zTALK >> Shiny Toy Guns

Shiny Toy Guns >> recently rolled through the desert again for a show in Tucson at The Rock. It had been about 4 years that the original STG formula disbanded before reuniting for this album and tour. So I took the opportunity to chatter with Jeremy Dawson and Carah Faye from the band and talk about their tour, the new album they just dropped and how they got the original band back together.

Shiny Toy Guns >> Jeremy and Carah

MARC: Jeremy, Carah, nice to see you again.

JEREMY: Marc! What's going on?

MARC: You’re probably wondering why I have you here today.

CARAH: We’re going to do an interview right?

MARC: I do have a few questions for you but first I want to take you to a Way Back Wednesday. [shows them this throwback pic and this throwback pic]

JEREMY: Wow, look at Carah. Is that '06?

CARAH: Wow, that was the old hair. That's like '07.

MARC: Don't worry, I’ll autograph it and send it to you.

CARAH: Do it.

MARC: How is the tour going so far?

CARAH: Good, we're really excited. Tonight should be interesting.

MARC: Yeah, you're starting the 2nd leg of tour tonight. How long has it been since your last show?

JEREMY: 3 weeks.

MARC: ..and you’re playing Tucson instead of Phoenix on this tour, I noticed the other stops are smaller towns well. Is that the intent?

JEREMY: Yeah, they’re called B-markets.

CARAH: From a radio perspective they’re B.

JEREMY: that’s right

MARC: It’s pretty awesome to have you return to form. What have you been doing since the We Are Pilots era?

CARAH: We did some shuffling around for a few years. It took a while for things to get to how they are today. You know, our hearts and our minds. When they finished Season Of Poison they came to terms with wanting things the way they were in that they had started writing - that was going to be for either something new or for Shiny Toy Guns. They came to me and were like ‘either you come back to Shiny Toy Guns or Shiny Toy Guns is going to take a break,' and at that point it had been enough time where this is going to be something I’m going to go full steam with, then when I heard the songs and I heard their hearts it made sense. I was in Sweden when they had begun writing after Season Of Poison, it took us a long time to put this album together because we wanted it to be right. It was important to us that if we were going to put things back together that we do it from the ground up.

MARC: Perfection takes time. I didn’t think anything could top We Are Pilots but III certainly rivals it at least.

CARAH: We’re definitely proud of it. It’s the summation of where we are and that’s what you need to be as artists. You can’t plan anything other than the present.

MARC: What about you Jeremy? You were doing some side projects too right?

JEREMY: Chad and I had all kinds of ideas. Shiny Toy Guns broke apart due to a number of things and doing Shiny Toy Guns without her is just not Shiny Toy Guns. So we had to fix all those things and mend all those things. Then we ate and then we rested.

MARC: Last time we spoke you guys were doing the We Are Pilots tour, that was like a 2 year tour.

CARAH: The end of a long run, that was after the 3rd version came out, we had been touring almost 5 years.

JEREMY: Yeah, heavily for 5 on.

MARC: That was in the midst of the MySpace era which served to help you and other bands similarly. What kind of innovations in technology or platforms has helped you to get to this point in 2013?

CARAH: Well, social media is still everything, it was MySpace for us and now it’s just a different platform and different name. It’s the same thing - interacting with your fans, the people who are buying the records and reacting to what you’re creating and everything you can do to be one with them.

JEREMY: Platforms change over and over again and as long as you’re doing something with some platform.

MARC: Which ones are most important to you?

CARAH: Right now Vine is everything for me personally. It’s a new thing where you make 9 seconds in a loop. It’s like the newspapers in the Harry Potter movies. That’s what it feels like. But I think for the band, Instagram and Facebook.

JEREMY: Twitter.

MARC: Have you seen the new MySpace?

CARAH: We have. We got to go to their headquarters and got the whole run through and I’m really interested to see how it plays out.

MARC: I like the layout. I always thought MySpace was the the best to go to for music. What do you think is the best today?

CARAH: For music yeah but maybe not for interaction. If you want to hear something, absolutely.

MARC: Are you experimenting with any new equipment, software and such?

JEREMY: I just recently started using only UAD for processing which is unbelievable.

CARAH: I’d say we aren’t super fresh because we finished the record and stepped away for a minute.

JEREMY: Whatever sounds cool we’ll use it. It’s what you do with it. You could take the worst plugin in the world. I love hearing a song and marveling on how good it sounds and finding out it was made with the thing that everyone says not to ever use. It’s because the guy using it has an idea in his a brain and manipulated that crappy thing to make something cool.

MARC: Speaking of manipulating things into something cool. The Le Disko remix album was titties, are you planning on doing a remix to III perhaps?

JEREMY: Maybe.

CARAH: Personally, I’d like to do a remix album and an acoustic.

JEREMY: Acoustic would be cool, we’ve never done it before.

CARAH: It’s something we all love and it’s also really big right now and it’s something that can be really fun - only the number ones though.

JEREMY: HAHAHA

CARAH: We’ve never had a number one.

MARC: I still want the album.

CARAH: You can have it!

YACHT >> Sets Sail For Phoenix

YACHT >> will be downtown playing at Comerica Theatre on Thursday APR-18 and it's the band's first time back to Phoenix since their show at Crescent Ballroom last June. This time around it's a different venue on a much bigger stage so it'll be interesting  to see what they have in store for a crowd 10 times the size of their last audience in the desert.

YACHT

Last summer here, they were wrapping up a mondo long Shangri-LA album tour and this time they are fresh off the latest cut in 'Second Summer'. This single is super rad and the video is animatedly rad as well [directed by ADHD].

When I spoke with them about the journey of YACHT, it was clear they were happy with the path and their growth. Fast forward a year later and there exists a band even more sophisticated. In its 10th year of existence, they are now working on a TV show called Support, which is themed around the intricacies of life on the road, often as the opening band.

YACHT is opening for Postal Service in Phoenix and Las Vegas but they certainly deserve the bigger stage and no doubt will command it next week. So definitely get out to the show next Thursday at Comerica. It is sure to be the blastest blast! Oh, and Postal Service is also on the bill too. Get after it!

Netsky >> LIVE! in the City [Regency Ballroom]

Saturday Night >> as I walk into the Regency Ballroom in San Francisco, Amtrak is in the middle of his DJ set. There is a guy in a red velvet bathrobe doing the Roger Rabbit. I'm like 'Bro, I already tried bringing that back like 3 years ago.' The girls wore their skimpiest, knee high fur boots, booty shorts, tube tops and the same glasses Dustin Hoffman wore in Tootsie. The energy was high. The crowd was positive. Everyone was on the dance floor except for one guy on the balcony in a fucking dress shirt; but at least he was here and a fan of Netsky is a friend of mine.

Netsky

The lights dim.

San Francisco was treated with a full accompaniment of musicians to play Netsky's refined and explosive brand of Drum and Bass. The guy even had a fucking hypeman for god's sake. How many Belgium DnB acts come with a hype man who emceed the room like it was still Electric Boogaloo? Commanding the room like Napoleon, we were putty in his hands. When he ordered us to shout 'yo' at the precise moment right before a massive drop, we did so without hesitating then succumbed to the river of bass that followed.

Having never seen it before, live DnB was extremely effective. This was especially true when we were treated to the live addition of Billie's luscious voice as she sang over 'When Darkness Falls'. Billie is a long-legged, blonde, beautiful white woman who has pipes like the chick from C+C Music Factory.

Netsky stood in the center of the stage, surrounded by electronics.  He conducted his drummer, keyboardist, and hypeman like an orchestra. The shit was a motherfucking headbanger - and that is the most eloquent way I can describe the fullness, beauty and power of his compositions.

Sonos Wireless Music Player

From the soulful intro to 'Love Has Gone' to when the hype man asked us all to raise our lighters in the air during a buildup [yes I did it and it was cool so STFU]. The set had many high points and well exceeded my expectations.  By the time 'Give and Take' was over I was drenched in sweat, feet throbbing with a grin a mile wide and having an incredible time. If there was a level in Mega Man where you go to a dope club and have a really great time dancing with strangers, 'Give and Take' would be the background music.

And the drops.

My lord the drops were so grimy. I love Dubstep as much as this fucking guy next to me doing 2001 raver jazz hands while wearing white gloves with colored lights on the finger tips probably does - but it was exciting to hear filthy spine shattering drops AND actual musical notes being played at the same time. At each drop, the floor would undulate and the crowd would lift into the air in unison like one giant organism losing control over its body. Where Dubstep drops feel more like I am being slowly destroyed and smothered into the ground in an amazing way, Netsky's DnB-Liquid drops felt uplifting and restorative.

See him live. Buy his new album 2. Remix his shit - and find yourself a reliable hype man to journey the ups and downs of life with you.

Phoenix >> Bankrupt! Coachella Warmup in Tempe [Marquee Theatre]

Phoenix >> in Tempe. Yes that was a thing. It doesn't quite sound right but it was 'Fuckin A Right'. Phoenix the band played a show in Tempe the city. They shredded it in fact and their return to Marquee Theatre Monday night was damn righteous.

Phoenix >> Marquee Theatre

In a sense this performance was a practice round for Coachella, which they are headlining on Saturday of both weekends. Thereafter they're poised to au revoir about the country [they're Parisian, see what I did there] on their Bankrupt! album tour.

The new album is slated to drop on 4.23 and they've done a good job containing it outside of 'Entertainment' which is its first single released along with an official video. That said, a healthy chunk of the show was off this album so mostly foreign [oi oi, get it?] and now I'm even more excited to go Bankrupt! this month.

The new stuff is really superb and it sounds like they just totally let loose on this one. A handful of the songs contained some next level shit as the vocals peaced and both guitars fight over caveman drums and acidic keyboards. They did start and close out with a bunch of the beloved classics, many from perhaps their best LP Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. My favorites and probably yours too were 'Lasso', 'Lisztomania', '1901', 'Fences' and 'Girlfriend'.

That was a badass show and I'm mega pumped for what they can do with a major stage and in Indio this weekend with no specified end time.

On a side note, it looks like Marquee Theatre was hit with our desert plaque of wind and mud. Much of the patio was fenced off and the merch table area in front of the main bar was in full demolition mode. They are opening up the amphitheatre to beyond the sound booth and back to the Sierra Nevada. It also appears as if they are building onto a 2nd deck as well. I noticed the ticket office is 4 windows now too so lots of positives have already gone underway at the Theatre. Thanks Lucky Man!

Poliça >> Saturday in San Francisco

Poliça >> will be hitting nearly all points of California this week including special performances at Coachella on Friday of both weekends. But if you are 1 of the many unfortunate not able to attend the festival in Indio then hit up their show in San Francisco at Mezzanine this Saturday night.

Poliça

It's a beautiful thing when superb synths meet soulful vocals and that's what Poliça brings in its artistry. Their debut album Give You The Ghost is really a gem and a prime example of how this sub-sound has evolved in recent years. According to Rolling Stone following the album's release, Poliça is the best band  Justin Vernon has ever heard and that's saying a lot coming from a such a powerful band in Bon Iver.

They've released videos for 'Amongster' and 'Lay Your Cards Out' which are certainly 2 of the album's strongest tracks but I really like 'Wandering Star' the best. They remind me of a young Yeah Yeah Yeahs mixed with Blonde Redhead and Poliça is just getting started. SXSW and ACL appearances helped spread the Poliça buzz last year and this year is already proving to be bigger whilst on their current tour and on the Coachella lineup.

So get out to the Mezzanine this weekend and check out Poliça. This is one of my favorite spots in the city and you can't go wrong getting out this awesome band.

Pat’s Run 2013 >> Run Walk Honor

Pat Tillman [1976-2004] >> is probably one of the utmost G products of Arizona State University and on 4.20 he will be honored at the 9th annual Pat's Run which starts and finishes outside of Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe.

Pat Tillman

Straight out of NOR*CAL, Tillman was a PAC-10 Defensive Player of the Year playing LB at ASU and he graduated with honors from its prestigious business school. Subsequently, he played a few solid years in the NFL for the Arizona Cardinals before turning down a $3.6M contract to enlist in the Army and serve following 9-11.

Organized by the Pat Tillman Foundation, this 4.2 mile run is the non-profit's main source of funding to support veterans, active service members and their families as well as provide scholarships for this growing population, among other deeds of aid. Every year the run gets bigger and this year there is expected to be more than 30,000 participants of all sorts, all ages, running, jogging, walking, in shorts & sneaks or fatigues & boots. Even dogs do run run, they do run run.

It's really a cool way to contribute to a charity, get your sweat on and have some fun with a grip of other people on an always-beautiful April morning in the desert. Members of zBORED will also be running for the thrill of it, thrill of it so register under Team zBORED and run with us. See you at the finish line or at the bars after!
