Shiny Toy Guns >> Alive In This Ghost Town of Tucson [The Rock]

TOUR ODYSSEY >> and the headlining Shiny Toy Guns kicked off its second leg of touring on Wednesday evening in Tucson. This tour also doubles as the band's III album tour which was released this past Fall and is definitely right up there in sheer amazingness.

Shiny Toy Guns >> The Rock

The show was also amazing and that's saying a lot considering how not very amazing the venue is. Perhaps I've been spoiled by the blessings of superb venues in and around Phoenix. Perhaps I just don't like crossing enemy lines and I'm that hardcore Sun Devil status. See, told you.

Anyway, why Tucson instead of Phoenix and not in addition to? According to Carah Faye of STG, this tour was to cover the B markets - which is pretty rad to share the love with smaller towns because there are starving music fans in Des Moines and Niagara Falls too you know.

Shiny Toy Guns took stage in the band's original formula. There were some additions and subtractions over the years since I last saw them in concert but Chad, Carah, Jeremy and Mikey are all back together again for the sake of their third album.

Best Selling iPod/iPhone Accessory Device!

They played the best album cuts including both singles 'Waiting Alone' and 'Fading Listening' as well as my favorites 'Somewhere To Hide', 'Speaking Japanese' and 'Carrie' which they opened with. Most of the illest from their debut release We Are Pilots were mixed in as well. 'Le Disko' came about 5 songs in followed by 'Don't Cry Out'. They closed with the singles 'Rainy Monday' and my favorite 'You Are The One'.

They even busted out their cover of 'Major Tom' midway through the night and in the midst of body movin' I was reminded of the video tape of Gale from Breaking Bad singing karaoke all by his lonesome. So when exactly does Breaking Bad come back? Hurry up! Fuck. I have mega ADD. Shiny played only the 2 singles from their sophomore release 'Season Of Poison' which is my least favorite album, mainly because the lovely Carah is was not involved, but they got to that stuff early on and over with quickly.

It was 5 years between experiencing Shiny Toy Gun performances and 4 years had passed before releasing another album. Though substantial I think those painful gaps were worth the wait. I'm looking forward to seeing them again. Hopefully they get on the bill for some festivals this year otherwise I may need to travel some unless they find 'Somewhere To Hide' from me.

Black Out The San Francisco Sun >> Sevendust + Coal Chamber + Lacuna Coil [Regency Ballroom]

Saturday night >> I find myself in the middle of the Regency Ballroom in San Francisco. It’s palatial architecture and 'John Wilkes Booth' balconies serve as a backdrop to a sea of angry young primitives thrashing their greasy hair back and forth with every strike of a power chord. I turn my head to witness a mass of black hoodies, Goth chicks in corsets, and white guys with goatees and dreads.

Sevendust >> Regency Ballroom

As Lacuna Coil’s Cristina Scabbia’s haunting voice sails over the aggressive and emotional chorus of 'Trip The Darkness' I ask myself some very important questions. How have the years since '98 turned me into such a pussy? How has my favorite instrument become a laptop? And why the fuck am I wearing khaki’s to a Sevendust concert?

I worry that they will spot me, label me a poser and an imposter. Then, as the Rottweiler vocals of Coal Chambers Dez Fafara bark 'we don’t need no water, let the motherfucker burn'  and the double bass explodes as they played 'Sway', my feet lift with every guttural guitar riff, compelling me to curl my middle and ring finger towards the heel of my palm. I raise the devil horns in the air for the first time in years and bang my head in unison with the crowd. I realize it’s not too late for me, I am not an imposter.

Coal Chamber and Lacuna Coil did there fair share to set the energy in the room to 11 before Sevendust opened with 'Decay', a track off their new album Black Out The Sun  which the tour is named after. The rest of their set was primarily all older stuff. They clearly understood that their best days may be behind them and it was clear by the crowd reaction that they were expecting some of the familiar classics as well.

Sonos Wireless Music System.

By the time the intro to 'Bitch' started to play, the collective angst and excitement of the crowd had been whipped into a frenzy. The mosh pit, which had been up to this point playful shoving and pushing, erupted into a cyclone of limbs and bodies flying and crashing into each other with reckless abandon.

Lajon Witherspoon did not disappoint. Whipping his predator like dreads around as he strangled the mic, he attacked every lyric with the soulful precision of a trained vocalist. It was always this mix of hard and heavy rock with Lajon’s clearly talented voice and focus on melody that set Sevendust apart from their contemporaries. I always said that they were the closest thing to In Living Color that people my age and younger could experience.

This concert served as a reminder, that with all the hybrids, iPhones, 808’s, ironic hair cuts and keyboard driven dance pop that we love…..we should never forget how important and cathartic it is to rock hard as fuck.

TOUR ODYSSEY >> Shiny Toy Guns + Dirty Heads

The Rock >> in Tucson will host what should be a superb event this coming Wednesday.  Shiny Toy Guns and The Dirty Heads co-headline this brilliant bill and will be performing at a classic and intimate venue right in the heart of a wild west college town.

Shiny Toy Guns >> TOUR ODYSSEY

Shiny Toy Guns recently released their long-awaited 3rd studio album fittingly titled III which was definitely worth the wait after their previous LP in 2009. It's been a minute since the band has been to the desert so I'm really looking forward to this show and the performance of their latest cuts. I really loved their debut We Are Pilots but the new release is becoming my favorite the more I listen to the crisp production and genius riff-synth combos throughout.

I've never seen The Dirty Heads in concert so it'll be fun to finally get to check them out too along with Midi Matilda and Oh No Fiasco who are also part of the lineup. PureVolume and A2IM have joined forces to create this interactive tour that encompasses an indie-technological flair so aside from the legion of artists performing, this show will be illness on the virtual tip too.

Plus everyone gets the Five Seven Music album sampler for free with purchase of their ticket to the show, which includes fresh tracks from all the tour's featured artists as well as Nico Vega. You don't want to miss this show. I'm traveling from Phoenix and into enemy territory for this shit so you have no excuses. Get after it.

Groove Cruise >> Los Angeles + Mexico + Catalina Island

Groove Cruise Fall 2013 >> sets sail from LA this September 27th and so will begin a 72-hour dance party at sea. The ultimate 3-day music festival and on water. Cruises are already tons of fun to begin with but what makes this one special is its live, onboard EDM-infused soundtrack comprised of the illest electronic artists, throwing down monster sets, international water style.

Groove Cruise 2013 >> Los Angeles + Mexico + Catalina Island

Groove Cruise voyages over the years have featured hard hitters from Deadmau5 to Benny Benassi and Dirty South. The most recent cruise through Miami-Bahamas had EC Twins, Sander Van Doorn and Nervo as well as Donald Glaude and Steve Smooth who may never actually get off the boat [seems like they are on the lineup every year].

What's cool about this festival aside from the continuum of music is the nature of the confines. When DJ's aren't on the decks doing it live, they're on the poop deck living it up with everyone else. You can catch them in their natural element in a fun environment and perhaps you can tell them to 'put your fucking hands up!' All the peeps I know who've been on board year after year have had the blastest blast ever. I've had just about enough of only hearing about it for the past 6 years so this fall I'm finally going to get after it.

So if you also heart EDM and fancy a party then jump on board. Reserve your cabin before it's too late and you're not one of the thousands of party people. Oh and you can save $50 per person [up to $250 per cabin] using my ZB50 discount code. You're welcome. See you in LA!

Video Vault >> She Wants Revenge [2007]

She Wants Revenge >> is one of the the latest artists to re-terrorize my most recent iPod gym mix refresh so the last few sessions getting fit-N-shit have been mondo-nostalgic. Their first 2 studio releases are absolutely superb and dusting off these albums got me thinking.

She Wants Revenge >> Marquee Theatre

The This Is Forever tour stop in Tempe back in 07 was the first and only time I've ever seen She Wants Revenge live in concert. This is unacceptable to me considering my addiction and them being one of my favorite bands. But then again, they've released only 1 album in the last 6 years. Are they still together? Yes. I checked. Online. Are they touring? No. Not until this summer and there aren't any US cities scheduled.

Thus, I theorize they've been in the studio cooking up something juicy to drop this summer before they announce their tour of the Americas. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and in the mean time have uploaded some long lost videos from that rad show for this Throwback Thursday.

Yeah, this footage is of inferior quality because it was produced from a Sony Cybershot without HD plus GoPro and Flip did not exist back then and my 1st gen iPhone did not have video capturing ability so just get off me and enjoy 2 of the best She Wants Revenge songs ever: Tear You Apart and Out Of Control. Now, This Is Forever, on the worldwide internet machine.
