Sleigh Bells >> next Wednesday in Phoenix

Sleigh Bells >> will make their long-awaited return to the desert next Wednesday for a pre-Coachella show at Crescent Ballroom in downtown Phoenix.

Sleigh Bells

It's been roughly 4 years since the NY duo played The Clubhouse [RIP] in Tempe back shortly after their Treats album dropped. Since then, Derek and Alexis have released 2 more super crispy albums, Reign of Terror and the zB Best Albums of 2013 pick Bitter Rivals. This should be a really fun show and a great reason to get amped next Hump Day.

Crescent Ballroom is one of the best venues in the valley and it will be quite another treat to see Sleigh Bells rock it again at another intimate venue certainly made for this caliber eclectic electric tag team. Get your tickets here if you haven't already done so. Tell 'Em.

DATSIK >> Drops the Dream in San Francisco [Regency Ballroom]

DATSIK >> Music genres go through a similar cycle each time they are 'pioneered'. There is always a beginning - with someone, somewhere. The genre lives in obscurity. It cultivates a feverishly loyal but small fan base. The music sounds 'new', it is uninhibited and its sound is driven purely by what the artist/community thinks is good. At this point, the artists are just as much fans of the genre as the audience.

DATSIK >> Regency Ballroom

Then it breaks, the genre starts showing up at music festivals, you might read an article about it, college radios start playing their tracks. The next stage is hyper-popularity. They are on Rolling Stone now.  They are played in car commercials. They start playing stadiums. The genre is flooded with money, and where there is cash there are expectations. The idea of pushing boundaries and shaping a new sound makes way to selling records, downloads or concert tickets and distilling what made the music interesting into a core, then shooting that core up with steroids until it wins a Grammy.

The music purposely begins to appeal to the peak of the bell curve, the average. This cycle is accelerating. Hip-hop arguable has its roots in the late 70’s early 80’s and hit this 'shit-peak' in 1998 when Will Smith won a Grammy for 'Men in Black'. It took a good 18 years before rapping granny’s started showing up.

Grunge started popping up in the very late 80’s. It was only about 10 years before all rock bands had employed an Eddie Vedder impersonator as a front man, culminating in the suicide-inducing release of Creed’s 'My Own Prison' in 1998.

The moment I heard sub bass wobbles in the back drop of a Scion commercial, I knew it was over and I was amazed at how fast the cycle had gotten. So here is where I stand with dubstep, a genre I once loved so much. It is a genre that has now been distilled to a core of drops, wubs, and buzzer sounds seemingly randomly picked from a sound bank. Songs where in between the drops you feel nothing, you do nothing because its sucks and it's boring until the drop comes. It is a genre I never listen to anymore.

Now as hipster as that tirade made me sound, I want to be very clear about something regarding the DATSIK show. That shit was still fun as fuck. His set piece was a giant white speaker cone, in which he sat in the middle. It pulsed lasers with every thump and wobble. The tracks weren't exactly nuanced or complex. It didn't give me that what-the-fuck-is-this? feeling of excitement like the first time I heard Skream or Benga, but it didn't have to because  it made that room dance and for the entirety of DATSIK's set, the Regency Ballroom was shaking.

The hedonism of a dubstep show still shocks me. The girls were dressed in the requisite panties, tubetop and furry boots. The men were shirtless and all wearing backpacks. It was an all-ages show so god knows how old they all were. One thing was for sure, I am old as fuck now. Apparently if you’re old, you’re probably holding Molly because I was asked like 10 times. The last chick that asked me had fucking braces. Man, I was 17 in the wrong fucking era, back then I was listening to depressing shit like Underworld and Portishead and these lucky kids are on Molly, timing their make-out sessions with dubstep drops, aka the dream.

DATSIK's strong hip-hop influences seeped into his set. It was these influences I enjoyed the most, reminiscent of old DJ Shadow and scratch culture DJ’s all culminating in a dubstep rendition of RJD2’s 'Ghostwriter'. The super slowed down version of 'Tequila' had the room dancing like Pee-Wee Herman drinking sizzurp and it was a welcomed intermission until the monstrous frenetic beats started again.

His sound was overall aggressive and 'hard', a clear indication that this was actually 'brostep' that I was dancing to, the other indication being the army of 'bros' who were in the air chest bumping as the drops hit. I would probably have a hard time listening to DATSIK on headphones in my apartment. But I wasn’t in my apartment. I was here and it was loud and there was an army of youth having the time of their lives and in this setting...

DATSIK was awesome.

VIVA PHX >> The Neighbourhood + Pinback + YACHT + Nite Jewel [Downtown Phoenix]

VIVA PHX >> happened over the weekend in the heart of downtown Phoenix along with its surrounding metro subsets. In its first year the multi-genre music festival featured over 70 artists from around the world performing on 14 stages throughout the city streets. From the main stage elaborately constructed in front of Cityscape to the alleys between vintage buildings to a variety of venues spanning over a square mile, this gala is just what Phoenix has been waiting for.

VIVA PHX

The festival's turnout was great as was the totes rando crowd of hipsters, hip-hoppers, indie rockers and pop-lockers, from generations X, Y and Z yet all enjoying the presence of each other alike, trucks full of PBR and the sounds of excellent music.

Pinback >> VIVA PHX

Pinback performed on the main stage along with Kitten and The Neighbourhood. It was tough to tell whether the insanely packed crowd was there for the San Diegan duo or early positioning for THE NBHD of L.A. Whatever the reason the sea of peeps flooded 1st Street it was because of the quality talent and superb performances by said bands.

Nite Jewel >> VIVA PHX

I wasn't too familiar with Nite Jewel prior to the festival and really just stumbled upon her set as my squad positioned for YACHT inside Crescent Ballroom. After catching a hot minute of the electric diva I became an instant fan. She reminds me of Grimes the way she gets down on the synths, allures with enchanting vocals and hypnotizes with erratic movements about the stage.

[related: Grimes >> Coachella 2013]

YACHT >> VIVA PHX

YACHT crushed it too. They get more and more captivating every time I see them perform. Though it seemed to be a short set, it was the most powerful of the night. Jona migrating from instrument to instrument as well as into the crowd was fun to watch. Claire's yoga-inspired moves and vocals with attitude really are a treat too.

[related: zTALK >> YACHT: Jona & Claire]

I ended the night with some Black Carl and some damn good Indian fry bread then peaced out as the crew shut down the city.

It can be a challenge to be at 70 different places at once whilst also on the huge bill at VIVA PHX was Z-Trip and Blackalicious who I unfortunately didn't get to see but heard tore that shit up.

This was an excellent inaugural event and hopefully it only gets better. Mad propers to Stateside Presents for growing South By Stateside into a whole new beast in its own.

Hottest Chicks >> in Hard Rock invade Atlanta [The Masquerade]

Sick Puppies >> and Lacuna Coil came to The Masquerade in Atlanta this weekend for a show with Eyes Set To Kill and Cilver also on the bill. The aforementioned foursome of metal are the featured artists on this year's Hottest Chicks In Hard Rock Tour that just kicked off its eastern leg last week.

Sick Puppies >> The Masquerade

Cilver opened the show with an entertaining sound reminiscent of the old Smashing Pumpkins which the crowd responded uproariously to. The leading lady belted out emotionally charged lyrics setting up for a full concentrated vocal lead that got the rest of the band fully energized.

Next up on the Heaven stage at The Masquerade was Eyes Set to Kill, a band from Tempe, AZ created by the Rodriguez sisters, Alexia and Anissa. ESTK have a post-hardcore sound that really amped the crowd. Both Eyes Set to Kill and Cilver are immensely talented with the potential to have stellar careers.

Lacuna Coil followed as the co-headliner and The Masquerade went wild. The Italian rockers from Milan certainly know how to command the stage. Lovely dual vocals over hard hard metal is Lacuna Coil's calling card. It's like seeing a small theater musical when watching this band perform. An operatic style from the lady, Cristina Scabbia, and the gentleman, Andrea Ferro, offers a complementary vocal whilst the others back it up with loud drums, heavy guitar and driving bass.

The outstanding performance led to the floor literally shaking with a surprise new song from the long-awaited new album Broken Crown Halo which is set to release this April.  The audience adored the new single and took the enthusiasm level up a few notches throughout the Masquerade, a perfect performance to get the crowd going before Sick Puppies went on.

The headlining Sick Puppies took stage with a wild uproar afoot. It was the moment everyone had been waiting for all night. They always have a way of bringing high energy to every show and this one was no different. The Aussie band appears to have a lot of fun every time they perform, interacting with everyone in proximity. An encore was demanded by those in attendance Sick Puppies delivered the Tri-polar hit 'You're Going Down' for an astounding end to a truly astounding show.

This is the way hard rock should be performed. It was only the second night of The Hottest Chicks In Hard Rock Tour across the US so be sure check them out when they hit your city. You will not be disappointed.

Imagine Dragons + Naked and Famous >> Radioactive Young Blood in Phoenix [US Airways Center]

The Naked and Famous >> and Imagine Dragons made a stop into downtown Phoenix on their Into The Night tour. It was a monumental show a sellout crowd at US Airways Center and a display of 2 bands' popularity finally approaching to the level of their talent.

The Naked and Famous >> US Airways Center

The Naked and Famous got it going around 8 o'clock as New Zealand's Alisa Xayalith and friends took stage to perform 'A Stillness' which really threw me off at first. All the reverb in that track along with the insane amount of bass pumping in the Purple Palace made it difficult to hear the vocals so I couldn't even tell it was N&F on stage. That and Alisa is now blonde with super short hair and was rocking an outfit she may have gotten in The Matrix from Neo.

They followed that song with a more recognizable one in 'Punching In A Dream' and the soundstage seemingly had made some ad hoc adjustments which made it was clear The Naked and Famous were the ones letting loose at that moment. That same band I saw insecurely yet commandingly perform in Chicago at Lollapalooza 2011 in the middle of the first day.

[related: Lollapalooza > Day 1 ]

The level this band has evolved to in 3 short years is surprising but I'm not shocked they have this enormously deserved following. With each song came an added degree of stage exploration and before long Alisa had taken the mic off the stand to navigate the uncharted catwalk and mingle with the sea of peeps in the pit. The lighting and fog machines must have been synced with her movement too as it seemed those got put to work more and more as she moved about.

High-Quality iPod/iPhone Accessories

They closed out the set with 'Young Blood' from their debut album Passive Me, Aggressive You. This version was a lot more synth-heavy and featured a ton more distortion on guitar and it was fucking dope. I think it was a combination of those intricate enhancements and a 2014 gusto that made this rendition that much more powerful.

Imagine Dragons >> US Airways Center

Oh and Imagine Dragons performed too. They headlined actually. Not to be outdone by the preceding band, frontman Dan Reynolds used every inch of the ginormous stage as well but even optimized the stage's side ramps and railing to serenade the corners of the arena. I wasn't much a fan of Imagine Dragons prior to tonight but the hullaballoo over what I skipped at the Life Is Beautiful festival in Vegas last year and the awesome performance featuring Kendrick Lamar on SNL a few weeks ago got me increasingly curious.

[related: Life Is Beautiful >> in Downtown Las Vegas]

They are a talented bunch and Dan is the man with a powerful voice and full of energy. Some shit was a little cheesy - like the sporadic huddles in the middle of the stage and Reynolds' frequent gravitating toward that huge marching band bass drum to beat then dramatically tossing the drumsticks into the air - but overall it was a really superb performance and the start of a beautiful fanship.
