for reggae royalty Stephen Marley and brother and headliner Damian Marley closing it down. Damian has a hardness and an edge, maybe even anger to how he delivers his songs that radiates with tremendous energy and was transcended in the crowd.

OtterBox.com: The best protection on the market.

All performances were amazing and set a very positive and mellow atmosphere with a message of love and respect that beats at the heart of all reggae music. Having seen most of these acts before, it was Saturday's non-reggae star Aloe Blacc that stole the show for me. His unique and soulful voice was a breath of fresh air in the overlaying haze of cannabis brought on by the afternoons other artists. The man can flat out sing.

Bay Area Vibez

For those unfamiliar with his work, you might recognize him as the voice of Avicii’s smash hit ‘Wake Me Up’. He actually co-wrote the original with Aviici and it appears acoustically on his most recent album Lift Your Spirit. Honestly, it's better than its electronic counterpart. Might not get your feet moving or fists pumping as hard, but the true beauty of the song and Aloe's voice really come through and it did once again when he performed it Saturday. Other songs you might recognize are ‘I Need A Dollar’ which was the theme song of HBO's How To Make It In America and more recently ‘The Man’ which was the soundtrack in a series of Beats by Dre headphone commercials. During the presser after his performance Aloe discussed his work with Sankofa.org, a non-profit founded by Harry Belafonte, that tries to shape society's culture through music to help promote social justice. It was cool to see that his soulful sound had actual soul behind it. I expect big things from Aloe Blacc on and off stage in the years to come.

Bay Area Vibez

Sunday was a more top heavy slate with most in attendance coming to see headliners Bassnectar and NAS. For me it was all about one man with ‘One Mic’, NAS. I was pretty pumped to see him just because it's not every day you get to see a hip hop legend. He blew me away. NAS is hip hop. I may still listen to the crap on the radio these days but only out of lack of options. No MC on the planet right now comes close to Nasir Jones. He's the last of a dying breed from what I consider the golden age of rap. 2Pac and Biggie are gone, Ice Cube makes Barbershop sequels, Dre makes headphones, and Jay-Z is a business man. NAS carries the torch for what's left of hip hop and it burned bright Sunday night in Oakland. His rhymes, lyrics, voice, and beats all as sharp and heavy as ever; songs that tell stories and have a message, tracks that cause thought, emotion, and action. He gives you something most rappers don't today, perspective. Whether you can relate or agree it doesn't matter, you're getting an honest and real point of view strung together by an urban poet of which the likes of we won't soon see again. He played all the hits: ‘If I Ruled The World’, ‘One Mic’, ‘Hate Me Now’, ‘NY State Of Mind’ and so many more. All classics.

Bay Area Vibez

On top of a sick musical performance, what impressed me maybe even more was how engaging he was with the crowd. He wasn't just rapping songs from his album he was putting on a performance. He came off relate-able, intelligent, funny, mature but still gangster as fuck. The whole set was choreographed beautifully. I don't mean dancing; I just mean how the show was orchestrated. His DJ, Green Lantern, was on point, actually scratching and mixing like a DJ used to. Clearly the pair has done this before as they anticipated each other's every move. Just can't say enough about QB's finest. The albums have always been great but the stage is his kingdom. Seeing him is a must next time he runs through your city.

Thanks for a great weekend, Bay Area Vibez! It was a random ass festival but it brought great acts together and a crowd from a lot of different backgrounds together in a gorgeous setting. Another instance of music being the universal language and this weekend everyone spoke fluent good vibez!
