Tanlines >> First Experience x 2 in Phoenix [Valley Bar]

Valley Bar >> is pretty awesome as far as I can tell. Reasonably priced creative signature drinks, board games and darts that only require an ID trade off...? I'm in.

Tanlines >> Valley Bar

As a side note: they have done some cool things with the ceilings in the place.

Due to the ownership, it's expected to be similar to the Little Woody, Crescent Ballroom, etc. But my best description is that Valley Bar is a speakeasy, show-ready with enough room to house your closest [250+] friends. I hope my favorite bands don't get big so I can see them here.

Mas Ysa opened for Tanlines tonight. The fact that a solo man, in what looked like cutoff JNCO's and bare feet, was creating so much sound was pretty impressive. He sounded as expected per Spotify. His stage presence was great - he owned the stage, joked about singing until the next guy claimed his karaoke spot and killed it in between.

Post Mas Ysa break, Tanlines took the stage. It was apparently their first time playing Phoenix [as we found out after the show] and they didn't have a ton of confidence in us as a crowd from what they had heard. Luckily I think we exceeded their expectations.

And they deserved it. They spent most of their time playing, with some banter between songs that kept it personal. I was standing behind the speakers and was still impressed by the consistency of their sound. My biggest observation was that the crowd was having fun - true I-spilled-my-whole-drink-stop-the-show sort of fun. The kind of fun you have when you dance around to Tanlines in your bedroom with the door closed.

We got the chance to take a quick picture with the guys after the show and they were super friendly which is always a pleasant surprise. It seemed that they are still getting used to a sold out show, regardless of the venue size. But good for them - they played an outstanding show and stuck around to meet the crowd afterward [which is huge if you ask me!].

311 >> Beautiful Disaster in Scottsdale [Talking Stick]

311 >> returned to the desert last night for a poolside show in Scottsdale at the Talking Stick resort. It was a 25th birthday celebration of the Omaha Stylistics' existence as a band and a prelude to the birthday celebration for this glorious nation. You know, Independence Weekend.

311 >> Scottsdale

Fourth of July. Lucy in the Sky.

I remember pine trees and the coat of many colors.

It has been merely a year since Nick Hex and the funky quintet rocked the valley at this same venue in this exact sweltering heat but this show was one of my favorites out of the 20-something times. I've preached this several times before but hear this again. Every 311 show is unique its own way and all offer a kind of magic that makes that concert unbelievably special.

For me it was that ode to Independence Day - although my aforementioned excerpt of 'Homebrew' did not make the set list. Checking into the resort that day there was a collective high energy and readiness for a long holiday weekend and anticipation of a great show like all fellow 311 fans know about.

311 brings a lot of energy when they play year over year and 110 degrees on the outside stage still was no deterrent. I mean Nick Hex was sartorially saying 'bring it' whilst wearing jeans and fucking track jacket when he walked onstage to open the night with 'Beautiful Disaster'. The only thing more impressive than that was seeing MC Hammer perform onstage outside at Fort McDowell in the summer 2010 rocking a full on tux pushing 50 years old yet Hammer-dancing the whole fucking time from stage left to right the entire time.

A lot of the show was fairly standard. Nick Hex serenaded with and without his guitar rhythm while SA's pitch-shifty flow migrated about every part of the stage. Chad splashed the drum kit incredibly, Tim - who is looking more and more like Steve Buschemi every time I see him - got funky on the strings and of course, P-Nut beat that thang.

Aside from adding to the ever growing repertoire with tracks like 'Showdown' and 'The Great Divide' from the latest album Stereolithic, there were a few other pleasant surprises and notables I enjoyed. SA Martinez may be getting visibly older but I was happy to see how much energy he still has. His hype-man points skyrocketed with plenty of alien-robotic movements and it was by far the most active I've seen him on the turntables in almost 20 years, especially on 'Large In The Margin' and 'All Mixed Up' which were much trippier than usual.

The heat and the warm Fireball turned me into a 'Beautiful Disaster' last night and am currently experiencing the meanest bastard of a hangover there is but I would not exchange the All Doped Up experience for anything. Can't wait for the next one.

Setlist: Beautiful Disaster * From Chaos * Prisoner * Don't Stay Home * The Great Divide * 8:16AM * T&P Combo * Freeze Time * Hive * Lovesong * Applied Science * Who's Got The Herb? * You Wouldn't Believe * All Mixed Up * Beyond The Gray Sky * Transistor * Existential Hero * Jackpot * Creatures [For A While] * ENCORE: Down * Down

Texas Hippie Coalition >> Photos from THC’s show in Atlanta [Masquerade]

Texas Hippie Coalition >> is no nonsense, good rock and roll. Everything's bigger in Texas including frontman Big Daddy and the band's charisma that everyone gets to experience at a live THC show. Their show at the Masquerade in Atlanta was a unique THC party full of raising hell, storytelling and, of course, some big rock and roll sound for Georgia from good ol' Texas.

311 will return to Scottsdale during 4th of July weekend for their 25th anniversary

311 >> recently turned 25 years old and to kick off the weekend America celebrates our own birthday the band is returning to Scottsdale to play poolside again at the Talking Stick Resort on Thursday, JUL-2.

311 >> Stereolythic

It was such a stellar experience when the 'Omaha Stylee' quintet played poolside last summer during their fan favorite Unity tour circuit in support of the release of their latest album Stereolithic. It was typically hot as hell for that show in late June last year and the outdoor desert conditions are just as brutal for performers as they are for the packed crowds assembled to see 311, so mad propers go out to Nick Hexum and the crew for braving the elements again to give us all of us super fans more of what we won't ever get enough of. I can't wait to do it all over again.

[Related: 311 >> Down in Scottsdale]

For those of you who somehow don't know 311 and what they're all about, let us get to know them ahead of the highly anticipated summer jam session by the pool.

311 was formed in 1990 in Omaha, Nebraska by singer/guitarist Nick Hexum, singer S.A. Martinez, guitarist Tim Mahoney, drummer Chad Sexton and bassist P-Nut. The band now resides in Los Angeles, California.

311 mix rock, reggae, hip-hop and funk into their own unique sound. After years of consistent touring, 311 have developed a reputation as one of the most influential and most entertaining live bands in the U.S.

311 have released eleven studio albums, one live album, one greatest hits album and three DVD's - and have sold over 9 million albums in the U.S. Nine of their albums have reached the Top 10 on Billboard's Top 200 Sales Chart...and nine of their singles have reached the Top 10 on Billboard's Alternative Rock Radio Chart [including the #1 singles 'Down', 'Love Song' & 'Don't Tread On Me'; along with 'Amber', 'All Mixed Up', 'Come Original', 'Creatures For Awhile', 'Hey You' and 'Sunset in July'].

311 recorded their 11th studio album, Stereolithic, for a March 11, 2014 release, which debuted at #6 on the Top 200 Album Chart.

The band's celebratory live shows & incessant touring schedule have earned them a massive Grassroots following nationwide. Since its inception in 2004, 311’s annual summer headlining amphitheatre run, Unity Tour, has become one of the largest modern rock concerts of the summer. Support acts on previous Unity Tours have included Sublime with Rome, Cypress Hill, The Offspring, Slightly Stoopid, Snoop Dogg, The Roots, Papa Roach, The Wailers, O.A.R., Matisyahu and Ziggy Marley.
