tele >> February premieres and returns

Television in 2013 >> continues to be a mega force in February with the return of a few more great shows on cable.

The Walking Dead Season 3

It's the shortest month of the year and the lineup is slim too but it packs quite the punch. Tuesday night Daniel Tosh and his internet machine helpers return for season 5 of Tosh.0. There will be 30 more episodes of the fruity weirdo souping the shit out of the web gems of the maniacal planet Earth. What sartorial shenanigans will be the staple of this season? My money is on jorts.

This Sunday evening Grimes and the camp of survivors are back when The Walking Dead resumes. I don't really know how I feel about AMC splitting series' seasons in half with 3 month break - it's like 2 really short seasons but it's also half the wait until the next slew of newness.  Whatevs. The important thing is one of my favorite shows is continuing on to take us into the summer.

The Walking Dead's character lineup is even stronger now that Michonne is in full effect and Lori is still dead and these two are the dopest and dumbest, respectively, characters ever. We lost T-Dog some episodes back but we gained another brotha in Tyrese who should be badass 10 times over if consistent with the comic and the character the actor played in The Wire. Happy zombie slaying!

Tosh.0 Season 5 >> TUE 2.5 [Comedy Central]

The Walking Dead Season 3b >> SUN 2.10 [AMC]

Pinback >> Good To Sea at Crescent Ballroom

Pinback >> made their return to Phoenix on Thursday night for a stop on their Information Retrieved tour. After many a performance all over Tempe over the years playing shows at Marquee Theatre, The Clubhouse, Sail Inn, etc. they have finally made their way to downtown Phoenix proper and killed the sold out show at Crescent Ballroom.

Pinback >> Crescent Ballroom

While this tour was to promote the new album, Information Retrieved tracks were plentiful but didn't dominate the setlist. Lots of classics from across all their albums like 'Boo' and 'Penelope' from Blue Screen Life, 'Fortress' from Summer in Abaddon, and of course 'Good To Sea' from Autumn Of The Seraphs. I like the new album but it's definitely not superb like the aforementioned releases.

American Musical Supply - your musical gear source

During 'Fortress', guitarist Rob gave the mic to me to sing the first hook and everyone else around me took turns to go thereafter. Then he parted the crowd like Moses and the Red Sea to sing the next verse near the people in the back and up throughout the ballroom bleachers.

A few songs later Rob took off his guitar and did the worm dance across the stage. This was the most energetic I've ever seen him in the roughly 8 times seeing Pinback. Perhaps he was a little buzzed than usual? This was the first time I've seen him use a beer holder on his mic stand as well as a cooler full of bottles on stage at his feet. Great stuff. Another great show by the San Diegans at a great venue, to be expected.

zLISTED >> Top Soundtracks

The Silver Screen >> has given way to some great soundtracks for decades. Music from the motion picture often allows artists to cut new tracks between albums and allows films to illustrate beyond the use of a score.

OtterBox.com: The best protection on the market.

In many cases soundtracks are merely music compilations but sometimes it's an opportunity for artists to show off their ability to produce to the tone of a feature film. Whatever the flavor, some soundtracks have become staples in my music collection. Here are my favorites:

Groove >> Music From And Inspired By The Motion Picture

Groove >> this film and the movie were both way ahead of it's time. The subculture of the dance scene and underground rave community finally got some love and with some great tracks to compliment it from Orbital, John Digweed, Hybrid, etc. in a high BPM mix that will make you want to get to the nearest abandoned warehouse party ASAP. Now 13 years later EDM has become pop but us original scenesters helped pave the way.

Garden State >> Zach Braff did a nice job writing, directing and starring in this solid indie flick but he also deserves some kudos for hand-picking all of the great music in it from Zero 7, Frou Frou, and Thievery Corporation to name a few. He may be a Scrub but his ear is certainly fine tuned.

Friday >> this movie is a classic and there are some mondo classic hip-hop and  old school jams throughout classic scenes during the day in the life in South Central LA to the tune of Dr. Dre, 2 Live Crew, Alkaholiks and even Craig himself - Ice Cube.

Swordfish >> besides a very memorable Halle Berry scene I thought this movie sucked. But the soundtrack is dope because it contains an eclectic array of artists from Muse to N*E*R*D to Afrika Bombaataa to Dope Smugglaz in one mix all spindled by the legendary Paul Oakenfold.

New Releases >> January

January >> 1st fell on a Tuesday this year but it wasn't a New Music Tuesday. Thus, the first new release tidings of the 2013 season arrive today kicking off a month of getting punked, popped and dropped from various artists of the sort.

Toro Y Moi >> Anything In Return

January brings us brand new albums from Say Anything, Ra Ra Riot and Local Natives. On the punk front we get albums from legends in the game 20+ years in Dropkick Murphys and Bad Religion. Tegan And Sara assemble again and Ben Harper teams up with Charlie Musselwhite for another duo release. On the solo tip Prince Sean Lennon drops Alter Egos and Toro Y Moi releases Anything In Return.

I'm most excited for Toro Y Moi's new album because it's been almost 2 years since Underneath The Pine came out. Considering how dope that release was and the time he's had to perfect this project, I'm expecting even bigger things from Anything In Return. and the tour [he's currently touring EU but kicks off the US tour here in Phoenix on JAN30 at the venue he last played in the desert, Crescent Ballroom last March].

The aforementioned artists along with some other notables' release dates are listed below. Make it a 2013 resolution to get some of these at your local records store yo. Happy listening!

Dropkick Murphys Signed And Sealed In Blood >> 1.8

Sean Lennon Alter Egos >> 1.15

Bad Religion True North >> 1.22

Ra Ra Riot Beta Love >> 1.22

Say Anything All My Friends Are Enemies: The Early Rarities >> 1.22

Toro Y Moi Anything In Return >> 1.22

Ben Harper with Charlie Musselwhite Get Up! >> 1.29

Local Natives Hummingbird >> 1.29

Tegan And Sara Heartthrob >> 1.29

vids >> Wolfgang Gartner at El Santo Cantina NYE Last Dance

Wolfgang Gartner >> had a busy transition into 2013. After a mile-high NYE set in Denver he immediately flew into the desert to cap the night and ring in the new year in Scottsdale with a super nasty set at El Santo Cantina, headlining the Last Dance party that also featured Phoenix's own Turner & Heit.

Wolfgang Gartner >> El Santo, Scottsdale

Turner & Heit set it off nicely to start the shindig. At 9-ish when we arrived to claim our table it was deader than MJ and the rumored sellout was suspect. It only took another 30 minutes before heads rolled in and 900 strong were dancing our faces off while Turner & Heit set the House on fire.

El Santo Cantina came through out of left field again with this party after bringing in legends like Paul Oakenfold and Richard Vission this past year. Now an upper scale and legit cantina [think NOT Spanish Fly] with lights and music, add Wolfgang Gartner to the repertoire and the old Jilly's has converted from a lunch spot in north Scottsdale to a hot spot in the greater Phoenix area.

Sonos Wireless Music Player

Briefly after the desert-bred T&H wrapped up their set, Wolfgang Gartner got on and threw it down for a hot minute before 2013 ball dropped. The countdown wasn't as grandiose as years past by Z-Trip and Steve Aoki but nobody gave a shit because we all just wanted to keep raging and the set to continue. It was a cold night but very warm in front of the decks.

The party was the blastest blast and since I opted out of his set at Outside Lands and he was a no-show at Identity Fest Phoenix, finally getting to see Wolfgang Gartner in the very last opportunity of 2012 was a huge bonus. It's been at least 5 years since I've spent NYE in Phoenix but here this year and seeing an artist of this caliber taking it to the desert on a big night is a big step for the scene here. I'm looking forward to more parties like this here in town and this only helps the shift to a festival destination like I've been anticipating for the past few years.

Check out some of the vids below and rest posted on the zBORED YouTube channel.

tele >> January premieres and returns

Television in 2013 >> is kicking off strong with a handful of great series returns and premieres to get excited for this month.

Portlandia >> Carrie Brownstein & Fred Armisen

David Dochovny is back in another season of Californication and seemingly back with his baby mama Karen - but I assume that will be short-lived because where's the fun in a monogamous Hank Moody?

Blake, Adam and Ders return for another season of stoners wreaking havoc in Workaholics so prepare to get weird and stay fresh. Also on Comedy Central, funny bastard Nick Kroll finally graduates to his own well-deserved sketch show after Human Giant appearances and role share in The League.

468x60 - Unpublished Rate Hotels

But what I'm most excited for is another season of Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein keeping the dream of the 90's alive in Portlandia which premieres tonight so remember to set your DVR or Mind-Fi accordingly. Ayooo river!!

Portlandia Season 3 >> FRI 1.4 [IFC]

The Burn With Jeff Ross Season 2 >> TUE 1.8 [Comedy Central]

Californication Season 6 >> SUN 1.13 [Showtime]

Kroll Show Premiere >> WED 1.16 [Comedy Central]

Workaholics Season 4 >> WED 1.16 [Comedy Central]

new videos >> Slowpoke + Mourning Maxwell

Slowpoke & MoMax >> played their annual reunion show this past Saturday at Yucca Tap Room. Similarly concentric bands in Flying Scorpion and Snake Burner sharing members opened the night and shut it down, respectively. It was a great night of throwback jams with Derek and Alex in every band on the bill. Kudos to everyone in the lineup for a great show and a free one at that.

Slowpoke >> Yucca Tap Room

Flying Scorpion hit leadoff with Alex now on drums as of the last 3 months but he can still shred a mean guitar per what we saw in what followed. That was the first time I caught an entire Flying Scorpion show and I really dug it. Look for these guys to bubble this year.

Mourning Maxwell got after it next and played a healthy dose if not all of the tracks from both Our Collective Voice and their self-titled EP. Favorites like 'Truce', 'A Poet On Payday' and 'A Million Things At Once' stirred up a lot of awesome memories from the 04-05 timetable. It was really good to hear these guys back at it again.

The headlining Slowpoke followed and started with 'Closed For Winter Session', the opening track from Yesterday's Gone. Most of the setlist was comprised of tracks from said release including 'More Than I Can Have', 'Skullz', 'Crazy Bruise', etc. Friends-slash-fans of Slowpoke since their inception filled the joint and sang along to a lot of the nostalgic tunes, especially in those that welcomed it like 'Hopeless And Hungry' and 'FUCK YOU' of course.

During their set the fellas covered Sublime 'Bad Fish', OSL 'Beer Goggles' [so seldom played Derek forgot some of the words haha] and even NOFX 'Linoleum' with Bud on the mic and Alex drumming. Fittingly, they wrapped up in normal formation with 'Next Morning' and I woke up the next morning with the most epic hangover ever.

Snakeburner capped off the night with their expected amazingness but I was pretty far gone by the middle of their set. I'm sure they finished off in a fun way as always. Please enjoy the videos from the night below and of course on the zBORED YouTube channel. Happy 2013!
