New Music > Tropics

Tropics Parodia Flare > hits the US stores and worldwide internet machine today. It's the first full length album from the British phenom, Chris Ward. He produces, lays down his own vocals, plays drums and guitar, is skilled with the synths, all of which can be found on this release and he's only in his early 20's. Even more baffling, he recorded this entire album at home from inside a walk-in closet! But don't let the makeshift studio production fool you - the sound is sophisticated, layered brilliantly and put together in such an intricate fashion.

Tropics > Parodia Flare

His inherited music savvy and years of fine-tuning his talents really shine through on Parodia Flare. There's a variety of really unique sounds throughout this release and it's all laced into an audial euphoric form that I love the more I hear it. The hints of waves, rain, wind and other natural sounds subtly infused into lounge-like tempo remind me of some of the transitions between tracks on ATB's Movin' Melodies or Robert Miles' Dreamland except this album embraces those mesmerizing sounds, like soft trance minus the BPM.

Tropics is a good name for Chris Ward, give this album a listen and you'll hear why. You can get Parodia Flare on iTunes now for $9.99 or get the hard copy and support your local music store [Zia has it for the same price].

Cut Copy > video premiere

Cut Copy 'Blink and You'll Miss a Revolution' > the Aussies unveiled their latest video off their latest album Zonoscope today. It's the 2nd single from this release and it's the 2nd silly video this year after 'Need You Now'. This one is directed by Emile Sornin and is set in an ancient French grotto and features primates a plenty playing Cut Copy instruments and holding the beheaded band members near the microphones for the vocals. Just see for yourself so I don't have to further explain this nonsense.

Cut Copy > Blink and You'll Miss a Revolution

Today Cut Copy also kicks off their North American tour with Washed Out and Midnight Magic. According to the tour schedule it won't hit Phoenix but there is a possibility of that changing, seeing that Washed Out will be at the Crescent Ballroom in Phoenix October 15th so keep your fingers crossed.

RIP > 2Pac

15 years ago today > we lost a pioneering and arguably the most legit and poetic rappers ever. I might be a little biased being from the wild wild west having grown up with the Digital Underground sound in Nor*Cal but I really feel like Pac made a much more lasting impact on Hip-Hop and music in general than any other rapper ever will. I guess we'll see but for now let's pour some out for the late great 2Pac and pay our respects.

This is probably my favorite of his gems because it's one of his earlier songs as a solo artist that converted me into a fan for life. Thug Life. Wurd.

Sunday Night Football > #commentweeters

Sunday Funday Football > is finally back and well worth all of the celebration today brings. Now that it's 4:44pm and both the 49ers and Cardinals games are over, my friends and I can speak again as fellow football fans and watch Sunday Night Football in a civilized manner.

@marcdzb

Tonight's game will be the New York Jets hosting the Dallas Cowboys coming up shortly at 5:20pm and I'll be watching with a group of uninvested, funny fans of good football. Follow me [@marcdzb] and other weirdos Spence [@spence_diggy] and Scott [@Choronzys] on Twitter for some fun in-game commentary. There will be jokes galore, trash-talking, drinking games and monkey business for days. Feel free to join in on the convo and partake in this idiocy. I promise it will be fun, especially if you join us in the libations. Derp.

football is back > get the apps

NFL 2011 kickoff > is a mere few hours away. Finally. It was certainly a strange offseason to say the least. An offseason that was mostly a guess on when the lockout would end followed by an intensely condensed few weeks of trades, acquisitions, moves and such segueing into the pre-season.

In celebration of a new season and me being your favorite geek I've made a list of mandatory mobile apps that will get you through the season safe, sound and sane. All of these iOS apps are available for iPhone and iPod Touch and most are optimized for iPad. Don't worry, Phonies - all of these apps have an Android platform version as well. I can't speak to their quality or functionality but we can assume for the most part their Apple counterparts are pretty similar. So without further ado here are the essentials, in no particular order:

ESPN ScoreCenter > this app is on the front page of my iPhone and definitely belongs on yours if you're a fellow sports fanatic. This is the ticker in your pocket for practically real-time [seconds, if that] football scores, stats and updates from every game. You can set alerts for almost anything against your favorite teams [this app is also legit for all sports you want to follow including college] and get push notifications for the start of a game, each scoring play, quarterly scores and/or the final score. I have my 5-time champion San Francisco 49ers set in my favorite teams and since scoring in football isn't as frequent than, say basketball, I have all of the aforementioned alerts set just in case I'm at a Sunday Ticket-less venue or somewhere the stupid Cardinals game is on instead [which is most of the time]. Your favorite teams [configure this in your 'myTeams' settings] will appear first on the scoreboard of the respective sports page you're following and if you tap into the game you'll see the scoring summary and the live gamecast feature or the recap [including box score] if the game is over. This app for iPhone and iPod Touch is really robust but the iPad version is a million times better. It's my most used app on Sunday Funday and my only friend here in the desert when the Niners are playing.

ESPN ScoreCenter

Bleacher Report Team Stream > I love the b/r and this app is way rad. You can pick the sports and teams to get updates from and they're from the local gurus who can sometimes be a little biased but are deeper into the rumors and speculation than the dudes in the national studio.

Bleacher Report Team Stream

ESPN Mobile News > this app is your source for the skinny beyond the scores like Peyton Manning's surgeries, Raider fans shooting 49er fans, stupid Tweets from Arian Foster, Cedric Benson's vacation in jail, etc. Plus, if you're an ESPN Insider subscriber like yours truly then you are privileged to the rumors as they're published when you're logged in and you'll be ahead of the game to make moves early like a true insider.

Yahoo! Fantasy, ESPN FFL & CBS Sports > these apps function relatively the same and allow you to manage your fantasy football team rosters without being behind the computer. You can make make lineup adjustments if you're actually at the game, propose a trade at the sports bar or see how many points that Aaron Rodgers touchdown just got you without having to do the math 6 beers deep at 11am and still hungover from the night before. Whatever app you're using, there have been numerous updates that improve it every year so it's easier to toggle between different teams and different leagues within the same interface and there are less crashes when you're frantically checking for updates in the last 2 minutes of a game that determines your success or peril for the week.

Yahoo! Fantasy Football

Watch ESPN > this mobile magic allows you to watch whatever is being aired on a variety of ESPN channels via your device plus a 3G or Wi-Fi connection. You're still watching on a screen smaller than the ideal but it's convenient if you're in transit, the game is blacked out or whatever and still much much better than watching a scoreboard change slowly. You get access to this app if you already have these ESPN channels through your cable or satellite provider but this accessibility is pretty limited right now [though I have been seeing continuous additions to their providers since last season].

ESPN Passport > with Passport you can log the games you're at, watching or following plus check-in with who you're cheering for and add/view photos of the game action for a socially sporty experience. So maybe this doesn't necessarily belong on this football app survival guide but it is fun to use sometimes as good fodder for fun rivalry trash-talking and game memories [games go back to before you were even born!].

ESPN Passport

Cheers to a fun and long awaited football season! GO NINERS!!!

Intervention San Diego > Sidney Samson

Labor Day Weekend in sunny San Diego > where else would I be for Sunday Funday? Intervention at Hard Rock. Exactly. Over the weekend I completed my 2011 holiday-weekend-at-Intervention trifecta having gone to see Above & Beyond for Memorial Weekend and then Edward Maya for 4th of July. This time it was Sidney Samson on the decks filling in for the hospitalized Martin Solveig. Perhaps I need an intervention from Intervention but I always have fun and it's a new experience every time. The music, party and crowd at this extravaganza is just so much illness to the max.

Sidney Samson

So after some much needed sleep, a really rough workout and a marvelous massage I find myself in mint condition again at my home in the oven-hot desert and uploading some videos from the party for your enjoyment. I'm sure you had a lovely weekend wherever you went but this is what you missed out on. Even though it was only a 2-hour set, it was a killer one so big ups to DJ Sidney Samson for converting me into a fan.

deadmau5 > in Phoenix tonight

deadmau5 live and direct > tonight in downtown Phoenix is going to be a party you definitely do not want to miss. He's easily become one of my favorite artists over the last few years mainly because he drops it hard in such a variety of styles and with such brilliance. He's been able to adjust to the ever changing electronic and dance genre while still being incredibly innovative.

Deadmau5

This will be the 3rd time seeing a live deadmau5 set in a month. If you've been following me than you know he put it down in Chicago at Lollapalooza the first weekend in August then again in San Francisco for the Outside Lands music festival at Golden Gate Park. He was superb at Lolla for the 30 minutes I saw [I missed the first hour while at another stage for Foo Fighters] and he was absolutely incredible at Outside Lands [check out the video I took below]. I mean really incredible hence the no-brainer decision to get after it tonight instead of seeing my alma mater ASU Sun Devils kick off the football season across the street from my pad [btw GO DEVILS!].

Tickets for tonight's show are no longer available online but you can still call Ticketmaster [602.262.5485] or the Phoenix Convention Center [602.262.6225] to get tickets for pickup at will call.

Some other things to note for the party tonight:

  • Doors open at 6pm and the party starts at 7pm [I'm taking the lightrail up at 7:30, Tweet at me if you want to roll with]
  • There will be 2 opening acts: Excision and DJ Aero w/ Tommy Lee [yes, THE Tommy Lee from Motley Crue].  I'm guessing deadmau5 will probably go on around 9pm [an educated guess!]
  • The hall is entirely open floor - standing room only; some of you were concerned this was going to be an assigned seating sort of thing. No [how does one sit for a set like this anyway?].
  • No backpacks, large bags or purses. Ladies, clutches are clutch. Gentlemen, pockets are your friend.
  • Dress for the party. I mean, be comfortable. It's really hot outside but count on it heating up inside too with that many people dancing their faces off. I know I will be.
Get ready for an unbelievable party downtown! Happy Friday Eve!
